Welcome from Thorson Herefords!is has been a year of change for us. We have a new sale
date, February 12, 2013. We also have changed to selling only
two-year-old bulls. ere are numerous reasons for this, butwe needed to either calve earlier or sell 2s, and getting readyfor a bull sale when you are a one-man crew in the middle ofcalving can mean having to choose between the now and thefuture.
A few notes for you before you (hopefully) dissect thecatalog. Even though it seems like only awhile ago, I have been
raising bulls for seven years. I was the volume buyer at theShield Bar dispersal sale in February of 2005. I bought 46head of bred cows and added 11 heifer calves fromCarmichaels that same year. I also added 10 heifer calves andtwo bred cows from Gordon Jamison in 2011. I now have over90 bred registered cows. I believe in culling and have done it
relentlessly to make sure my cows are the type to help acommercial man survive in todays world of bigger places andless labor.
ere are both registered and commercial bulls in this sale.e commercial bulls go back to my dads cow herd good, honest Hereford cows that paid the way for him to raise sixkids. I cant tell you the pedigree for 10 generations, but I can
tell you they are functional and efficient and have been culledhard for any problems for nearly 20 years by me.
ese bulls have spent their whole lives within seven milesof my house. ey were born here and fed here. at last partis why they arent feedlot fat. ey are in good condition to goto work and last a long time. ey are brought along slow asyearlings and as 2s they arent pushed, only fed to reach their
potential. I have worked for longevity. ere is a bull in thissale out of a cow that raised him at 11 and is still winteringhere. She will be 13 this spring. I used JC L1 Domino 4013 atseven and he is still as active and moves as well as a three-year-old. L1 Domino 99496 was still being used in the pastureat eight years old.
I have always felt that any ranch is only as profitable as itscow herd. Every bull I have ever bought was with the eyetoward what sort of females he would leave. Every cow isscored on her udder from 1 (poor) to 9 (perfect). From that, Iincorporate as many other traits as possible without losingsight of the goal of top females. Every bull in the sale wasplanned to be a heifer calf of the best quality his mother could
produce. When they come out bulls, then I sort through themand sell only the ones I would be willing to use on commercialcows that had to pay my bills.
Lastly, I would invite you to buy with confidence. I livehere and have no plans on leaving or quitting the business. Allbulls are fully guaranteed through the first breeding season. Ican winter them for you, if you need me to, and will deliver
the first 100 miles free. If you want to bring your trailer andtake them home, I will give you $100 cash for each bull youbuy.
ank you very much for yourinterest and I hope to see youFebruary 12th.

2021 may have started showing some age, but she was my favorite cowfrom Shield Bar. Perfect udder, even as she aged and moderate in size. If
you keep heifers, take a look at this sleeper pick.
I will never be able to pay Ken Coleman back for the ability to use thisbull. 99496 is the sire or grandsire of a large part of the greatest Line1cows today. When you pair him with Kens best cow (Dam ofDistinction), you get a bull that Ken had no intention of ever letting offhis Colorado ranch. His good luck of having more great bulls than hecould use right away was my great luck in being able to buy three yearsuse of this bull. He has tremendous depth and fleshing ability, but hisstructure is what is what really sets him apart. ere is no way to capturein a picture him walking across a pasture. Top that with performance. His calves averaged only 99% on birth, but were 103% at weaning and105% at yearling. His first daughters calved last spring and are
tremendous. Two of my top eight ratioing calves were from 847daughters. When I dropped him off for Ken to take him back to Colorado,my comment was, I think he is the best Line1 bull born in 2008. atwas at Gordon Jamisons sale and several breeders were looking at himand I heard no arguments.

Eye appeal deluxe bull that I kept from my 2006 crop. He is a masculine, heavily muscled bull with a great top and a tremendous hip. 6002 would haveto be in the conversation of the most eye-appealing bull I have ever seenand his daughters are just as good. I used this bull hard for four years andkept a son out of him. I was running out of cows to use him on, so I sold himin the spring of 2011. Last spring, I calved out 45 cows that were either sistersor daughters and their calves will make up the majority of sales for years tocome. His calves have the extra bone and depth of him while his daughtersretain the milking ability of his sire. He put a smile on my face every time Isaw him and I am sure his sons will do the same for you.

e son of 6002 I kept. is bull was a great breeding bull and a veryimpressive individual with a weaning ratio of 111 and a yearling ratioof 117, but I kept him because of his mother. For three straight years, hercalves ratioed over 105 for both weaning and yearling. She was moderateframed with thickness and depth that makes a top-notch cow and toppedthat off with a very good udder. I sold 6002 because I kept this bull andthen, unfortunately, 809 crippled himself before turnout in 2011, so theseare the only bulls I got, but I have daughters that will carry on hisinfluence.

936 is the second bull I bought from Ken Coleman. When I saw this bull, the onlyname I could think of was Yahtzee. ere are very few things this bull doesnt dowell. I have used him on both heifers and cows, deep and shallow, long and short, and his calves come out consistent at the top of any group you put him with. JimWilliams called this bulls grandmother the best cow in the Hereford breed andhis calves are just what you would expect from his genes.

Dont let the 81 pound BW fool you, this bull is for cows only, but when
sale day comes he will sire steer calves that make the scale beg for mercy.

Loads of pigment in an eye appealing package. If only the first calfborn out of every new bull was this good.

I like the pattern of this bull. Note the birth date when lookinghim over. He was bred to be an easy keeper.

Rich Smith leased this bull for heifers last year. If you want a sleep-all-night heifer bull, maybe this bull I sent to a 95-year-old manto use on his heifers would be a place to start. Trich tested andready to go.
