So, Chuck is a watch dog, Maybelline is a chicken and Bella thinks she’s a therapist. (Bella can fill you in.) I may need to talk to Bella after the time changes this month. I’m not a big fan of Daylight Savings Time,

especially in the fall when we lose an hour of (daylight) riding time in the evenings. I know, we are actually back on our “real” time, but why not just leave it alone? At least that way I’m used to it. And that’s my rant for the day.

On a more positive note, November brings Thanksgiving and family time through the beginning of the upcoming holiday season. I hope you all have plans to spend this year with the ones that mean the most to you. If you can’t be with them in person, at least make a phone call or spend some time with a video call. (I love Skype!)

Things are still busy here with plenty of horses to keep us hopping all through the fall and winter months. All of the foals are weaned and it’s almost time to start handling the yearlings a little more. There are many things to be thankful for, even though I am not looking foward to the colder weather and shorter days, they still bring lots of blessings with them.

Until next month.....spend some time with family......and remember to count your blessings on horseback!God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Dry SpotsShortyHorse11Location: IllinoisI just got this mare on Friday and I rode her for the first time last night. We did a pretty good workout and she is really out of shape so she was sweating pretty good. My saddle seemed to fit her really well, no gap in the back and not rubbing on her withers. When I got done riding and unsaddled I saw these huge dry spots. I have seen conflicting info about dry spots. Some say that big ones aren’t bad and others say there should be no dry spots.. just looking for a little more clarification. Do you think these are ok? (See pics online)

vjlsi was raised dry spots are a sign of a poor fitting saddle..

CJEWhat type of pad did you use......

ShortyHorse11I use a 3/4 inch CE 100% wool felt pad

suzy2qteesounds like a pretty thin pad... may want to put a little more padding.

ShortyHorse11Really? I was thinking that was pretty thick, thought that was the standard thickness for most pads.. is there one you recommend? And if the saddle is to narrow wouldn’t a thicker pad just worsen the problem?

rachellyn80Don’t go saddle shopping until she gets fit. A 3/4” pad is not too thin, try a different pad and keep working her. Her back will change once she loses some fat and muscles up. The big dry spots are not as much of an issue as small pressure point spots.

wimpybFeel underneath the saddle without a pad and not cinched up. Is it really tight where the dry spots are?? Can you move your hand under that area without pushing the saddle back or not able to get your hand thru there at all?? That’s the way I would check it first before making any decisions. A 3/4” pad is the most I would use on any saddle unless the saddle is really a bad fit and you don’t have another option.

SoCalBarrelracerWhen it comes to fitting saddles and pads I have been taught that there are many things to consider. For starters less is sometimes more. No one wants to wear a thick sock with a shoe that is tight. Secondly, if there has been past damage to that area where white spots have started that is because there is damage to the hair follicle so assume that the sweat gland has also had some damage that would result in lil to no sweat in that same area. Next you must always re-member that thru breeding we have created confirmation that will not fit every saddle so not always will U have picture perfect sweat patterns. Ultimately U don’t want irregular

sweat patterns but if u must have them then u certainly don’t want hair to be roughed up at all and U don’t want it to appear to be swollen. Ulti-mately u want a square fitting saddle one that has no rocking no sliding or at least as lil as possible. And the biggest factor is U should always have a happy horse if there unhappy and ur saddle is a possible issue it’s probably more an issue than U think. I personally think the sweat marks are typical for most horses and saddles. If it’s a new horse I would take it a day at a time don’t jump to conclusions because U could have somethingn different happen over the next few weeks wih ur saddle and her sweat pattern, her attitude, the way she works, etc. good luck ! Fancy LassWould love to know too! This has been stressing me out .. Lol I have about the same dry spots you do .. I use a 7/8 inch 5 star pad. Bar NIF the saddle is not pitching and creating pressure try to add padding to that area such as building up that area ride in it see if the dry spots are gone. Pads can only do so much Saddle fitting is key but you can add to the pad to make it fit properly :) ShortyHorse11Thanks for all the help guys espe-cially socalbarrelracer. That is all great info and I think it’s a good idea to keep riding her and see what hap-pens.

GLPI don’t think that sweat patter is typi-cal at all. In the 40 years I have been riding I have never had that sweat pattern show up until I got my cur-rent horse and sure enough it was an ill fitting saddle. I worked with Wimpyb on here and purchased a saddle that fits him well. ShortyHorse11I will have to do that, I haven’t felt for that yet. I rode her again last night and the same dry spots showed up and we worked hard so it wasn’t just lack of sweat. The hair isnt ruffled or anything and she doesn’t seem to be acting like it is hurting her. I will run down tonight and just throw the saddle on her and see about getting my hand under there. Thanks!suzy2qteeI agree with as she loses weight the saddle will fit differently too... I wouldn’t be in a big rush to buy a new saddle because of this.

jaybNot trying to promote anything- but this videos might explain a few things for you! I know he is explain-ing with a rope saddle but still ex-tremely interesting.

100-Day HorseChallenge Winners

The 100-Day Horse Challenge, which introduced more than 25,000 newcomers to horses, rewards top hosts for their hard work with $100,000 in cash and prizes.

The American Quarter Horse Association - October 10, 2014The American Quarter Horse Association, along with the Marketing Al-liance of the American Horse Council is proud to announce the winners of the first 100-Day Horse Challenge. Hundreds of stables, organizations and businesses signed up to host events designed to attract newcomers to horse activities. Participating hosts shared the joy of horses with more than 25,000 people throughout the challenge.

The incentive was for the hosts to grow their businesses while compet-ing for $50,000 in first-place cash awards and $50,000 in prizes provided by the Marketing Alliance Members: AQHA, American Association of Equine Practitioners, Active Interest Media, Dover Saddlery, Farnam, Merck, Merial, National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Purina Animal Nutrition LLC, Platinum Performance, SmartPak, United States Equestrian Federation and Zoetis.

The 100-Day Horse Challenge offered three host divisions for small, me-dium or large stables, businesses and horses organizations. Hosts were re-quired to offer newcomers beginner-friendly opportunities to pet, groom or ride a horse. To be eligible, hosts had to meet insurance requirements, obtain releases and capture names and email addresses from participants for verification purposes.

The winner of the large division of the 100-Day Horse Challenge, and receiving $25,000 in cash, is Horses4Heroes, a Las Vegas-based, national non-profit organization with 300 affiliate facilities in 44 states and Canada. Successful programs such as “Operation Free Ride” at major events like Cheyenne Frontier days helped Horses4Heroes reach 2,120 newcomers. Horses4Heroes President and Founder Syndey Knott said, “It’s a dream come true to be recognized for our efforts to introduce new people to horses. First-time horse experiences are, without a doubt, life changing. It’s hard to believe how many people in this country have never seen or touched a horse. To be there the first time they see a horse is so great. They walk away happier, taller and brighter.” Prize money will be used as beginner-lesson scholarships for participating Horses4Heroes affiliates that generated the most newcomers.

Winning the medium division and $15,000 is Corvin Performance Horses of Canyon, Texas. Corvin Performance Horses reached a large number of newcomers by bringing their horses to community events such as “I Heart Canyon,” reaching out to children from low-income families. Me-lissa Corvin said that through interactions with horses, young children are able to build their confidence. “A horse is such a big animal that young children are often timid at first. After holding their hand and letting them pet them, they relax. Their fear escapes them and they gain confidence.” More than 400 children were able to meet and ride a horse at the “I Heart Canyon” event, in addition to taking their horses to home-school groups, day cares and other youth activity locations; for a total reach of 876 new-comers throughout the Challenge period.

The winner of the small division and the $10,000 cash prize, 16 Acres Equine Educational Complex of Union Grove, Wisconsin, had strong mo-tivations for participating in the 100-Day Horse Challenge. “We have a 14-year-old barn with a leaking roof. There are tarps everywhere. That was the motivator, but (participating in the Challenge) has turned into so much

more. It has opened doors,” said owner Jody Halladay. Her facility has reached out to hundreds of newcomers at a time by participating in many community events such as Dairy Days at a local farm, farmers’ markets, festivals, storytelling times and community gatherings at children’s activ-ity centers. When speaking of her delight in winning the cash prize, Hal-laday said, “It’s done more than just get us a new barn roof. We are going to be running the educational booth at the county fair next year; our lesson program has grown … things have come our way because of this!” In the 100-day period, 16 Acres shared the joy of horses with 2,840 newcomers.

For more success stories from the 100-Day Horse Challenge, to be includ-ed in future communications about the Challenge or for more information about Time to Ride, please contact [email protected].

The American Horse Council is a non-profit organization that includes all segments of the horse industry. While its primary mission is to represent the industry before Congress and the federal regulatory agencies in Washington, D.C., it also under-takes national initiatives for the horse industry. Time to Ride, AHC’s marketing alliance to connect horses and people, is such an effort. AHC hopes that Time to Ride will encourage people and businesses to participate in the industry, enjoy our horses and support their equine activities and events. AHC believes a healthy horse industry contributes to the health of Americans and America in many ways.

The Best Time to Submit Paperwork

Take advantage of quick turnaround time and 2014 prices by submitting your AQHA paperwork today.

The American Quarter Horse Association - September 29, 2014The period between September and December is typically the busiest time for AQHA when it is processing registrations, transfers and memberships for its valued customers. The Association wants to encourage people who have paperwork to send it in soon so it can be returned in a timely fashion.

“Our goal is to get our customers’ work back to them efficiently and accu-rately,” said AQHA Executive Vice President Don Treadway. “We want to provide the highest levels of customer service and quick turnaround times. During this upcoming busy season, we want to work with our members and encourage them to send their paperwork in and/or renew their mem-berships sooner rather than later.”

For members who are sending in transfers of ownership, AQHA is proud to offer a low, one-time fee to transfer a horse, no matter how many own-ers. Effective January 1, 2015, the transfer fee will increase from $15 to $20 per horse so there is more reason to send those in before the end of the year. The transfer fee has remained at $15 since 1997.

AQHA is excited to continue to transition into using new technology to streamline and speed up the application process for all members. In 2014, AQHA improved the photo upload process for online registrations and also launched an online genetic testing order form, giving members ac-cess to these services 24/7. Any work submitted online receives expedited service, as it is typically processed the next business day.

In 2015, registrations submitted via the online system will remain at their current pricing levels. Those that are not received online will see a $5 increase. For convenience, registrations can still be mailed and faxed to AQHA; however, members will save time and money by submitting them

Newsonline. By completing registrations online, members will save money on postage and won’t have to wait on the U.S. Postal Service for their paper-work to arrive at AQHA Headquarters.

As always, AQHA encourages customers to be sure their paperwork is filled out correctly and that any supporting documents and photos also are sent. Any customer who has a question can call AQHA Customer Service at 806-376-4811 for assistance.

“We want to demonstrate that we are committed to our customers and have them be as proud of the Association as we know they are of their horses,” said Treadway. “Our employees will work diligently and put in many long hours to provide members with the best, most courteous service possible at the lowest possible fees.”

Tyrney Steinhoff Credits First IFR Qualification to

“God, Family, and Hot Shot”

By: Tammie Hiatt - Tyrney Steinhoff of Vinita, OK is having a storybook season in the IPRA. She purchased her first IPRA card in 2012 with high hopes for a chance at rookie of the year, only to have injuries on both of her horses’ dash that goal. In 2013, she decided to finish up her youth eligibil-ity in the NBHA before moving on in her rodeo career.

“I’m glad that I waited until this year to get my IPRA card back. It’s been an awesome year,” said Tyrney. “I bought a new horse last October and he came on really strong and we’ve placed everywhere we’ve left them up. May was his first rodeo and I was kind of scared on how he would do, but he won third! I was really happy with him.”

“I am going to college so I made my goal for the year to rodeo around close to home and to make the IFR. I stayed steady on that until I got to 7th in the world standings and then I decided I wanted to be in the top 5 go-ing into the finals so I’ve been going a lot. I gave my main horse a month off and pulled my other horse up and hauled him and he won both rodeos I rode him at. What’s funny is they are both sorrel geldings so it’s a joke when they ask me what I’m riding and I say “a sorrel gelding.”

“I’m so blessed to have a family that supports me and makes sure I always have a good horse to ride,” said Tyrney. “My success all goes back to Hot Shot. I’m trying to be as good as he wanted me to be. That “want” and will to win keeps me on the road. I truly have God and my family on my side.”

“My main horse’s registered name is VF Smashed at Home and we call him Cash. I really like this horse. He’s really stout and strong. He’s about 15.1-15.2 and is really smooth, he never quits moving. I never think he’s running and then they’ll say our time and we will have outran them by 3 tenths.”

“We got Cash from Joyce Roston from Kellyville. We’d seen him a few years ago and really liked him and found out last fall that she had decided to sell him, so I went and tried him. We looked at him on a Tuesday and bought him on Wednesday, it happened fast. I took him to a jackpot and won it and we’ve been a team ever since, said Tyrney.

“My “other” sorrel gelding is Tin Zan Man. He’s 14 and I’ve had him for

4 years. He’s not quite as big as Cash is. I’m really fortunate because one gelding likes big , deep pens and the other likes small and hard. It feels great knowing I have horses that can run anywhere,” Tyrney said. “It’s pretty sweet.”

“Before I make a run, I always say the Lord’s Prayer. I’ve been raised that way, Dad was always back there with me and about two horses before me, we’d bow our heads and say the prayer. Dad’s not back there with me now very often, but I still bow my head and say the prayer.”

“My life is pretty busy now, I don’t have much down-time. I’m a junior in college at NSU in Broken Arrow. When I graduate I will be able to teach from 1st to 8th grade. I would love to teach 6th or 7th grade history or so-cial studies. So studying and my horses pretty much occupy all my time.”

“I try to take very good care of my horses,” she said. “They are what is getting me where I’m going, so I make sure they are well taken care of. Both of them will be coming to the IFR with me. I’ve got two bullets in the gun and I’m really excited to run there.”

Participants and Sponsors Share High Praise for Inaugural Thoroughbred

Owner ConferenceApproximately 300 people, including 120 longtime owners and 100 new or prospective owners, attended the inaugural Thoroughbred Owner Conference hosted by OwnerView October 13 – 16 in Lexington, Ky., and the event drew widespread praise from both participants and sponsors.

The conference was sponsored jointly by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, the Keeneland Association, The New York Racing Association Inc., and the Stronach Group.

Tom Durkin, the recently retired announcer, served as master of ceremo-nies for the conference.

“This conference successfully presented the excitement and profession-alism of Thoroughbred racing to existing and prospective owners in a way that’s never been done before,” Keeneland President and CEO Bill Thomason said. “There were a number of unique aspects — a high level of participation by industry leaders set in a unique environment and capped by an afternoon of live racing — that enhanced the experience for all its participants.”

“At the New York Racing Association, we are committed to providing an enhanced experience for our owners — as well as for the teams that they manage,” said Christopher Kay, chief executive officer and president of the New York Racing Association. “The important collaboration between

the New York Racing Association and amongst other industry leaders at this week’s conference will ultimately generate benefits, which will further sup-port our shared efforts to grow our sport and attract a new generation of fans.”

“This was absolutely a worthwhile endeavor and a lot of good inform ation was exchanged,” said Mike Rogers, president of The Stronach Group’s Racing and Gaming Division. “There was good interaction among the par-ticipants and everyone I talked to said it was a good experience.”

“At Del Mar, we are always looking for ways to enhance the owner experi-ence,” said Joe Harper, president and CEO of Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. “Sponsoring and participating in this conference gave us the opportunity to share some of our practices and at the same time learn more about what others are doing to recruit and retain Thoroughbred owners. Bill Thomason and his staff at Keeneland did a superb job in hosting the event.”

“One participant told me that he had been coming to Keeneland for 62 years and that listening to Tuesday’s speakers and panelists provided him with one of the most memorable days he’s ever spent here,” said Gary Falter, vice president of operations for OwnerView.

Tuesday’s panels included discussions about treating owners properly at racetracks, advice on entering the business from successful owners, and what makes a good owner/trainer relationship. There were also panels de-voted to finding the best equine athletes at auction and owner relationships with jockeys.

The afternoon culminated with a keynote address by legendary golfer and longtime Thoroughbred owner Gary Player followed by a reception at Keeneland that was hosted by Starlight Racing, Stonestreet Farm, Breed-ers’ Cup, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing

Form, and Bessemer Trust.

Panels on Wednesday focused on care of the Thoroughbred, young own-ers’ thoughts on the future of racing, and information resources for new and existing owners.

“Thoroughbred ownership has been a tremendous experience for both me and my family,” said TOBA Chairman Pete Willmott, who opened Wednesday morning’s session. “While you have to be prepared for set-backs, in balance, it is a great adventure.”

The closing address was give n by Ogden Mills Phipps, chairman of The Jockey Club. The panels were followed with afternoon racing at Keeneland.

“Those of you who have enjoyed visits to the winner’s circle certainly treasure those memories,” Phipps said. “Those of you who are new to the sport or considering Thoroughbred ownership will experience a unique thrill, a thrill that is hard to describe...I hope you get as much pleasure out of racing as I have and still do.”

OwnerView is a website and information resource developed by The Jock-ey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to assist both current and prospective Thoroughbred owners by providing accurate information on trainers, public racing syndicates, the process of purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred, racehorse retirement, and owner licensing.

The need for a central resource to encourage Thoroughbred ownership was identified in the comprehensive economic study of the sport that was com-missioned by The Jockey Club and conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2011. The OwnerView site was launched in May 2012. Additional infor-mation about OwnerView is available at ownerview.com.

The Jockey Club today released Report of Mares Bred (RMB) statistics for the 2014 breeding season. Based on RMBs received through October 13, 2014, The Jockey Club reports that 1,547 stallions covered 34,540 mares in North America during 2014.

The annual statistics represent approximately 92% of the mares that eventually will be reported as bred in 2014. According to his-torical trends, The Jockey Club expects to receive RMBs representing an additional 2,000 to 3,000 mares bred during the 2014 breeding season.

The number of stallions declined 8.9% from the 1,698 reported at this time in 2013, and the number of mares bred increased 1.1% from the 34,174 reported at this time last year.

The number of stallions covering 100 or more mares increased from 88 in 2013 to 97 in 2014. These stallions accounted for a greater percentage of the total mares reported bred this year — 36.4% of all mares bred in 2014 versus 34.0% of all mares bred in 2013 as reported at this time last year. RMB statistics for all reported stallions in 2014 are available through the Fact Book section of The Jockey Club’s website at jockeyclub.com.

Further book size analysis shows an 8.3% increase in the number of mares bred to stallions with a book size of 100 or more in 2014 when compared to 2013 as reported at this time last year; a 12.9% increase in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 75 and 99; a 4.8% decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 50 and 74; a 1.2% increase in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 25 and 49; and a 9.2% decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size fewer than 25.

The stallion Kitten’s Joy led all stallions with 204 mares bred in 2014. Rounding out the top five were Into Mischief, 203; Scat Daddy, 202; Mid-night Lute, 186; and Violence, 181.

Kentucky traditionally leads North America in Thoroughbred breeding activity. During 2014, Kentucky’s 233 reported stallions covered 16,826 mares, or 48.7% of all of the mares reported bred in North America. The number of mares bred to Kentucky stallions increased 7.2% percent com-pared with the 15,695 reported at this time last year.

Of the top 10 states and provinces by number of mares reported bred in

2012, Kentucky, Florida, and California, New York, and Maryland stal-lions covered more mares in 2014 than in 2013, as reported at this time last year. The following table shows the top 10 states, ranked by number of mares reported bred in 2014 through October 13:

Note: Each incident in which a mare was bred to more than one stallion and appeared on multiple RMBs is counted separately. As such, mares bred totals listed in the table above may differ slightly from counts of distinct mares bred.

In addition, Report of Mares Bred information on stallions that bred mares in North America is available through report 36P or a subscription service at equineline.com/ReportOfMaresBred.

There is only a hand full of riders that can consistently draw the crowd to the fence and Chris Coffey (see front cover) is one of them. Chris has won the IBRA National Finals Champion-ship more than anyone else. He has left as a back to back champion twice and on two dif-ferent horses!....Lately if Coffey doesn’t win there seems to be an element of surprise. Well there was no surprise this year because he pulled it off again making Streaking Romance a three time IBRA National Finals Champion and Coffey himself a five time National Finals Open Champion.

Sponsor/Directors RaceThis year we began our week at Nationals a day earlier to allow an additional move in day which seemed to run smoother. A lot of folks seemed to enjoy the extra day of rest for their horses. By the time Tuesday came around everyone was chomping at the bit. Especially Ky member Billy Hatzman. This was Billy’s first nationals on his new standout horse Dr. Dan Jet and he made an impressionable start. At Draw 71 Dan and Billy set the time to beat with a 14.733 over a half second ahead of the rest of the class. In the end there were only two horses in the 1D of the Sponsors/Directors race and Billy became the Sponsor/Directors race Champion for the second year in a row.

Guaranteed RaceThe Guaranteed Race was next up on the list. With nearly 400 entries in the class you usually have a pretty good idea at the end as to what you need to run during the week to get a taste of things and Billy Hatzman decided another 14.7 should do the trick. At draw 177 Billy took the lead again and won the class by more than a tenth of a second. Between the $800 won in the Sponsor/Directors Race and the $960 won in the Guaranteed Billy collected a total of $1760 on Tuesday.

Youth ClassesWhen it came to the youth, one team dominated the class this year. Indiana’s own Lane Hornberger and Smooth Talkin Play won both go rounds becoming the 2014 IBRA National Finals Youth Champion! Draw number one, Ashley Harlan, ran a 15.476 to take the 2D Youth Championship with MCB Sunkinda Pistol. Austin Crawford and Shine found their way to be the 3D Youth Cham-pions running a 15.981. Tennessee member Cameron Kennedy and Tailwind Tommy lead the 4D with a 17.075 to become Champions.

Masters Classes“Hope its like riding a bike” said Karen Mostoller-Calkin prior to running. Kar-en hadn’t sat on a horse in nearly three years but after placing 3rd in the Guaran-teed it was clear she wasn’t too rusty. But when she clocked a 14.655 to run the second fastest time of the weekend and also win the Masters 1st Go it was clear that like riding a bike some things you never forget, at least for some people.

The short go was looking to crown a Champion and it found one from Pennsyl-vania. Shana Grow has proven through the years that she can hang with the best and this year she topped them all with a 15.041 to be crowned the 2014 National Masters Champion. Shana’s horse, Smokin Payday, lived up to his name bring-ing in $605 for his run. Jeff Parks and DDR from IL claimed their piece of the pie with a 15.544 winning the Masters 2D Championship and collecting $450. Storme Camarillo and Hansford cleaned up the 3D taking in $300 and the Cham-pionship. Marcia Fetterhoff was meant to leave a Champion this year. Anyone who knows Marcia or her horse, Junior Jetty Moon, knows that she can and has dominated the pen at C Bar C on more than one occasion. But even with having a bad stall on the first the pair speed through the rest and made it out in time to win the 4D Championship collecting their share of the prize money and awards.

Open ClassesThe 1st Go of the Open seemed to last forever for IN Member Rikki Morse. At draw 68 she took the lead and held it for another 447 runs. Being that she is a Indiana member, Rikki and Avis have won a lot of money at C Bar C but this win raked in $2,532. Following the 1st Go Round on Wednesday came fun night and we had a blast! From tug of war, to the dog races, to the three man barrel race we had some really competitive teams and we had some really entertaining teams. To watch our youth take a break from the stresses of tough competition and just have fun is without a doubt the best part.

The 2nd Go on Thursday was also a long wait for the winner. Brad Shirey changed the leader board at draw 354. Running in reverse order that meant there were 353 entries still to run. It’s probably safe to say that Brad wasn’t sweating it too bad because his run aboard Pretty Boy Bullion set a new arena record and he put over two tenths on the field! While Brad cashed in $2,532, IL youth member Elaina McKinney accumulated more money than anyone in the go round by running 2nd in the 1D and winning the 2D for an impressive $3,741.

While nearly $60,000 was collected by 80 qualifiers in the go rounds of the Open, the glory is reserved for the Champions to be crowned Saturday. You rarely see Chris Cof-fey make a mistake but when he does you had better be prepared because he usually returns with a vengeance. This year proved to be one of Coffey’s more trying Finals with each run landing either in the cracks or with a no time. When the championship was on the line Chris pulled through to win his third National Finals with Streaking Romance and $3,085. The 2D Champion was taken by a team that can scare any competition, I See the Ghost and Brian Carman. Carman earned $2,315 for the win. Any time you see someone struggle and prevail it is inspiring and uplifting. In 2013 we watched Rickey Karroll show his determination after riding with leg injuries. In 2014 we got to see his hard work pay off being crowned the 3D National Champion. Rickey and his horse Lucky earned $1540. Most everyone loves to see Billy Frey come to the arena. There are folks who don’t even know him that will stop when they hear his name called just to give a hoot and shout with him as he rounds the barrels. This year his unique style paid off as he and Menubo Dry Doc collected $770.

The IBRA thanks all of you for the 2014 season. We have enjoyed it. We have had a lot of struggles with launching the new site and working on different changes to the rules etc. but when we are able to see everyone at Nationals and the Preferred Shows throughout the year it makes it all worth it. The Finals raised nearly $1,000 for Fed With Faith and we collected many items that will help feed and nurture the homeless of Louisville. A special thank you to everyone who donated monetarily and items. Congratulations to all of our National Finals Champions and all those who placed through the week. Please stay tuned over the next few months as we will be interviewing our Champions and highlighting them on a more individual level in the months to come. Good luck to everyone this season and God Bless.

NBHA Champion BioName: Angie CunninghamHometown: Kempton, Indiana

Can you tell us about your hometown? It’s just a small rural town, it has a post office and a bar and that’s about it!.

Where do you work and tell us a little about your career? I farm with my husband, Rod, we raise corn & soybeans. I show and train my own horses and give riding lessons along with starting a few outside horses on barrels.

Could you tell us a little about your family? I have two daughters that have been barrel racing with me from the time they were born, and still do. Jessie is married and has a Bachelor of Nursing degree and Kayla is an equine dentist, certified equine sports massage therapist – rehab therapy, and went to Troy Prince horseshoeing school.

What events do you compete in and what associations do you belong to? I compete in NBHA, the GBRA (Girls Barrel Racing Association) and the IBRA.When did you start to barrel race? I owe many thanks to my mom and dad who gave me

my first pony. They probably thought I would grow out of the horse thing, but have not to this day, and to my brother who got our first actual barrel horse “Red Super Chicken” when I was thirteen, and I haven’t given it up yet.

What are some of your biggest accomplishments? Setting the new arena record at the NBHA Indiana State Show in 2014 is the biggest accomplishment I have had in barrel racing. It is something I think every barrel racer dreams of. I guess I had “paid my dues” and it was finally my chance to have this accomplishment. I am blessed to have had this opportunity and would like to thank all of the people that have helped or encouraged me along the way.

Do you have any other hobbies? I don’t really have any other hobbies other than horses

Is there something nobody knows about you? HaHa, yes!

What are your goals for your future in barrel racing? I plan to continue running barrel horses and training them also. My daughters and I enjoy helping other people get into this sport and promoting the NBHA. We give lessons and do clinics at our local 4H clubs.

Tell us all about your horse(s) you ride, and especially about the horse who now holds the CBarC Expo Center arena record? I bought my horse TDL Smoke N Ice – out of Smoke N Sparks, at the QHRAI Speed Sale in October of 2012.

“Joker” and I did a lot of trail riding with Wayne Stapleton that fall, and I started him on barrels in early 2013. He is a big boy, about 16.1, but barrel racing seemed to be easy for him right away. He is a fun horse to have and he really lives up to his name.

What are your thoughts about the CBarC Expo Center, the ground conditions and the NBHA State Show as a whole? I can’t say enough good things about CBarC Expo Center where our NBHA State Show was held. Cindy and Carl Harlan, the owners of the facility, have invested so much in making a lot of improvements in the facility and it truly shows. The ground and the ground crew at this show did an amazing job keeping the ground in fantastic condition for the entire show. Our new state director, Lyn Overholt has done an amazing job this year with all the awards presented to the Top Five Division qualifiers, and seeing to it that the show ran on time and very smoothly.

Any other things about yourself or your horse that you would like to have people know about? I really could talk about my horse and my daughters a lot more than about myself, but it was a great day setting the arena record at the CBarC Expo Center I will admit!

Kiss the Pig! An envelope for each director for the state was passed… for every dollar “vote” the director with the most votes got to kiss the pig (yes it was a real live miniature pig) donated by James Gang Royal Mini Pigs.

There was a tie and IN02 directors Brian and Angie Brown were the winners. The pig didn’t mind the kiss from Angie, but squealed like crazy when it was Brian’s turn! Unfortunately, the pictures “mysteriously” disappeared from Brent Puhl’s camera…. We are all wondering how much Brian had to pay Brent for that to happen! (Ha ha!)

Your mares and the sires you select for them are critical to your breeding program. Many people breed based on bloodlines alone. There are many well bred horses with faulty

conformation. There are also horses with faulty conformation that have won a lot of money. That faulty conformation will carry on to future generations. Your breeding herd needs to have very good to excellent conformation. Make sure the stallions you breed to don’t just look good in a conformation photo. Ask to see other views of the stallion so you can get a good evaluation of his conformation. If you can, go see him in person. You will need to scan and dissect many pedigrees for possible breeding. After they pass the bloodline, family and racing history test then let conformation be you next culling point.

A good breeder will cull 90-95 percent of possible breedings based on conformation alone. You need to be looking down the road for soundness – that mare or stallion is going to be producing generations of babies for the track or the arena, and they have to be able to perform for the long haul.

Infusing some “hybrid vigor” by outcrossing is another way to raise the performance level in your stock. Knowing that outcrosses are essential for the health and well-being of a line of horses is one thing; knowing which horses to cross is something else. Your first outcross is your best, hybrid-vigor foal and is going to be a superior performer in most cases, but they don’t breed as true since they have a wider variety of genetic information in their

DNA. That is the general rule, but there will be a small percentage that will pass on their genetic makeup, so that a percentage of that second and third generation will have and pass on their performance ability. That is when you get a superior breeding animal.

It can take years and years of dedicated breeding to even produce one superior animal as a broodmare or stallion, and it can take four to 12 years to see how their get produce and whether they are consistent. If you don’t have a good cross to begin with, you can very well end up back at the drawing board.

Horses bred to run 440 yards have a different type of muscle fiber than a foundation-bred Quarter Horse. Slow-twitch Type 1 muscle fibers

Doc, I have been breeding and racing and barrel racing horses for quite a while and just can’t seem to break into the top tier. I think my nutritional, farrier and conditioning program is where it should be. Is there anything I should pay attention to breeding wise to help my program?

Ask the Vet with Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM

Volcom is an example of a well balanced individual with excellent conformation. He has a his-tory of staying sound by running and winning in Grade 1 competition for 4 years. His family has the same type of history of racing well, staying sound and producing the same as evidenced by Volcom being a Grade 1 winner and producing 1 All American Futurity winner and 2 finalist with 4 crops to race.

work off of aerobic metabolism, and that’s how they produce their energy. Horses with the right amount of slow twitch fibers combined with the correct amount of fast twitch fibers can have a quick start but also last 440 yards. These are horses with a highly oxidative type of muscle fiber, whereas in other lines, you will have Type 2 fast-twitch fibers, which are further divided into fast twitch types 2A and 2B, and are low-oxidative fibers. The fast twitch fibers give the fast break and speed at shorter distances

If you are breeding your mares for speed at certain distances but want that hybrid vigor as well, then you could choose your stallion based on how well he and his family did in races did at that distance. For the maximum first generation hybrid vigor you want a stallion that performed well at the distance you are breeding for and has bloodlines that are different from your mare’s bloodlines. Those horses may not breed as true later on but they will give the maximum effect of hybrid vigor versus future generations.

This is a simplistic explanation of a complicated process, and if you are not careful it’s even possible that while trying to produce a speedier

race or barrel horse, you could end up slowing him down through the breeding process. So it’s imperative to know the full ins and outs of breeding before producing more horses. There is some science to it. When you are looking to produce the whole package, start with a pedigree of fast horses, not just one generation that produced a superstar. What you want is a long line of generation after generation producing speed horses. And if you are looking to have the soundness in there, you have to look for great conformation, bone makeup, strength, size of their feet – the whole body phenotype that can not only produce speed, but a horse in which the body stays together.

If you decide to sell some of your mare’s offspring, there is always a market for a high-quality horse. While not every horse can sell at the highest dollar, consistency is usually rewarded. You may already be incorporating these ideas into you program. The important thing to remember is to breed horses that have excellent conformation and good families with a history of staying sound and performing well. If you use those guideposts in your selection process, you should eventually be successful.

Bright Eyed Vision Takes Hoosier Park Classic

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 10, 2014 – Bright Eyed Vision and rider Victor Olivo proved to be too tough in the 18th running of the $83,000 Hoosier Park Classic at Indiana Grand Friday, Oct. 10. The duo covered the 400-yard dash over a sloppy racetrack in a time of :19.822 seconds to earn the win, which was the 19th career trip to the winner’s circle for Bright Eyed Vision.

Starting from post two, Bright Eyed Vision first had pressure from Flys No Mystery on the inside and Sum Fun For Magic and Gerardo Garrido on the outside. Once he had drawn away from those two, he was left on the front end all alone. Several from the outside rushed up to challenge in the final strides, but it was too little too late as Bright Eyed Vision captured the title by one-half length at the finish line. Tinys First Pepsi and Rodney Prescott made a gallant effort late to finish second over a close finish with Sum Fun For Magic, who had to settle for third.

Bright Eyed Vision is owned by Faustino Bueno Sr. and trained by Efrain Bueno. The eight-year-old veteran gelding increased his career bankroll to more than $357,000 with his third win of 2014. The Ausual Suspect son has earned 10 of his 19 career wins over Indiana Grand’s racing surface, and his time of :19.822 seconds would have been a track record. However, on Thursday, Oct. 9, Pistolpacking Pepsi established a new track record for the 400-yard dash in a time of :19.788 seconds to earn the honor. The old mark was set in 2012 by Got Courage and Oscar Delgado in a time of :19.833 seconds.

Bright Eyed Vision was the second choice by bettors, paying $7.80, $4.60 and $3.20 across the board. Lauren George is the breeder on the big brown Indiana-bred gelding, who earned the title in the $85,000 Bob Woodard Memorial Classic earlier this summer at Indiana Grand.

The Hoosier Park Classic was one of three stakes races held during the inaugural pari-mutuel racing season at Hoosier Park in 1997. The stakes race started out at a distance of 350 yards but moved to a 400-yard dash in 2004. The stakes record for the race now belongs to Bright Eyed Vi-sion with his 2014 win in :19.822 seconds. The old mark was set last season, which was the first year for the race to be contested at Indiana Grand, in a time of :19.988 seconds by Chilled Six Pack and Ben Creed.

Chilled Six Pack was back to defend his title in 2014, but after a hop at the start, was never in contention for the win. Bright Eyed Vision finished second to Chilled Six Pack last year, missing the win by one-half length.

Pistolpacking Pepsi Dominant inSterlie Bertram Memorial

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 25, 2014 – Pistolpacking Pepsi has been strong all season and he just took his talent to the next level. The three-year-old gelding rallied to a commanding one and one-quarter length win in the sixth running of the Sterlie Bertram Memorial Stakes Satur-day, Oct. 25 during the final all-Quarter Horse Night at Indiana Grand. In the process, Pistolpacking Pepsi also became the first Quarter Horse to ever win five races in one season at the track, showing how consistent he has been throughout the season.

Pistolpacking Pepsi was joined by Jockey Jose Beltran for the journey from post two. The heavily favored duo didn’t have an especially good start, but it didn’t matter. Once he got his feet under him, the son of Jesse James Jr. took off, rolling ahead of his opponents in the 400-yard dash for his fifth straight win. Eyem Jumpn and Yordanis Amaro were the closest at the end to finish a solid second over Beach Runner and Juan Guerrero for third.

“This horse (Pistolpacking Pepsi) gives you no problems,” said Beltran, who has guided the horse to four of his last five wins. “He likes running and he was the best horse. The only thing he doesn’t really like is too much whip. He will just run on his own.”

Owned by Robert Ray and Ron Brown, Pistolpacking Pepsi covered the race in a time of :19.890 seconds, which was close to a track record and was a new stakes record. Brown also trains the horse, who is now eight for 15 in his career.

“I’m so tickled right now and happy for the connections,” said Brown. “I’ve never done drugs before, but I can’t imagine any drug being bet-ter than this high I have. Getting five wins this season is just another feather in his cap.”

Pistolpacking Pepsi increased his career bankroll to more than $283,000. The sorrel gelding, which has a large roan birthmark on his left flank, was bred and raised by Diane Keiser, a long time breeder in the state of Indiana.

“We don’t do anything special with this horse,” said Brown. “Just feed him good alfalfa hay, and of course he gets a Pepsi once in a while, al-though he likes diet Pepsi better. No one in our barn is allowed to drink anything but Pepsi, that’s a rule before I hire you. He (Pistolpacking Pepsi) is officially on vacation now for the next six months. He’s going to the farm just to be a horse for a while.”

Pistolpacking Pepsi will have one more task on his agenda this season. He and stablemate, Tinys First Pepsi, will pose for the Brown Stable’s annual Christmas card. The horses are lovingly referred to as the “Pepsi Boys” from the stable.

The Sterlie Bertram Memorial was named in honor of Sterlie Bertram, who was instrumental in getting the Indiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association going. He even went out to Texas to get races approved at the Indiana State Fairgrounds prior to pari-mutuel racing in the state. Several of Bertram’s family members and friends were on hand to assist with the trophy presentation to Brown, who noted that he knew Sterlie when he was racing in the state of Indiana.

“My dad (Sterlie Bertram) was always involved in racing and even had a couple of his own horses do well, including Lost Hope, who led the nation in wins one year,” said Mike Bertram, who is a retired jockey. “At one time, we had about 60 head of horses at our farm near Modoc (Indiana). His motto was, ‘the coffee pot is always on.’”

Horses from Bertram’s farm have been detected in a lot of the breeding in the state. The younger Bertram noted they just lost the final horse that was part of his father’s string.

“We just put the last horse of my father’s string down two weeks ago,” said Mike. “Her name was ‘Sissy’ and she was one of his brood mares. She was 29 years old.”

Stinkin Rich Prospers in Miss Roxie Little Futurity

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 25, 2014 – He has been on everyone’s radar all season and Stinkin Rich lived up to the hype Saturday, Oct. 25 at Indiana Grand. The flashy grey gelding with the distinctive white eye was untouchable in the seventh running of the Miss Roxie Little Futurity. Guided by jockey Ben Creed, Stinkin Rich completed the 350 yard dash in a time of :17.592 seconds, which almost set a new track record but did establish a new stakes record for the race.

Starting from post eight, Stinkin Rich came out of the gates a little crooked but Creed quickly got him corrected and back on track. The two-year-old son of One Famous Eagle found his stride and the pink blinkers of the Raper barn were very visible as the horse to watch heading to the finish line. Stinkin Rich put his long stride to good use in the final steps, winning the race by a comfortable one and three-quarter lengths over Rock Crushin Dynasty and jockey Yordanis Amaro, who were just a neck ahead of their stablemate Stone Toasted and Juan Guerrero for third.

The win aboard Stinkin Rich marks the biggest win for Creed, who is a graduate of the North American Riding Academy in Lexington, Ky. It is the second win in a row for Creed aboard Stinkin Rich.

“All I can say is ‘Wow’,” said Creed. “I worked this horse (Stinkin Rich) out of the gate before the trial and he exploded. I have never been on a horse, Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred, like him. He stumbled just a little out of the gate tonight but once he got straight, he loves to run. That’s really my only job is to keep him straight.”

Stinkin Rich is quickly living up to his name, boosting his career earn-ings to more than $204,000. The homebred gelding has not finished worse than second in six career starts, earning wins in four of his starts for owner and breeder Carolyn Bruce. Stinkin Rich adds the Miss Roxie Little Futurity to his resume, which also includes a stakes win in the $130,000 Jaguar Rocket Futurity held earlier in the year at Indiana Grand. Ron Raper, Indiana’s all-time winning Quarter Horse trainer with seven titles to his credit at Indiana Grand, conditions the horse for the Bruce family.

“I had horses for the Bruces’ a long time ago and they came back to me as a trainer a couple of years ago,” said Raper. “This horse has always

shown promise. He was a little spooky starting out, but he got over that. These kinds of horses don’t come along very often.”

Raper noted unless something comes up wrong, Stinkin Rich will be paid in late to the $500,000 Hialeah Futurity. He said they will call Monday morning to get the gelding into the race. The trials are slated for early December with the final set for later on that month. Hialeah is the destination for Raper’s stable following the meet at Indiana Grand.

The win was one of two on the card for Raper, who moved one ahead of Randy Smith in the trainer standings. A few more races are scheduled for the 2014 meet, which ends Saturday, Nov. 1. Raper could also reach last year’s records that he set of most wins in one meet (28) and most purse earnings in one meet ($673,393). He currently has 26 wins this season with purse earnings of $664,855.

The Miss Roxie Little Futurity becomes the second highest purse in Quarter Horse racing history in the state of Indiana. The race’s total of $198,900 nearly matched the $199,200 Gordon Mobley Futurity held earlier in the year at Indiana Grand in late July. This is the second year the race has been contested at Indiana Grand, moving from Hoosier Park Racing & Casino after the 2012 season when all Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing relocated full time to Indiana Grand.

Seize the Win Surprises in the Governor’s Stakes

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 25, 2014 – Never underestimate a Matt Frazier-trained Quarter Horse at Indiana Grand. Grabbing little atten-tion before the race, Seize the Win and Shanley Jackson snatched the spotlight in the 18th running of the $128,000-added Governor’s Stake at Indiana Grand Saturday, Oct. 25 during the final all-Quarter Horse Night of the 2014 season.

Starting from post three, Seize the Win had a good start in the 10-horse final and was a contender from the start. Halfway through the 350-yard dash, the two-year-old son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon began to pull away from his opponents. There was only one horse left in the final strides to put away, and that is just what Seize the Win did to earn the victory

by one-half length over Iz Special James and Rodney Prescott, who never gave up trying to close on the leaders. Jesse Jr First Down and Ben Creed, the race favorites, finished third. The time of the race was :17.582 seconds to eclipse the old stakes record of :17.652 seconds set by Stone Heading West and Prescott in 2009.

“When the other horse (Iz Special James) started coming at him late, it did cause him (Seize the Win) to dig in,” said Jackson, who had three wins on the evening to move back to the top on the leading jockey standings. “I had to keep his attention, because when I slacked off, he slacked off. He’s still learning how to run, but he’s really a nice horse.”

Seize the Win is fairly untried, only having four career starts for owner Glenn Graff. The Texas bred colt earned his first career win in the Gov-ernor’s Stakes, which was the first-ever pari-mutuel race held in the state of Indiana in 1997 at Hoosier Park. Seize the Win increased his career bankroll to more than $77,882. His earnings of $1,082 heading into the race were the smallest amount of the field.

“This horse (Seize the Win) is still pretty green,” said Frazier. “We are headed to Hialeah at the end of the meet here (in Indiana) and he will head to the Futurity at Hialeah. At least, that’s the plan.”

The Frazier family has been long associated with racing in the state of Indiana. Dan Frazier first came on the scene and fared well before turn-ing the operation over to his son. Although they started in Thorough-breds, the Frazier Stable is now exclusively a Quarter Horse operation.

“We have a string here at Indiana Grand and we have some in Lex-ington at the Thoroughbred Training Center, which is our home base,” said Frazier. “Right now, we have about 25-30 horses. We are fortunate to have a great string of owners, and I am very fortunate to have great parents who have always been supportive.”

The win for Frazier was his 15th of the meet. He currently rests in fourth place on the leading trainer standings. The win in the Governor’s Stake is his fifth stakes win at Indiana Grand since beginning his career as a trainer in 2008. Seize the Win paid $9.80, $7.40 and $3.60 across the board for his efforts in the Governor’s Stake. He was the third choice by bettors in the field of 10.

Jettastic Soars to Victoryin QHRAI Derby

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 25, 2014 – Jettastic and Jose Beltran were seeking their fourth straight win and they accomplished their goals, win-ning the $100,000 QHRAI Derby at Indiana Grand Saturday, Oct. 25. The duo, selected as the second favorite of the seven horse field, earned the win in a time of :19.834 seconds to extend their streak to four.

Jettastic was in the mix from the start. He battled alongside his foes until halfway through the 400-yard dash when he finally started getting the advantage on main rival BP Hit the Bigtime and Rodney Prescott. It was a fight to the finish between the two horses, but Jettastic prevailed by a neck in the end. Secrets Fly and Ben Creed finished third in the three year old stakes race.

“The horse (Jettastic) didn’t break too well,” said Beltran, who earned his second winner of the night aboard Jettastic. “But I tried the whip to get him going because I told myself that I need to win this race.”

Jettastic responded to redeem himself in stakes action after finishing a neck back in second during the $73,000 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby in July. Although he now has five career wins, the victory in the QHRAI Derby is the first stakes win for Jettastic, who more than doubled his career earnings to top the $100,000 mark as a result of his efforts.

Jettastic is owned by Rebecca Barton and trained by Tony Cunningham, who is based in Michigan. Cunningham has raced on the Indiana pari-mutuel circuit since the first year in 1997. He is ranked second in wins on the list of all-time leading trainers at Indiana Grand.

“Coming into the race tonight, I was just really hoping for a safe trip,” said Cunningham. “This horse (Jettastic) has been solid all year long. He’s really a nice individual.”

Jettastic has made all 13 of his career starts at Indiana Grand. Beltran has been aboard the Jet Black Patriot colt in his last seven starts. The Texas bred Jettastic paid $5.80, $4.00 and $3.00 across the board.

The QHRAI Derby, now in its 18th running, was one of three stakes races held during the inaugural season of Quarter Horse racing at Hoo-sier Park in 1997. The stakes joins the Governor’s Stakes as well as the Hoosier Park Classic as the three oldest pari-mutuel stakes in the state of Indiana. The stakes record was set in 2012 by Feature My News and Shanley Jackson in a time of :19.587 seconds for trainer Matt Frazier.

Cootinks Flying Ace Upsetsin Indiana Championships

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 25, 2014 – It may be the newest stakes race on the program at Indiana Grand, but the second running of the $84,520-added Indiana Championships turned out to be the most excit-ing on the 10-race Quarter Horse program Saturday, Oct. 25 at Indiana Grand. Cootinks Flying Ace and rider Ben Creed came from nowhere to upset the field of 10 seasoned veterans to take home the top prize.

Starting from post nine, Cootinks Flying Ace flew under the radar in the early stages of the 400-yard dash. Several powerhouses were in the field and reeled in most of the attention to the inside of the track with heavily favored Habits Secret and Yordanis Amaro and several others getting caught up in several bumps out of the gate. Once clear, Finche and Shanley Jackson got the early calls from the middle of the pack along with Bright Eyed Vision and Victor Olivo.

Cootinks Flying Ace began to rally midway through the race and mo-mentum was building up as the sorrel gelding surged by the leaders on the outside. In the end, Cootinks Flying Ace finished in the trio on the outside and had the neck advantage at the wire for his second win since joining the Ron Raper barn. Finche finished a neck ahead of Bright Eyed Vision, who was a clear third ahead of the rest of the field.

“He (Cootinks Flying Ace) was awfully hot in the post parade,” said Creed, who earned his second stakes win of the night. “I tried to get him to settle down but he wasn’t agreeing with me. He was just ready to go. This race was close to a track record time, and it felt pretty fast.”

Cootinks Flying Ace is owned and trained by Raper. The Fly Jess Fly gelding now has six wins in 18 career starts and boosted his career earnings to more than $108,000. Cootinks Flying Ace was only one of two horses heading into the race with earnings of less than $109,000, showing the depth of experience and success of the field.

“One of my friends use to own him (Cootinks Flying Ace) and I bought him,” said Raper, who capped off the night with a training double. “He’s a handful, but I’m probably the only one that knew how good he was. When you win a race like this and no one expects you to, that’s the good one.”

Cootinks Flying Ace lit up the tote board, paying $51.60, $16.00 and $12.60 across the board. He was the second longest shot on the board of the Indiana Championships.

Cootinks Flying Ace will accompany the Raper Stable to Hialeah Park, the winter destination for Indiana’s all-time leading trainer who has seven career training titles to his credit at Indiana Grand.

The Indiana Championships capped off a Quarter Horse program that included five stakes races, marking the richest card ever offered for the sprinters in the Hoosier State. With more than $710,000 in purses, the evening dedicated to Quarter Horse racing marked the sixth all-Quarter Horse night for 2014 at Indiana Grand.

1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooters

Thanksgiving is one of this cowgirl’s favorite holidays. The beautiful crisp weather, raking leaves, the smell of the turkey dinner...AND...can’t forget the horses with their new hairy coats! Isn’t it amazing how Mother Nature takes care of her animals? She makes sure they get enough hair to keep them cozy

(normally), however sometimes we need to get those heavy quilted blankets out to insure warmth.

The first weekend of October was a FUN event for the 1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association! Each year we try to give something back to the local community by hosting a Charity event. This year we choose the Shriner’s Burns Hospital in Cincinnati to be our recipient. Our theme for the shoot was “Cowboy/Cowgirl Hero’s and favorites of the Silver Screen and TV.” Our shooters dressed in their favorite Cowboy/Cowgirl outfits! It was fabulous...there were appearances by The Lone Ranger (Rick Sage), Tonto (Evian Triplet), Miss Kitty (Diane Sage), Son of Pale Face (Dan App), Cat Balou (Tracy Snyder), Man from Snowy River (Dennis Clevenger), Tom Mix (Bobby Ruwe), Miss Kitty (Nancy Elberty), Annie Oakley (Joyce McKinney & Connie App), Clint Eastwood (Todd Woulms), Johannes Wulff, Allen Corrnet, Tristin Vrh,and Tyler Vrh all dressed as Dan App. Ian Boettcher as Bobby Ruwe. The Loan Stranger (John StClair), Wyatt Earp (Joyce Nelson), and sooo many more! The costume winners were Connie App and Evian Triplet! When we were finished shooting for the day we all enjoyed a delicious chicken dinner with sides and desserts brought by shooters. Next...were the Dog Races... It was amazing! There were small dog races, medium dog races, big dog races, reruns, small-med-large races more reruns. It was hilarious...I think Colt from Jackpot Acres was the overall champion-but who could tell? Laughing...loose dogs...more laughing...doggie treats...retrieving dogs...it was wild! Lola was fast and ran to her owner! LuLu was the fastest to her truck! Skyline wanted to play along the way! Daisy played with Tally all the way! Ziva was really running fast and right past her owner and into the club house! I think we will definitely have more Dog Races! On Sunday, Doug Sheldon started our day with a blessing for the shooters, horses and most importantly our families at Cowboy Church. Our shoot titled, Oktoberfest Zinmiamitown! Top 10 shooters; Dennis

Clevenger, 2. John St Clair,3. Cary Barrow, 4. Bobby Ruwe, 5. John Clark, 6. Alan Cornett, 7. Eric Nelson, 8. Joyce Nelson, 9 Marcy Luttrell, 10. Ben Butler.

We congratulate Wyatt Stephenson on his move up to a men’s level 2. He is now wearing a brand new shiney 1st Ohio level 1 WINNER buckle! Horses (age..color..quirk. Name): Right now I’m riding Scooch. Scooch belongs to a good friend, Alli Rice, who offered me the chance to ride her after I lost my pleasure horse, Skinner (Emaigned That) on June 1. Scooch is an 8 year old paint mare.

Who taught you to ride: My mom

Mentor: My mom. She introduced me to riding and continues to ride with me and take me places. Alli Rice has also been a big mentor. She pushed me to not give up when I wanted to after losing my horse. I felt like giving up on riding and she encouraged me to keep pushing through it and to always give a helping hand to others who need it.

Since just starting, what do you think of barrel racing and/or plea-sure: I think pleasure helped me learn how the horse moves and how to control each part better. It also taught me how to control my seat. I have also tried english and each discipline gives me a better perspec-tive of riding. Learning these different styles gave me a foundation to make the transition to barrel racing. I enjoy barrel racing a lot, more than anything I have done with horses and hope to get the chance to keep doing it!

Your favorite horse: Skinner has been one of my favorite horses I have owned. Since I have lost him, I am really enjoying Scooch.

Advice to fellow horse friends: Don’t be afraid to try something dif-ferent. Riding different horses and styles make you a better rider.

Hobbies: Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hunting

TEEN CORRAL w/Clint Van

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfa-ther as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run bar-rels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth bar-rel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world nu-merous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cous-ins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Happy ThanksgivingClint Van

Rodeo NewsIJRAIntroducing 2014-2015

IJRA Princess, Maci Zimmerman

Hello, my name is Maci Zimmerman, and I’m currently in the seventh grade at Tri-West Middle School and am so happy to say that I am the 2014-2015 IJRA Princess!!! I ran for IJRA princess be-cause I felt that I could be a role model to all the new and old members of IJRA. I wanted to make each and every member feel welcome and to make a positive impact on our Association.

The contest was nerve racking but it was a lot of fun! There was never a dull moment. The contest taught us all that it’s okay to be nervous when your speaking in front of people. A big part of the contest was the speech. My speech was about the reasons why I wanted to be IJRA princess. A big part of it

was Chalee Gilliland. She was my very first friend I had in IJRA. She showed me the person I wanted to be. I was always really shy about IJRA and Chalee is the one that taught me to open up and that rodeo is about being yourself. Un-fortunately Chalee is no longer with us. She passed away from cystic fibrosis, but she will always have a lasting impression on the ones that knew her.

During my rein as princess, I want to make a positive impact on the association. I want to be able to help the younger kids and the association as much as possible. I also want to be a friend to all the new members. In addition to helping the association, I want to be a leader in the community and help with other charitable associa-tions. One of my first initiatives as IJRA Princess is helping Riley Childrens Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. In honor of September be-ing Childhood Cancer Awareness month, I have asked our mem-bers to bring items that Riley hospital is in need of to our next rodeo on October 18th & 19th. I will take those items to Riley within a few days after the rodeo. Additionally, October is breast-cancer awareness month and I have asked our members to wear pink on Saturday in order to support breast-cancer awareness. I’ll spend some time over our winter break thinking of other ways I can make a positive impact in and around our community.

I’m looking forward to all of the upcoming rodeos. If anyone is wanting to join IJRA and all of it’s excitement, please contact one of our board members. Our website is www.ijra.org. On that website is also our rodeo schedule. I’m sure you’ll enjoy IJRA as much as I do!

Thanks,Maci Jo ZimmermanIJRA Princess

The wolf moved slowly by the little creek near the place where Mom lives. I could feel the cold of his eyes, which never left

me. The evilness of his intent, the heartlessness of his concern covered his words ~ “I’ve taken her mind.”

My head dropped at the reality of his words.

I felt the presence of God behind me. His enormity dwarfed the nearby trees. I heard him say boldly ~

“She’ll get a new one!”

The wolf grinned at me, as he must when he has been able to steal a lamb from the shepherd. He howled in praise of himself. Blood dripped from his words as he tasted their succulence ~

“I’ve taken love from her!”

The words plunged into my heart.

I felt the presence of God move beside me. He moved a single finger to His lips to quiet the beast. The howl ceased. His

words echoed across the lawn, through the doorway, down the hallway to her room and touched her, as she slept. The divine

whispered ~

“Not my love!”

The devil scowled and paced outside her window in the dark-ness of a hidden moon. He sneered at me, “I’ve taken soul

from her.”

I covered my eyes, so I did not have to see him. My hands covered my ears from his words.

God laughed ~

“Her soul belongs to me!”

The sun began to rise and the wolf ran from The Light. There was darkness to find somewhere else.

He’ll be back.

God will already be there.

(My mom, Connie, suffers from this cursed disease - Alzheimer’s. This month, I pay tribute to her and her battle with this demon. It is an evil like no other. If you have had a love one with Alzheimer’s, you under-stand. Love them the best you can. If you have not, get on your knees and thank God. Tell someone you love them, today.)

C.S. Lewis:

It may be possible for each to think too much of his own potential glory hereafter; it is hardly possible for him to think too often or too deeply about that of his neighbor.

The load, or weight, or burden of my neighbor’s glory should be laid daily on my back, a load so heavy that only humility can carry it, and the backs of the proud will be broken.

It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare.

All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations.

It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics.

There are no ordinary people.

You have never talked to a mere mortal.

Nations, cultures, arts, civilization—these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat.

But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit—immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.

This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn.

We must play.

But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously—no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption.

And our charity must be real and costly love, with deep feeling for the sins in spite of which we love the sinner—no mere tolerance or indulgence which parodies love as flippancy parodies merriment.

Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses.

—The Weight of Glory (HarperOne, 2001), pp. 45-46.

This is a long quote, but one of my favorites. It really makes me think about eternity and my loved ones. Eternity is a long time, right?

What I also take from this passage and what helps me to look at my friends and family in a different way, is that we are all eternal beings...eternal beings destined for eternity.

When I look at my kids after pondering on this passage, I see more than just their cute faces. I realize that they are making choices and being influenced in the physical sense as well as the spiritual sense. They are continually growing (not just physically, but spiritually.)

I am also still growing - not on purpose on the physical side - but working on the spiritual growth. I realize that I am a work in progress.

Philippians 1:6Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

We will all spend eternity somewhere. I pray that you have accepted the gift of salvation and are working on becoming spiritually what God intended for you to be.

In the meantime, as C.S. Lewis said, “we must play.” Let’s have a good time together! Let’s also remember to take each other serious enough to be concerned for each other’s eternal well-being.

Happy Trails & God Bless! Love in Christ,

Christa

Salvation is a gift and a choice......Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

But as we rode backI looked around the landEven a ol` cowboyKnew it come from the Lords hand Now the air was cleanThe mountains covered all in whiteTrees all coloredWhat a glorious sight

Stoppin` at the riverOur horses drop their headsDrinkin` that cool waterNot a word was said When we topped the hillThe ranch was before our eyesAn eagle was a soarin` In the deep blue sky I turned to my pardsSaid we’ve been called saddle trampsWorkin` cows all our daysLivin ` in cowboy camps But pards we are luckySo give the Lord our praiseBecause we’ve been cowboysAll our born days

Unreachable Star retiredat Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 1, 2014 – It was a tribute only fitting for a champion as Unreachable Star took his final steps into a winner’s circle Wednesday, Oct. 1. After a soft tissue problem was discovered on his front leg, Trainer Tim Glyshaw and David and Loren Hebel-Osborne of Loosen Up Stable made the decision it was time to retire Indiana’s richest Thoroughbred.

Unreachable Star was greeted by a winner’s circle full of well wishers, including breeder Dr. Crystal Chapple. Track Announcer Bill Downes read the many accomplishments over the years by Unreachable Star, including his Indiana Horse of the Year title in 2009 as well as being named Indiana’s Older Horse of the Year four years in a row.

With more than $784,000 in career earnings, 17 wins and seven stakes victories, Unreachable Star has shown how versatile he is, winning on different surfaces and different distances. His final win was recorded in the 2013 in the $85,000 William Henry Harrison Stakes, a stakes race he won three times during his career. His final race was in early August over the turf in the $85,000 AJ Foyt Stakes where he finished third.

“It’s really sad because he’s been with us so long, but I’m glad he’s okay,” said Glyshaw. “The older he’s gotten the more aggressive he’s gotten. He plays a lot in the barn and he will be missed. He will require six months for the suspensory to heal, and right now, there are no real plans for him. He will go back to the farm (Deerfield Farm) and enjoy time with Grand Traverse, who is now 11 and was retired last year.”

Luis Dominguez, who has served as the horse’s caretaker for the past five years, and Natalie Glyshaw led Unreachable Star down the track. He was presented with a blanket honoring his achievements as well as a watermelon, his favorite barn treat. He was then led to the paddock for more pictures and some final peppermints for his journey to Kentucky.

“He has been a special addition to the barn,” said David Osborne, who is a longtime owner and now serves in the Kentucky legislature. “We bought him privately from the breeder (Chapple) because we used to own his sire (Unloosened). He only stood two seasons and he died. We had bred a couple of mares to him, and so had Crystal. We were trying to accumulate a few more of his offspring, so we bought a package deal.”

Osborne notes the package came with a little twist. Besides the two colts, one of which was Unreachable Star, they purchased a Welsh Corgi from Chapple, who later became known by the name of Max.

“That’s what sealed the deal,” smiled Osborne on the addition of Max to the package. “So, we got two horses and one dog in the deal.”

The Osbornes welcome Unreachable Star home and so far, the horse isn’t aware that his yearly routine is changing. He generally gets the winter months off and gets turned out at Deerfield Farm. His vacation just started a little early this year.

The “rehab facility” here at the farm has finally closed. Last month you all read about how Duke was injured and had to spend (way too much) time in the house. The poor guy was pitiful with his belly wrap and head cone.

Thank God he finally got the “OK” from the vet to have that disgraceful cone removed and his tubes and stitches taken out. He was one happy dog to have his freedom back again.

I think the lady of the house was just as happy as Duke when he finally got to go back outside to live. I have to give her credit, she was a trooper when it came to “dog doctoring.” She was way more patient than I would have been.

I’ll bet I watched her change that belly wrap at least three times a day for a month. (Duke couldn’t go outside and take care of his “business” with the belly wrap covering his equipment, if you get my drift, being a boy and all.)

I do have to admit that he was a very good patient. He would stand perfectly still while the belly wrap was being removed and then replaced. I think he knew he was lucky to be alive and have

peop le that cared enough to treat his injury. I don’t want to think about what the alternative could have been. His injury was pretty bad, I wasn’t sure if he was coming back home when he left that night. I’m actually glad the old fella is still around.

Now that Duke is back outside, Freckles and Chuck seem to be happier too. Chuck has decided that he likes roosting right outside the kitchen door better than in the barn. Now every morning (and any other time he gets the urge) Chuck wakes up the entire house with his “cock-a-doodle-doo.” Just my luck. Not much sleeping in around here. I wonder if they make muzzles for roosters....
