THREE LEADING BRANDS – ONE TOTAL HVAC SOLUTION

Carrier supplies bespoke chillers for Elizabeth Line

Carrier is supplying bespoke high-perfor-mance, high-efficiency chillers for London’s Elizabeth Line project to meet its cooling needs and the stringent fire safety materials standards required for use underground.

Fifteen customised AquaSnap® air-cooled liquid chillers with Greenspeed Intelligence® will provide resilient, reliable cooling for new Elizabeth Line stations at Tottenham Court Road, Paddington, Woolwich and Farringdon.

Strict requirementsCarrier’s UK team worked closely with our chiller research and development centre in Montluel, France, to develop a solution that met the strict fire prevention requirements for the project, due to its underground location.

The bespoke chillers are equipped with zero halogen, low-smoke insulation and cables, and finished with specialist paint, all formulated to emit very low smoke and/or fumes when exposed to heat or flame.

The changes to the standard factory specifi-

cation required detailed research on alterna-tive components and their application. For example, the requirement for zero halogen, low-smoke cables required a completely new chiller wiring loom.

Matthew Maleki, Carrier product manager who headed the compliance project, said: “The specification was challenging and there were no standard factory-produced chill-ers available that were compliant. Carrier’s technology specialists were very innovative, and we worked closely with them to develop a custom-made chiller that met all of the re-quirements, and provides efficient and reliable cooling with proven Carrier technology.”

Carrier’s AquaSnap 30RB chiller is based on highly-reliable rotary scroll compressors running on refrigerant R-410A, a quiet-running AeroAcoustic™ fan system, and high-efficiency microchannel condenser coil technology.

Specialist Toshiba VRF will cool London’s CrossrailToshiba has developed a specialist VRF air conditioning system for the Crossrail project, to provide high resilience cooling for its new underground facilities.

The system was developed by a project team made up of representatives from Toshiba and Crossrail engineering staff, which provided the solution for contractor Laing O’Rourke. The system will be used to provide a high quality temperature-controlled environment in ticket halls, station control centres and equipment rooms.

Key design challenges were meeting London Underground’s strict fire safety requirements, and integrating refrigerant leak detection and management systems to ensure the safety of workers and the public.

Also important was the ability to deliver fine

control of temperatures to ensure a stable environment for people and equipment, with low power draw on equipment start-up.

After analysing the required specification, and identifying variances with existing stan-dard air conditioning systems, the partners developed and tested a bespoke system to meet the precise requirements.

Constant monitoringThe system is equipped with Toshiba’s new integrated LD2 refrigerant leak detection and management technology, which constantly monitors refrigerant charge in relation to performance. In the unlikely event of a leak, it sends an alarm signal and automatically isolates the site of the leak, preventing further loss.

Toshiba is the first air conditioning company in the UK to introduce a new water-based condenser coil protection option that improves air conditioning efficiency and ex-tends equipment life, while help-ing to protect the environment.

Standard condenser treat-ments contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are solvents known to be harmful to the environment and hazardous to human health.

The new water-based coat-ing, made by Bronz-Glow, does not contains VOCs yet is highly effective in protecting copper and aluminium used in coils from corrosion.

Total coverageIt is available on condensers across the company’s range, covering VRF, multi-split systems and indi-vidual split units.

Toshiba recommends its use where equipment is located in coastal regions and industrial and urban areas subject to high levels of nitrogen oxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur. High con-centrations of these compounds can exist within three miles of the coast and high intensity urban and industrial areas.

The coating contains a stainless steel-based pigment that forms a barrier between the surrounding air and the metal of the condenser coil. In the event of a breach, the coating can be repaired on-site to maintain protection.

Toshiba’s R32 roadshow updates customers across the UK and Ireland on roll-out plans

Air conditioning installers can now access high quality technical training online using a new portal developed by Toshiba.

It enables customers to learn at their own pace, in order to qualify for Toshiba’s industry-leading seven year warranty. Users have their own training account which records courses completed.

Access the training portal here: https://training.toshibaac.co.uk

Toshiba held a series of highly successful customer events across the UK and Ireland to launch our move to R32 refrigerant for split and multi-split systems.

Coinciding with the start of the World Cup, the Toshiba R32 Roadshow had a football theme, with events staged at iconic football grounds, including Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in London, Villa Park, Aston Villa’s ground in Birmingham, Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, Ashton Gate, home of Bristol City, and Croke Park in Dublin, home of the Gaelic Athletic Association.

Key messagesToshiba distributor Cool Designs Limited also held two events, in Glasgow and Newcastle, where the roadshow culminated, supported by the Toshiba team to ensure continuity of key messages.

David Dunn said: “Having looked in detail

at the current options, we believe R32 is the best alternative as the industry makes the transition away from high Global Warming Potential (GWP) R410A refrigerant. R32 is less expensive and better for the environ-ment, but its A2L classification means that, although non-toxic, it is mildly flammable.”

He added: “Our priority is to ensure the highest standards of safety for all Toshiba installa-tions, and to this end we will be supporting customers with a contribution towards training through the rewards portal in readiness for the new flamma-bles hands-on-training course to ensure a successful transition, and that it is achieved as safely and cost-effectively as possible.”

Toshiba’s Super Digital Inverter (SDi)

and Digital Inverter (Di) are being offered pre-charged with R32 now, giving custom-ers access to this high-performance, lower GWP option. R410A-based equipment will continue to be sold until existing stock runs

out in the Autumn.

World Cup promoContinuing the roadshow’s football theme, the company used the events to announce a special World Cup incentive scheme, offering customers double Toshiba Reward points on orders placed and invoiced from the start of the World Cup for as long as England remain in

the competition. To qualify, customers must be registered

on the Toshiba Rewards website. Follow this link to register: www.toshibarewards.co.uk

Epure Dynamics delivers pristine air quality for high performance buildings

CIAT’s Epure Dynamics® is a new indoor air quality (IAQ) system designed to deliver exceptional comfort conditions with an assured level of air purity for building oc-cupants.

It uses a network of calibrated air quality sensors connected to a Smart CIATControl system to continuously measure the concen-tration of particulates in the air. If the con-

centration in a space exceeds a pre-set level, the system activates the unit’s purification mode, switching on the Epure filtration sys-tem, which has a filtering surface 11 times greater than that of conventional filters.

PurificationIn purification mode, the unit continuously recycles and filters the air until air quality achieves the desired level. The cleaning process normally takes from a few minutes to half-an-hour, depending on the volume of the space and level of contaminants.

Paul Smith, CIAT UK sales manager, said: “The focus on improving IAQ is growing in the UK. CIAT’s Epure Dynamics system can help address this need, and assure end-users of a high-quality and productive indoor environment.”
