What is Performance Psychology?
• …refers to “excellent” performance within a field where excellence counts (Hays, 2006)
• Performance often occurs in front of others (e.g. audience)
• Performers must meet certain performance standards…are judged to a certain proficiency/standard…there are consequences to poor performance…and, good coping skills are intrinsic to excellent performance (Hays and Brown, 2004)
• …talents/skills must be delivered at a specific point in time
![Page 6: Thought for the day… - ArbiterSports](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042818/62693b6947dfdb124e584963/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
An Underlying Model for Change:

“Change”…is hard
Enhancing performance often requires “change”…
*Change in one’s Beliefs/Attitudes
*Change in one’s Behaviors/Actions
*Maintaining a “Commitment” to change
*Understanding “how” one changes…
This also impacts how we better understand
“change” in others behaviors

What is Mental “Toughness”?
![Page 12: Thought for the day… - ArbiterSports](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042818/62693b6947dfdb124e584963/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Defining “Mental Toughness”
Mental toughness is having the natural or
developed psychological edge that enables you to:
*Generally, cope better than your opponents with
the many demands (games, training, lifestyle) that
sport places on a performer
*Specifically, be more consistent and better than
your opponents in remaining determined, focused,
confident, and in control under pressure
(Jones, et al, 2002)
![Page 13: Thought for the day… - ArbiterSports](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042818/62693b6947dfdb124e584963/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Attributes of Mental Toughness (Jones, et al, 2002)
• Self-belief
*belief in ability to achieve goals
*belief you are different to opponents
• Motivation (desire/determination)
• Intrinsic motivation and using adversity as a source of
determination
• Accepts competition anxiety, but has plan on how to
deal with it
• Can maintain focus…ability to “balance”
• Maintains technique/effort in face of fatigue/pain
![Page 14: Thought for the day… - ArbiterSports](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042818/62693b6947dfdb124e584963/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Why Mental Training?
• How much of officiating performance (0-100%)
is “mental”? (Confidence, Composure, Focus)
• Of all the mistakes/errors in your officiating
performance, what % of them are “mental”
mistakes?
• Of all your training and preparation as a sports
official, what % do you spend doing “mental
training”?
![Page 15: Thought for the day… - ArbiterSports](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042818/62693b6947dfdb124e584963/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The Mental “Game” for Officials
• Sport knowledge (rules; tactics; sport-specific)
• Physical fitness and conditioning
• “Balance” with Work and Family
• Travel
• Income (or lack thereof)
• Environmental factors (audience effect, managing
emotional coaches and athletes, and dealing with
climate factors)
• Continuing education and skill acquisition
![Page 16: Thought for the day… - ArbiterSports](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042818/62693b6947dfdb124e584963/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
The Mental “Game” for Officials
• Managing “conflict” and resolution
• Managing internal emotions and creating a calm and
composed officiating mindset
• Focusing on the “right things at the right time”
• Communication skills and creating an “objective”
environment within a subjective domain
• Working as an umpire “crew” (team performance)
• Others?
![Page 17: Thought for the day… - ArbiterSports](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042818/62693b6947dfdb124e584963/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Managing Conflict
• “Prepare” to be composed as an umpire
• Early communication…including recommendations
“how” to communicate disagreement (coaches)
• Deep breath…composed “cue word” before interaction
• Simple….concrete….”solution-focused”
• Execute the boundaries previously established…when
line is “crossed”, execute decision (e.g. ejection)
• After conflict…breath, re-center, re-focus
• Use of “positive” (controlled” cues
![Page 18: Thought for the day… - ArbiterSports](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042818/62693b6947dfdb124e584963/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Mental Training “Basics”
• Goal Setting Skills -Focus on Process…not Outcome -”SCRAM” -Everyday application
• Composure Skills -Relaxation training (10-15 mins/day)
• Concentration/Focus Skills -Imagery training -Visualizing “success” w/controllables
![Page 19: Thought for the day… - ArbiterSports](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042818/62693b6947dfdb124e584963/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Mental Training “Basics”
• Develop your own “mental routine” that creates a
connection with your “optimal performance”
-What is my “optimal” performance?
-How do I prepare for this?
-Consistency in routine generates enhanced
confidence
-”Focus” provides clarity; decreases “pressure”
GOAL: Enhanced Confidence/Composure/Concentration
![Page 20: Thought for the day… - ArbiterSports](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042818/62693b6947dfdb124e584963/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Achieving “Flow” (Csikzentmihalyi, 1990)
• Having Goals
• Being immersed in the
activity
• Paying attention to
what is relevant
• Enjoying the activity
(emotional and
cognitive)
