Experiencing the
Monarch Migration
GGC member Karen Rice will talk about
firsthand experience (along with Pam Braak,
Greg Braak and Chuck Voelker) of one of the
most amazing phenomena in nature – the
migration of millions of Monarch butterflies
southward from their breeding grounds in
the United States and Canada to
overwintering sites in the mountains of
south central Mexico. Follow our intrepid
human travelers from DFW up the
mountains of Michoacán Mexico, and follow
the path of the migrating monarchs over
thousands of miles across unforgiving
environments.

President’s Message
Happy New Year! I hope that your holidays were filled with happy memories of family and friends. It may be January and cold, but the GGC activities continue into the new year preparing for our annual plant sale, ordering caladium bulbs and volunteering for community service projects. Please sign up for upcoming activities at our general meeting or use the on line sign-up.
You’ll notice our calendar reflects some of the workshops we are promoting to members that include long time GGC member Toni Moorehead, presenting a class at the REC on January 17th “Designing Your Home Landscape.” In recognition of Bird Sanctuary Week, on January 26th, GGC is sponsoring a presentation by the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center “Night Flight Owls’ Nocturnal Habits” at the Grapevine Library.
I hope to see all of you at our next General Meeting on January 22nd.

Please note: The January 18th workday at the Perennial Gardens has been canceled.
GGC Member Forum: April 2019 Program Purpose: To enable GGC members to share ideas on five focus topics Five topics will be posted on color-coded signs positioned on tables clustered through-out the room. Topics: ~ Augmenting bird feeders ~ Shade gardening ~ Travel destinations for gardens and/or wildlife ~ Improving soils for successful gardening ~ Summer gardening in Texas heat Participants will choose three of the five topics. At the beginning of each 15-minute sharing session, previous lists of ideas will be reviewed and new ideas will be added to the lists. Five GGC members will be moderators for each focus topic. Please note: The moderator need not be prepared to do a “presentation” on the topic—just keep ideas flowing. This member will not circulate among the five topics, but will remain with the topic to help clarify ideas for the scribe. Each group will have a scribe who will use a marker and chart paper to record the ideas from the group. Chart paper from each focus topic will be collected at the end of the meeting and will be summarized for the next GGC Newsletter. NEEDED: Volunteers to be either a moderator or scribe. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Dinah Chancellor, Program Chair.

Plant sale: Plant sale volunteers met & will have exciting news to share at
our January meeting. Sign up sheets will be at our next couple of meetings
to sign up for all areas of need for the April 13th plant sale. We will also be
collecting plastic gallon pots so bring those cleaned to the meetings.
Thank you. Cecilia Mitchell
Vintage Pots: The 2019 plant sale is coming up in April and this may seem
like a long way away, but it will be with us sooner than we think. We will be having a “Vintage Pot” section this year, and we are looking to the members to help us with this. Collect pots you believe to be “vintage” and then please clean them thoroughly and bring them to the meetings. There will be a table on the left at the main entrance of the convention center where you can leave them. If you have a lot of pots, yippee… contact me and we can arrange
pick-up. Thank you. Catriona and Elizabeth
West Texas Street Work Day
February 12, 2019 - 10 AM
It is time to do some pruning on West Texas
Street. I can’t think of a better way to
celebrate Valentine’s Day than to spend time with friends visiting and working in the
garden. Have you got some colorful mucking around boots? Great, let’s all dig ‘em
out and see if we can brighten up the day. Who knows, it may be cloudy, like it is
today, as I write this note to you today. Doesn’t that sound liked fun? Let’s do it and
then we can head over to Jakes to eat and drink coffee and swap stories. Hey you
newbies out there – come join in on the fun – think you don’t know anything about
gardening? Great, come join in and we can learn together. Trust me – I’m still pretty
good at killing plants along with the rest of ‘em, but I’m never too old to learn.
Wear your boots, bring your pruning shears and weeders and let’s get together and
dig in the dirt. I know there will be some cleaning up to do because it has been a
while since we planted those pansies. Be sure to dress for the weather; it may be
freezing or hot – we never know. Come see us at the signup table at the January
22nd meeting or signup on line in the Members Section on our Website.
If you have any questions about this project, give me a call, I’m in the book.
Suzi Guckel, Chairman
West Texas Street Project

Ways and Means:
Chuck Voelker is offering a knife and garden tool sharpening service. All you have to do is bring them to the Ways & Means table at the next meeting. His fee is quite reasonable and is donated to the garden club. His work is excellent.
We‘ll have new Field Guides for sale at our January meeting – Raptors and general
Wildlife. The Owls Field Guide is also back in stock, joining the Birds, Fish, and Trees
and other handy and useful guides. Alexandra Evans

Color Your World Plant Sale
We need volunteers! If you are not already signed up on one of our many committees, please sign up at our next meeting or by contacting Cecilia Mitchell or Annemarie Garlin, plant sale co-chairs.
Please review the list of colorful plants below and, if you have any EXTRA in your yard…. WE WANT THEM FOR THE SALE! Please plan to dig them up, pot them in 1 gallon plastic containers and let Paula Wilson know now which plants you plan to coddle and then donate to our plant sale on April 13th. We will have soil and pots
available for you at the Botanical Garden – please watch for dates and times. Please pot the plants at least six weeks ahead to give them plenty of time to develop a good root system before we sell them. (Don’t forget to line the bottom of the pot with newspaper to keep the soil in place.)
If you have some of the plants on this list, but for one reason or another you cannot dig them, please contact either Joyce Quam or Gregg Braak.
