Principal’s Message — Ganton Gazette It’s 3 a.m. as I write part of this. For some reason I woke up at this terrible hour and decided that I couldn’t sleep. So naturally I picked up my phone and noticed that since I went to sleep around 11, I have received 2 school related emails and 1 text message.
So what should be the natural thing to do?
In a simpler time in my life it would have been to go back to sleep, but instead, here I am on my phone because I have the option too.
I think that this is the reality for our children now. At THS this year we have seen students coming in and complaining about being tired. Yes I know that some of our students have been helping with harvest and that could contribute, but, many of them talk about playing games, or receiving snapchats or text messages late at night. This is our reality. We are so plugged into our devices that we need to have days (like Family Day) where we are supposed to unplug from the world. Our children are not getting the recommended amounts of sleep because they have a device that can be connected at all times.
When you look at the recommended amount of sleep for students at THS is goes as follows:
Our grades 7-9 students should be getting 9-10 hours of sleep a night and our grades 10-12 students should be getting 8-10 hours of sleep. This is uninter-rupted sleep.
I often wonder how many of our students actually get this amount of sleep on a consistent basis. When you read research from Harvard Medical school to re-place your sleep debt of 10 hours in any given week it takes up to two weeks to get your body back to normal. When students are experiencing sleep debt their bodies overproduce hormones such as cortisol which can mess up metabolism and increase the likelihood of diabetes and obesity. A lack of the proper amount of sleep can also help to degrade the immune system and immune re-sponse in general. All of this can contribute to poorer performance in their clas-ses at school and their mental states outside of school.
After reading up on some of the research on sleep debt I have made the effort to leave my phone in a location that I can’t access it if I wake up at 3 a.m. I don’t have to worry about this type of behaviour from my children yet, but, when they are old enough to have cell phones or iPods I will be making the effort to make sure that they don’t fall into the same trap that I did and their devices will not be with them for those 3 a.m. wake ups.

November Report Cards and Interviews
Marks will be available on Powerschool November 7th and Parent Teacher interviews November 9th
Watch in late October for information to book Parent Teacher Conferences with your desired teachers online. We
piloted this program last year and have decided to continue using this application. If you have trouble accessing
this system, call into the office and have them book appointments for you. Teachers can also be emailed directly
as they can schedule appointments as well.
ELAA Career Fair
The ELAA Career Fair is taking place in the High School Gym from 7:00
pm-8:30 pm on Tuesday, October 18. ELAA is the recruiting liaison for
Alberta’s public post-secondary institutions, representing 28 universities,
colleges, and polytechnics. This career fair brings Alberta’s higher education
offerings to our school and we encourage all students and parents to attend,
gather resources and information and ask lots of questions.
ELAA events are directly applicable to the learner out-
comes in Alberta’s CALM curriculum, helping high school
learners to:
Develop strategies to transition from high school to higher educa-
tion
Investigate higher education and apprenticeship training pro-
grams; and
Inventory the skills and knowledge necessary to getting
employment
Students interested in participating in Work Experience or the RAP program should contact Mrs. Van Steenis

Physical Education Program
The PE program was having fun one day
last week. The kids were playing a clas-sic game with a bit of a twist. The stu-
dents got to play a game of Dodgeball, but the twist was that they had to be at-
tached to a partner by the ankle the en-tire time. Looked like a 3 legged race out
there!
The Grade 7’s were asked to get into groups
of 5 and make their way across the gym us-
ing only 4 feet. This was the end result.

We know our students have lives outside of school and we would love to hear about it!
Let us know about the accomplishments your child has. Did he get first in public
speaking at 4H? Will he be entering an archery contest? How is she doing in sports?
Did she win big at a cheerleading competition? How about those up and coming rodeo
stars? Cadets; when is your annual inspection? Tell us the details!! Email any details
