The grace and peace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, be with you.

This week our bulletin has an important insertion – Fiscal 2015-2016 Financial Report. It is important that parish administration thank people who contribute generously to the mission and ministry of St. Catherine of Siena – St. Lucy Parish: A generosity that includes prayer, service and financial support. Words can never be enough in thanking generous souls.

Yet, the report is also important because it is a ‘tool’ to aid leadership in making key decisions. It is not a document to appease the archdiocese or ourselves but a working synthesis to guide us to sustainability. It is not a ‘maintenance’ driven listing of numbers but a living guide to aid planning and ministering better, more economically and efficiently. The numbers show the continuing trend of a rapidly declining Catholic (worshipping) presence in this part of town. But let us be joyful that Christ is being proclaimed even if it is to a dwindling number of souls. However, let us all accept the mission and invite someone to (re)join the community. We can double our prayerful presence in one week if each of us invites one person.

My little reminder: Sunday worship leads us to becoming active in faith on Monday morning and beyond. Let’s make Sunday an event that gathers families and triggers our Christian sensibilities. Let’s not ask why folks in the area are not in church – let’s all simply invite. Let’s remember that we are all obligated to be an evangelizer who lives in Christian joy!

Life Everlasting

The second book of Maccabees tells a powerful story, and a rather gruesome one at that. But central to it, beyond the horrible deaths inflicted upon the brothers and their mother, is their be-lief in the promise of resurrection and life everlasting in God.

Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for him as he spreads Christ’s mes-sage of love, so that he might be de-livered from other nonbelievers anx-ious to do him harm. The apostle is confident in such prayer, just as he is confident in the everlasting support of Jesus and God the Father.

And there’s that “everlasting” word again. The Sadducees, not buying the idea, ask Jesus an interesting—albeit meaningless—question about the sta-tus of married life at the Resurrection. He tells the non-believers that mar-riage isn’t an issue for the risen chil-dren of God. More importantly, he assures them that their ancestors do live on in God, even as evidenced by the Father’s words to Moses.

November 13, 2016— 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Malachi 3:19-20 The book of Malachi was written af-ter the Jews returned from exile in Babylon. Faced with problems on all sides, many in the community doubt-ed whether God would ever again act on their behalf. In this passage, Mala-chi responds to these skeptics.

Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 3:7-12 The second letter to the Thessaloni-ans addresses concerns early Chris-tians had about the coming of Christ in glory. Some were excessively in-terested in the day and hour of Christ’s coming. Others thought that his imminent coming was an invita-tion to idleness.

Update on Father George It has been a great week for me. This past weekend I had closing masses for two high schools; I also visited a former classmate and I was warmly welcomed by him. I assisted with the celebration of two masses and we shared wonderful memories. It is so nice to interact with the peo-ple I grew up with. I want to take this chance to wish you a good month of November especially when we remember all the Saints and all of Our Faithful Departed. God bless you.

Music Dept. News

We have two choirs to choose from. The Praise Choir, directed by Julius White, sings contemporary Gospel music twice a month at the Saturday 5:00 pm mass. They also sing Christ-mas morning. They rehearse on Tues-days from 7:30-9:00 pm.

The Celebration Choir, directed by Gail Rohmann, sings a wide variety of styles from Renaissance to Spiritu-als to Contemporary music. They sing two times a month at the 10:30 am mass as well as at the Easter Triduum and on Christmas Eve. They rehearse on Wednesdays from 7:30-9:00 pm.

We are also in need of cantors. Can-tors must be able to sing solo and lead the congregation in song, so some experience is necessary. They re-hearse once a month but extra re-hearsal time is available if needed. Individual preparation is an important part of the ministry of the cantor.

We would also love to have more in-strumentalists to play preludes at mass. Perhaps you are a clarinetist or violinist or pianist and would like to play. Rehearsal time is available as needed.

So think about it, pray about it, talk to Julius or Gail and come join the joy-ous community of music leaders here at St. Catherine-St. Lucy Parish.

register, contact the Rectory, leave your name and number and someone will call you. It is never too late.

Little known facts about the Catholic Church in Las Vegas:

There are more churches in Las Ve-gas than casinos. During Sunday ser-vices at the Offertory some worship-pers contribute casino chips as op-posed to cash. Some are sharing their winnings – some are hoping to win. Since they get chips from so many different casinos, and they are worth money, the Catholic churches are re-quired to send all the chips into the diocese for sorting. Once sorted into the respective casino chips, one jun-ior priest takes the chips and makes the rounds to the casinos turning chips into cash. And he, of course, is known as The Chip Monk.

Patrice had helped at our Health Fair, Donuts, was guest of the parish at one of our Fashion Shows and was known for her Praise Dance. A Memorial Service was held at Maypole Avenue Church of Christ. Please keep Patrice and her family in your prayers.
