Mariann and I drove out of Anderson Monday afternoon, August 3, with the knowledge that God has blessed us with a new family. Our love for the Madison Park congregation and the surrounding community grew greater with each new face we were so blessed to meet over our weekend visit. In all honesty, the hundreds and hundreds of new names and faces are a bit of a blur. You will probably need to remind us several times. But what shines through the haze of my mind are the smiles, the prayers, the whispered words of love and encouragement, even the watery eyes as we all realized that somehow God miraculously brought us together in a next step of His master plan for our lives and His mission. Your love for our Abba, Father, was evident in your embrace of us. We recognize that the presence of Christ is strong in you and we are anxious to join together to discern how He wants to spread that presence throughout our community. God has blessed you in so many wonderful ways. I can’t wait to discover how He intends to continue to bless others through you. As I return to Columbus today to begin the final preparations for our transition, I think of your faces, your hearts and your passion for our Lord. I think of the faces here in our current family of faith and the extraordinary love which calls them forward into God’s future. I think of God’s people all over the world who live and serve and sacrifice to share the message of reconciliation to God through Jesus Christ. Every summer a few thousand people, representing 20-30 congregations (and many from no congregation), black/white/hispanic, have done just that: get together to eat, enjoy music from our various traditions, and take another step in fulfilling Christ’s prayer. from God and not from us.”Treasure in jars of clay… Doesn’t it amaze you that God chooses to transport His treasure of salvation to the world through us? It is an extraordinary thing to be used by God! I am astounded to think that God would intentionally choose to use us as delivery vehicles for His Good News. We seem so weak, so fragile – like pottery which must be carefully handled to keep it from falling to the floor and shattering.Perhaps, as I shared with you last weekend, our fragility is the very reason God uses us as His carriers. If we were truly self-sufficient, as we so often desire to be, we wouldn’t need Him. If we were strong enough to handle everything on our own, we might never cry out for help from our merciful God. Our weakness becomes the catalyst for His strength precisely because it forces us to recognize our need for Him.But I believe there is another reason God

has selected our imperfect pottery to house His hope for humanity. The vessels must be broken to release the power within. God’s desire is not to simply fill us with Himself for our own sake, but to pour Himself out through us. We must be broken so that the love of Christ may be spilled into the world. As we prepare for our future together, let’s enter into a season of prayer and preparation. I think a good focus of our contemplation might be; “Where is the brokenness? Where is my heart fractured enough to let the love of God pour out of me and into the world?” Let’s take time over the next few weeks to reflect on the tender spots in our spirits. Are you touched deeply within when you see a hungry or hurting child, a hopeless father, a bitter teen, a homeless family? Does the plight of someone caught in the destructive cycle of addiction bring you to your knees or does the arrogant posturing of an agnostic prompt pain rather than rebuttal? Do you grieve for the girl caught in sexual slavery or the foster child with no home of their own? Are you so

desperately anxious for people to know the saving love of Jesus that it causes you to weep for them?May God break our hearts for the people who break His. May we be filled with the love and compassion of the one of whom scripture promised, “He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle.” (Is. 42:3) May we be broken so God may be poured out. Please know that Mariann and I are praying for you and that we feel your prayers for us. You have moved us deeply and we know that God is up to something special. Thank you for the privilege of sharing your journey. You are already in our hearts and we will soon be together in His service. And always remember…You are loved!

Madison Park Church will join in the Sesquicentennial Celebration for the City of Anderson on Wednesday, August 26 at 6:00 at Jackson Park. It will be an evening of picnic and praise, presented by various churches and organizations from the city, including MPC.

It has been 150 years since Anderson became a city and prior to that many settlements had been on the site, beginning about 1798 when Chief Anderson settled on the banks of the White River. Anderson has evolved from a Native American village becoming a center for commerce with the auto industry and now stands on the brink of rebirth toward the future.

The Sesquicentennial Committee extents this invitation, “For generations, Anderson has been called home. As we approach the 150th anniversary of our city’s founding, we are proud to be recognized for the resilience and growth we have accomplished as a community. There is an amazing spirit that abounds in Anderson. That spirit took root in 1865 and grows stronger each year. We hope that you will become a part of Anderson’s history and join us in celebrating 150 years of success, resilience, culture and history.Much has transpired in the 150 years since Anderson became a city. And now it’s time to look back on local history - and celebrate!”

For more information and week-long celebration schedule go to facebook.com/anderson150.
