THOUGHTS FROM FR. SCOTT...2021/01/24  · infirm, lonely and elderly. The winter months provide us...

9
THOUGHTS FROM FR. SCOTT January is usually a time to catch our breath after the holidays. This year it has been anything but an opportunity for quiet. Lent will be here before we know it and the weather has been cold. People seem a bit on edge and we could all use a moment to collect our thoughts. A spiritual deep breath is in order. Still, we must press on knowing that the work we do for the Lord is our focus and our joy. To this end we, at the office, are always planning and praying for blessings from our God and for the strength serve joyfully. Rest assured we are here to announce the Mercy of God and our joy at following Him with humble hearts. Visiting the sick and lonely is a work of mercy and pleasing to the Lord our God. January is a time when things begin to get lonely for some people and illnesses tend to become more pronounced for some reason. All of us know people that are elderly or physically not well. Perhaps we can remember some people who need a visit or to hear a friendly voice on the phone just to say we are thinking of them. These moments of grace are beneficial to those who are remembered and to those doing the visiting or calling. Our Lord implores us to remember the infirm, lonely and elderly. The winter months provide us with an opportunity to act on this invitation from Him. Yes, we are all very busy, but taking the time to visit the elderly, ill or lonely is part of our Christian calling especially in these days of social isolation beyond any we have ever experienced. So, please make some time for those who need to hear a friendly voice and do not hear it often enough. This week we hear about the call of the first disciples by the Lord. They are exhorted to follow Him unreservedly and with great hope. This invitation by Jesus is fundamental and telling at the same time. Many people need to be “invited” to live extraordinary lives. Stepping out of the norm and following the movement of the Spirit is often times difficult. We, the people of God, need to invite everyone to follow their vocation in Christ and particularly to invite young men to follow a vocation to the priesthood. Inviting men to follow a call to the priesthood is vital in our world today and yet rarely done. I challenge everyone to make such an invitation to a young man; that is to invite him to become a priest. Many young men around us have a vocation to follow Christ as a priest but simply need a “nudge” in the right direction. Your invitation and support might be what is needed to motivate his call to service in the priesthood. Jesus invited the first apostles to follow Him and know greatness. We, the people of God, need to be the “voice of Christ” in our world today by inviting many men to consider a vocation to the priesthood for the Church and salvation of souls. If we will not support these vocations and invite men to live this great life then who will? Our prayers are great but our verbal support and gentle invitation is even greater! Jesus calls the first apostles to come after Him so He can make them fishers of men. We could use a few more young men who will leave everything and follow Jesus Christ by serving in the priesthood! God Bless and have a great week! Fr. Scott

A PRAYER FOR LIFE Father and maker of all, you adorn all creation with splendor and beauty, and fashion human lives in your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands, and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of life. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS

“Follow me and I will make you fishers of men. ”

- Mark 1:17

Forgiving Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is a call to all Christians! The call is in the here and now, in our present circumstances, not when we think we are “ready” or have everything in order. Good stewardship of our God-given gifts means that things aren’t always going to go according to our schedule and that God has a much better plan in store for each of us.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS

FAMILY CONNECTION Today’s Gospel describes how Jesus called His first disciples and the immediacy with which these men dropped everything to follow Him. We can only begin to imagine what Jesus’ presence must have been like to invoke such a response in these first disciples. While a few of us might relate to such a radical conversion, many of us would find such a sudden change in ourselves or in another person unsettling. There are few things for which we would willingly drop everything. And yet this is the immediacy with which these first disciples responded to Jesus. These first disciples were willing to drop everything in order to make Jesus and the Kingdom of God the most important things in their lives.

Gather as a family and talk about circumstances in which you have had to “drop everything.” (the call to pick up a sick child from school, the cry of a hurt or angry child) How did you feel about having to change your plans in each of these situations? How do we feel when someone asks us to drop everything to help him or her? For many of us, it is not easy to drop everything to respond to the needs of another.

Invite your family to imagine what Jesus’ presence and invitation to these first followers must have been like that they responded by leaving their livelihood to become His disciples. How might our life change if we understood the Kingdom of God to be as important and immediate in our lives? Ask

God to help you experience the Kingdom of God with such immediacy. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.

Just as the first were called to be fishers of men, so are we. We are also called to drop everything and follow Him. I’ve been in the schools during reading month and the have “drop everything and read” times throughout the school day. I remember one day hearing the announcement over the PA to “drop” (which meant the teachers had to stop whatever the lesson is and everyone picked up a book and began to read) and I thought, that is what I need, I need at various times throughout the day to be told to “drop” but instead of grabbing a book, I’d drop in prayer. I’d drop and follow Christ by spending time praying and listening to Him. How do you “drop” everything for the Lord? How do you follow Him in the convenient times and the inconvenient times? If we are doing that, and others see us, then we become fishers of men. Others will see what we are doing and how it gives us up and joy and they will want that too. So today I urge you to drop what you are doing throughout the day and spend time following Him through prayer.

Peace and prayers,

Jean, DRE

ST. PAULA

Feast Day – January 26

347-404 The patron saint of widows, Paula was a wealthy Roman widowed with five children at age 32. Another widow introduced her to St. Jerome, a priest and papal secretary to St. Damasus. Jerome became her spiritual director, urging a life of asceticism and charity. When he learned she was fluent in Greek, he enlisted her help in translating Greek biblical texts for his new Latin version of the Bible. Paula had joined the circle of nobility-born Roman women in Jerome’s orbit, and followed him to the Holy Land when he left Rome. She taught herself Hebrew, and exhausted her wealth building a monastery, three convents and a hospital in Bethlehem.
