One aspect of the Christmas season is the giving of gifts. When we give another a gift, it is a symbol of the love we have for them and we really hope that they love and use it. I wonder how many of this year’s Christmas gifts have either been returned, or put on a shelf someplace? There is a famous children’s story called The Velveteen Rabbit . In it, a little girl is given a stuffed rabbit as a toy. She loved that toy so much that over the years pieces and parts of the toy fell off. “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the fullest.” God has given us the gift of life because He loves us. Do we really use the gift of life or are we just passively passing the time? Do we take chances or risks? There are prices to pay for living life to the fullest. A few weeks ago I saw one of our middle school students in a cast. I asked how he did that and he said, “Snowboarding.” Another seventh grader had a fat lip. I asked her how that happened and she said “Indoor soccer.” Sometimes living life leaves a mark. Five years ago, when my back started really giving me pain, the diagnosis was degenerative disc disease caused by arthritis. I asked the doctor if my years of backpacking had added to the problem. He paused and said, “Perhaps. It may have advanced it a couple of years but would you have given up any of those experiences?” I said “No”. Living life to the fullest can leave a lasting memory. Perhaps that is the key to the bad backs, weak knees and broken wrists. Make them occasions of triggering a memory. If I remember climbing Twin Sisters Mountain, or crossing the ice field on Hallets peak or watching the sunset on Mt. LeConte, it might make the pain more bearable. I shared some of these thoughts last week at a funeral of a 94 year old man who really lived life completely. After mass Tim Smith and I were chatting. I said that when I died I want to run and slide into heaven. Tim said, “A headfirst slide into home.” I like that, a headfirst slide into home. Peace Fr. Delonnay Congratulations Fr. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

The Scout Oath

On my honor I will do my best to do my

duty to God and my country and to obey the

Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to

keep myself physically strong, mentally awake,

and morally straight.

The Scout Law

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful,

friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful,

thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

AHG Oath

I promise to love God, cherish my family,

honor my country, and serve in my community.

AHG Creed

As an American Heritage Girl, I promise to

be:

Compassionate, Helpful, Honest, Loyal,

Perseverant, Pure, Resourceful, Respectful,

Responsible, and Reverent.

From the book of Tobit (12:6-7)

Raphael called the two men aside privately and said to them: "Thank God! Give him the praise and the glory. Before all living, acknowledge the many good things he has done for you, by blessing and extolling his name in song. Before all people honor and proclaim God's deeds, and do not slack in praising him. A king's secret it is prudent to keep, but the works of the God are to be declared and made known. Praise them with due honor. Do good, and evil will not find its way to you."

All-powerful and ever-living God, when Tobit set out on his journey, you sent your angel Raphael to guide and protect him. Protect us, who also are your servants: walk by our side to help us; be our companion and our strength on the road, and our refuge in every adversity. Lead us, O Lord, so that we will reach our destination in safety and happily return to our homes. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ACROSS THE PARKING LOT

50 students, teachers, and parent chaperones, attended the 43rd Annual March for Life in Washington D.C. This is the largest Pro-Life event in our country. I am so proud to be at a Catholic High School that values and upholds the gift of life.

At our weekly school Mass, we received a blessing from Fr. Brian for our journey to speak up for the unborn. Our pilgrimage began on Thursday, January 26th when all of us loaded on the Right to Life Bus at 8:00 p.m. We traveled through the night and arrived at 7:00 a.m. to begin our mission of protecting the rights of all who are helpless.

Our first stop was DAR Constitution Hall. Tony Melendez began with prayer and music. He is a famous guitarist who has no arms and plays the guitar with his toes. He is a Thalidomide baby because his mother was prescribed this drug to calm morning sickness during her pregnancy. His mother chose to continue her pregnancy and he is an amazing man. He sang his song in 1987, “Never Be the Same”, for Pope John Paul II and the Pope approached the stage and kissed him in appreciation. It launched his career and he has performed in 44 countries.

Pam Tebow, mother of Christian athlete Tim Tebow, gave a powerful speech on how she and her husband were missionaries in the Philippines when she had problems with her pregnancy that threatened her and her unborn son, Tim. She chose life and not only was Tim healthy but was awarded the Heisman Trophy in college, this is given to the top football player in the country. Pam is a Pro-Life warrior and speaks all over the country against abortion.

Ryan Bomberger was another featured speaker and

musician. His mother was raped and she chose to

continue the pregnancy. He was adopted as a baby and

grew up in a loving Christian family of 15. Ten of the

thirteen children were adopted in this remarkable family.

He is an Emmy Award winning professional who founded

The Radiance Foundation.

The Lakers then walked to the Rally, located near the

Washington Monument. Then it was maneuvering through

long security lines. The featured speaker was Vice

President, Mike Pence and his wife. He is a former

Catholic and longtime supporter of the anti-abortion

movement. His powerful message was “Life is Winning

Again in America”.

Our students stood in the cold for the Rally and then

marched the streets of the Capitol ending at the Supreme

Court. Then it was off to Holy Spirit Parish that hosted us.

All of us slept on the floor after our day sleeping on the bus.

It is not a luxurious trip.

The next day we toured Arlington National Cemetery,

Air and Space Museum, Pope (St.) John Paul II Museum

and ended with Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine.

Our Lakers were a voice for the unborn. We are

hoping that there will not have to be a 44th Annual March

because the 1973 Supreme Court decision will be reversed

by next year.

DECEMBER UPDATE

Our Lady of the lakes St. Vincent de Paul made deposits of $6,368.26 and wrote checks totaling $7,800.44. We made 4 home visits, had 7 meetings at the Parish Center, answered over 100 phone calls and made 36 referrals. Last month we were able to help some families with Christmas. Thank you to all our parishioners for their continued generosity. We are able to help because you give.

REST IN PEACE

Remember those who have gone before us

Vincent Barnauskas Sue Kerton

“Happy are those who have died in the Lord;

Let them rest from their labors For their good deeds go with them.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with their families. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

DIVINE MERCY

St. Faustina was led by an angel to the chasms of hell. The kind of tortures I saw: the first torture that constitutes hell is the loss of God; the second is perpetual remorse of conscience; the third is that one's condition will never change; the fourth is the fire that will penetrate the soul without destroying it....a terrible suffering,

since it is purely spiritual fire, lit by God's anger; the fifth torture is continual darkness and a terrible suffocating smell; the constant company of Satan; the seventh torture is horrible despair, hatred of God, vile words, curses and blasphemies. (Diary 741..to be continued)

There will be a gathering of the Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy on Tuesday, February 7th in the chapel beginning at 7:00pm. All are welcome to join us.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Scripture passages from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, Psalm 112, and St. Matthew’s Gospel describe those who generously share their blessings with the needy, show justice, and follow the Lord’s directives as a “light” to others. As faithful stewards seeking personal relationships with Jesus and striving for lives of virtue, we, too, may become the salt of the Earth and the light of the world. By glorifying and praising God through our example of holiness and our generous sacrifice of time, talent, and treasure, we become witnesses to others who aspire to follow Christ. Consider serving the needy by volunteering time at a local soup kitchen, giving to your local or parish food bank, or distributing food and clothing directly to those homeless brothers and sisters among us.

RIGHT TO LIFE-LIFESPAN

ABORTION NUMBERS DROPPING

For the first time since 1974, the number of abortions performed yearly in the United States has dropped below one million–926,190 for 2014. Even better news, longer term, is that abortion rates and ratios, which measure the general frequency of abortion and the likelihood that a pregnant woman will abort, are down to levels below what they were in 1973, when Roe v. Wade first made abortion on demand the law of the land. These numbers were reported by the Alan Guttmacher Institute (no friend of the pro-life movement). Unfortunately, Michigan showed an increase in the number of abortions so our work is far from over. For more information, please call the LIFESPAN office, 248-816-1546.
