SIXTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME PAGE 1 JULY 22, 2018 Thoughts from Fr. Scott The last few weeks have been busy around here and a number of folks have let me know they too are dealing with many things. It is altogether too easy to let life control us and lead us far away from our intended desires. Life does have a way of getting in the way of our daily routines. Still, I hope we are all gaining some “down time” this summer. It is important to recharge our batteries as families in particular. We need to take charge and relax in order to stay sane. Please use the summer months as an opportunity to be with family and friends. I would think here in the land of the lakes this would be a welcome idea. Do not forget to be with Jesus daily in prayer and you will be amazed at how refreshed you can become as a family. Praying daily makes all the difference. Last week we, the priests of the Archdiocese, gathered for a relaxing social at St. Hugo of the Hills. Every year the parish priests there invite us for a mid-summer night of fraternal support. It was good to see our brother priests and converse with them about many different things. It was a good night to share stories and renew old friendships. Please pray for us. Spiritually, emotionally and physically we have been trying to keep our heads above water. Some have been more successful than others. None-the-less, we all need your support and prayers. So, if you remember, please offer a prayer for all priests this week. The proclamation of our readings has two very important and necessary messages for us. The first is proper shepherding and the second is the necessity to rest and remain in God after completing our goals as set forth by Him. A stern warning is given to all shepherds in the first reading. Note well: your pastor carefully heeds this warning. I am constantly reminded in prayer, and from my friends, that being a caring and compassionate shepherd is most important. I do my best to accomplish this way of being on a daily basis but am painfully aware that I do not always measure up. Still, I promise to do my prayerful best to guide us along the way of salvation. As many a great priest has proclaimed and I echo: I am here to save souls and love God! With respect to our second theme, we all need to rest in Christ more diligently. Too many of us fail to pray and be with Christ in a substantial manner at any point in our lives. In Christ all things are possible and we are connected in a way unlike any other. Without Him we can do nothing and all will be hollow. This manner of being requires us to be rested and ready to live for Him. Many of us believe we can live our lives without recharging or resting. This line of thought is contrary to the example set by Christ in our Gospel today. We all need to rest in Christ and be with Him at all times. So, let us heed His recommendation and use our summer months to rest in Christ. It has been a joy getting to know Fr. Christopher and our being in the same house has been a seamless transition. We have been dealing with car trouble, both of us, over the last few weeks. This has made getting around a bit difficult. Still, his transition to our community is going well and I thank everyone for being so welcoming. Fr. Christopher is not the only new staff member making a move to Lakes this year. Mrs. Kenny has been around daily and things are starting to take shape at the school as well. Add to all of this our continued program planning for faith formation, RCIA and our Christian service and it makes for busy days planning and preparing. Please pray for the entire staff at Lakes. We are all here to serve you and your families. Our time this summer is an opportunity for us to prepare to serve while offering everything to the Father through Jesus and Mary. This is all to say, I am looking forward to a great year of ministry ahead. God Bless and have a great week! Fr. Scott Thought for the week: Following the model of the one true Shepherd of Souls keeps all of us on a holy path!

Thoughts from Fr. Scott The last few weeks have been busy around here and a number of folks have let me know they

too are dealing with many things. It is altogether too easy to let life control us and lead us far away from our intended desires. Life does have a way of getting in the way of our daily routines. Still, I

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION

OF ADULTS (R.C.I.A.)

CLASSES NOW FORMING

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process in

which those seeking to grow in an understanding of the

Roman Catholic faith come together to explore Catholic

beliefs. This process is designed for adults who are thinking

of becoming Catholic, for those who know that they want to

become Catholic as well as for those who have been

baptized, but have not yet completed their Sacraments of

Initiation (Eucharist and/or Confirmation).

The program of Christian initiation begins in the fall and

continues through the end of the Easter season. People

who take part in R.C.I.A. meet weekly. Here is an

atmosphere of welcome, prayer, education and fellowship.

In no way does the R.C.I.A. process exert pressure on

those who participate but instead allows for the opportunity

to contemplate this important decision while learning the

teachings of the Church.

Adults, who wish to be baptized, or complete the

Sacraments of Initiation, are solemnly welcomed into the

Church or into full communion at the Great Vigil of Easter.

For more information about R.C.I.A. please contact the

Religious Education Center at 248-623-0291.

FAITH FORMATION

DIVINE MERCY

Write this: before I come as the just Judge,

I am coming first as The King of Mercy.

Before the day of justice arrives, there will be

given to people a sign in the heavens of this

sort: All light in the heavens will be

extinguished and there will be great darkness over the

whole earth. Then the sign of the cross will be seen in the

sky, and from the openings where the hands and the feet of

the Savior were nailed will come forth great lights which will

light up the earth for a period of time. This will take place

shortly before the last day. (Diary 83)

There will be a gathering of the Eucharistic Apostles of

the Divine Mercy on Tuesday, July 24th in the church

beginning at 7:00pm. All are welcome to join us.

HOST FAMILIES WANTED!

Dear Laker Families,

As Our Lady of the Lakes continues with our

international student program, we are looking for high

school host families for the 2018/2019 school year.

Each host family receives a monthly stipend while

students pay tuition and ALL personal expenses.

All students return home for our summer break. This

is a great way to share cultures while affording

international students an education at Our Lady of the

Lakes.

This opportunity not only helps you but also helps

diversify the cultural base of our school, giving our

students a broader perspective of life in other cultures.

Please consider this great opportunity and feel

free to contact me with all your questions and

concerns.

GIFT CARD PROGRAM Free money for our school!

Store gift cards can be purchased through the Tuition Reduction Incentive Program (T.R.I.P.) and be used instead of cash or credit at the stores and restaurants you normally frequent. Hundreds of different grocery, gas, retail, restaurant, mail-order and other stores participate in T.R.I.P. You receive dollar-for-dollar gift certificates to use at your favorite places and each store donates a percentage of the total purchase to OLL.

PARISH FAMILIES

Anyone can purchase gift cards without registering in the program. If you would like to purchase cards but are not interested in the tuition rebate, 100% of the rebate will be credited to the schools. Stop by the Parish Center to purchase cards and let the receptionist know you don’t wish to be enrolled. Purchase any available cards in the box.

SCHOOL FAMILIES

Half of the percentage is given to the school and the other half is applied directly toward your tuition bill!

The T.R.I.P. year runs from May 1 through April 30, allowing families to receive their tuition credit before the first payment of the next school year is due.

WAYS TO ORDER AND

EARN TRIP CREDIT

A large number of retailers are available on our order form but we can’t list them all due to space limitations. Go

to www.shopwithscrip.com for a full list of retailers available. You can order any gift card from that list even if it isn’t on our order form. Order forms are also available at the school reception desk and Parish Center or online at

ollonline.org under the Current Families tab.

HOW TO SIGN UP

You can complete the registration form that comes in the packet at the beginning of the school year. You can also get additional forms at the school office anytime throughout the year for yourself or for your friends and family. Anyone can order gift cards through T.R.I.P. and indicate on the order form which family is to receive the credit for the sale. Encourage family and friends to order through T.R.I.P. to increase the credit towards your tuition bill.

For questions or concerns, please email:

[email protected]

This program is also available to parishioners. The credit you earn will be donated to the school.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

JUNE UPDATE

During the month of June, Our Lady of the Lakes St. Vincent de Paul made deposits totaling $3,300.62 and wrote checks to help families in the amount of $4,267.47. We made 5 home visits, had 10 interviews in the Parish Center, made over 50 phone calls and spent 60 hours helping those in need. Our St. Vincent de Paul meets the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00am in the Parish Center. Members attend meetings, and take turns answering the calls from the SVdP phone line. Each case is different. We return calls and assess each case individually. We are asked for help with food, gas, utilities and rent most often. It is common that families are living paycheck to paycheck and if they have an illness or unexpected expense then they cannot pay rent or utilities. We are always looking for new members!! Thank you for generously contributing to Our Lady of the Lakes St. Vincent de Paul. We are able to help because we have your support.

REST IN PEACE

NATIONAL COLLECTIONS

Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal fund the Archdiocese of Detroit’s contribution to six national collections of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops each year.

The bishops in the United States created national collections so dioceses could combine resources and more effectively carry out our mission as Catholics. Each collection represents our community of faith at work in our country and around the world.

CSA gifts are given to the collections for the Catholic University of America, Catholic Communication Campaign, Holy Land, Church in Latin America, Catholic Home Missions, and Black and Indian Missions.

For information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to aod.org.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Scripture readings present the theme of the Good Shepherd. The prophet Jeremiah warns those shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock that their evil deeds will not go unpunished. He prophesies about Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who God will lift up as a righteous shoot from David’s line. St. Paul reminds us how, through Christ, we are brought together in Him. In St. Mark’s Gospel, Jesus shows compassion by taking pity on the crowd, the lost sheep, and begins to instruct them. How can we seek a deeper relationship with Christ, the Good Shepherd? Do we, in the spirit of evangelization, encourage with love our brothers and sisters who have left the faith to reopen their hearts to Jesus — to allow Him personally into their lives? Begin by asking them to attend Alpha or another evangelization series at your parish.

RIGHT TO LIFE-LIFESPAN

PP CLOSES CLINIC

It is perhaps a small victory but proof that the efforts of pro-life people are having a decided impact on the abortion industry when it was announced by Operation Rescue that the Midtown Heath Center Planned Parenthood in Kansas City, Missouri, which began offering abortion drugs last September, has now halted abortions due to an inability to locate an abortionist for that facility. There is no anticipated date when abortions might resume. Prayer and hard work are protecting babies and their moms in Kansas City. For more information, please call the LIFESPAN office, 248-816-1546.

John Cardinal Dearden

on the

30th Anniversary of his Death

Wednesday, August 1, 2018 from 7-9pm

St. Theresa of Lisieux Parish

48115 Schoenherr (north of 21 Mile Rd),

Shelby Twp.

As shepherd of Detroit, he loved and guided us. As

teacher, he educated and engaged us to be informed

Catholics. As Council Father, he invited and inspired us to

grow a vibrant Vatican II church. As host of the first national

Call to Action in 1976, he welcomed and listened to the

People of God on behalf of the U.S. Bishops which he led

as president from 1966 to 1971. We will come together to

thank God for his wisdom, vision, courage, integrity,

leadership and love and to celebrate our beloved

community of faith.
