Mounting platter and belt is carried out with the dedicated jig supplied (Fig. 2.1) .

Put the metal stems oft the mounting jig into a position asshown in Fig. 2.1 . Put the platter upside down onto a levelsurface and stretch the rubber belt around the integratedsub-platter (Fig. 2.2) . Hook the stems of the mounting jiginto belt and carefully pull to the inner rim of the platter. Fixbelt and jig at the rim as shown in Fig. 2.3 .

Avoid any oil or greasy substance to get onto the beltand the transmission area of sub-platter and motor pul-ley. If necessary you may clean them with a lint-free tis-sue lightly soaked in an alcoholic dilution (e.g. ethanol).

Now turn platter back again and put it carefully onto thebearing axle. Position platter in a way that the area be-tween belt and inner platter rim as formed by the mounting

jig is to come exactly over the motor pulley (Fig. 2.4) . Theplatter has been correctly positioned if it can be moved tothe left or right by only a few degrees.

The stems of the mounting jig are now to be turned in-wards, one after the other (Fig. 3.1) , whereupon the belt

will be freed and loop itself around the motor pulley. Re-move the mounting jig as shown in Fig. 3.2 . Turn the plat-ter manually clock-wise several times in order to make surethat the belt ts snugly around sub-platter and pulley.

Place the dedicated rubber-polymer mat onto platter (Fig.3.3) . The two pieces are to compensate vinyl records ofdifferent thickness without having to alter tonearm height(VTA; see page 31 ).

If your TD 160 HD has been delivered without tonearmyou may now proceed to mount and align the tonearm ofyour choice according to the instructions supplied by itsmanufacturer. Otherwise the mounting of your TD 160 HDis complete and can now be set up and connected.

IMPORTANT: it is highly recommended to save the ship- ping box and all packing material in case your record player needs to be packed again for transportation. Thorens can- not be held responsible for any damage that may occurduring transport owing to the record player not been prop-erly packed

Place the record player onto a stable foundation and af-ter the nal position has been achieved make sure thatthe plinth is fairly level. For any ne-adjustments turn thetip of each foot up or down until the plinth is in a perfecthorizontal position. This procedure is best controlled (andto be corrected if necessary) with the help of the suppliedspirit level.

Take the RCA interconnect leads and plug them into thedesignated (phono) input jacks at the rear panel of yourampli er or receiver. Make sure that polarity (left/rightchannel!) is correct.

HINT: if your ampli er lacks an integrated phono stage you need to acquire a special external phono-preampli er. For ampli ers/receivers featuring a 5-pin DIN-socket at the phono input section you will need a special adaptor (RCAto DIN) which can be requested from your Thorens dealer.

While placing the record player onto its nal position makesure that it is a fair distance away from other audio devices(such as ampli er, receiver or CD player). This measureis to avoid electro-magnetic interferences which can yielda distorting effect in the sensitive pickup cartridge whichmay be audible as hum during playback.

Electro-magnetic interferences however can be dis-closed and eliminated by simply changing the positionof the record player with respect to the other audiocomponents.

Thorens record players are relatively insensitive when sub- ject to foot-fall shocks or airborne vibrations. Neverthe-less, a general problem remains when it comes to playingback vinyl records with a high-quality pickup cartridge. Itis therefore highly recommended to choose a sturdy pieceof furniture or a rack for placement whereby any closeproximity of the record player to the loudspeakers is to beavoided.

Under certain circumstances all these precautions may notbe good enough in older houses with wooden oor construction. Here, in most cases a solid shelf rmly mountedto a supporting wall can be very bene cial for the sonicproperties of the record player if it is placed on such a shelfor console.

    Mounting the Pickup Cartridge

You can now mount and adjust your pickup cartridge ac-cording to the instructions provided with the pickup. Pro-

ceed with making all necessary alignments.

In the following youll nd some comprehensive instruc -tions concerning the correct mounting of Thorens to-nearms, which may accordingly be used for mounting for-eign tonearms as well. However, if in doubt you should inany case resort to the original instructions provided by themanufacturer of the tonearm. Special hints concerning thecon guration of the Thorens tonearms TP 250 / TP 300are to be found on page 33/34 of this manual.

HINT: if you happen to have acquired this record player as a complete system, i.e. with tonearm and pickup, there are no adjustments necessary because everything has al- ready been carried out for you in the Thorens factory. Onlytracking force needs to be adjusted.

Mount the pickup cartridge to the slots in the tonearmsheadshell. While doing this initial work it is recommendedto leave if possible the stylus guard attached to thecartridge in order to avoid that the delicate stylus and can-tilever are damaged while mounting the cartridge.

Thorens tonearms will accept any pickup cartridge withstandard xing hole distance of 12.5 mm (1/2) .

Carefully and with the help of tweezers, the four colour-coded ne litz wires coming from the tonearms headshellare attached to the respective pins with identical colour atthe rear side of the cartridge.

    RGLG

For the time being do not tighten the headshell screws. One should be able to slide the cartridge smoothly backand forth along the headshell slots. Fine-adjusting and x -ing the cartridge is done after having determined the naltone arm height.

HINT: if pickups from Grado are going to be employed it is recommended to x the cartridge with the screws up -side down. This means that the screws are inserted fromunderneath through the cartridge holes and the headshellslots.

Carefully detach the stylus guard from pickup and put (anold) record onto the platter. After that lower the tonearmby the lift lever. The tonearm tube should then be parallelto the record (to be viewed from the side). If this is not thecase the so-called Vertical Tracking Angle (VTA) needs tobe adjusted by the tonearm height. However the specialclamp mechanism (Fig. 4) provided allows to individuallyadjust VTA according to the size of the mounted pickup.

This adjustment is made by loosening the screw of theclamp mechanism and carefully sliding the tonearm slight-ly up or down. If necessary repeat this procedure until thetonearm tube is fully parallel to the record. After the posi-tion for a correct VTA has been found, do not forget totighten the clamp screw again.

Adjustment of tracking force: see page 33/34 .

    Fig. 4

    Adjusting Tonearm Height

The counterweight is attached to the rear end of the to-nearm by some slight pressure and a clockwise rotationtowards the tonearms bearings (Fig. 4) .

ATTENTION: great care is necessary for the fol-lowing mounting and adjustment procedures, be-cause the slightest mistake may damage stylusand cantilever.

Only a painstakingly aligned pickup is able to compliment

the outstanding sonic capabilities and potential of thisrecord player. If you consider the alignment too dif cultto be carried out by yourself, do not hesitate to ask your

Thorens dealer for a helping hand.

ATTENTION: when aligning the cartridge greatcare is once again obligatory in order to avoidthat the delicate stylus or sensitive parts of thetonearm are being damaged. If you are a new-comer without any experience it is better to leavethis work to an expert who knows the speci ccharacteristics of most pickups and tonearms.

A badly aligned pickup will be well on the wayto yield bad sound and to damage your preciousrecords!

Azimut: is the angle between cantilever/stylus interfaceand record groove. It should be exactly 90 (excludingthose cartridges in which the cantilever has purposelybeen installed with a slight offset). Azimuth cannot be ad-

justed on the TP 250 / TP 300. It is therefore most im-portant that a pickup with precise azimuth is going to be

    Alignment of Pickup Cartridge

Offset: is the angle between the longitudinal axis of the

pickup and the tonearms longitudinal axis. In all pivotedtonearms (like the TP 250 / TP 300) the optimum valueis to be found between 21 and 24. Dedicated pickupalignment gauges required for this adjustment work areavailable from your Thorens dealer.

Overhang: is the distance between the stylus tip and thecentre of the platter spindle. For the TP 250 / TP 300 over-hang should be 17 mm. Special pickup alignment gaugesrequired for this adjustment are available from your Tho-rens dealer.

    Tonearm TP 250

Adjusting the tonearm lift: this has already been ad- justed in the factory and can be considered suitable fornearly all pickups in the market. However if the lift needsto be re-adjusted to t a very special cartridge, please donot hesitate to ask your Thorens dealer for help.

Anti-skating force (bias): this is adjusted by shifting thebutton on the tonearms lift bench (2). It is recommendedto set the anti-skating force slight below the value of thetracking force.

Adjustment of tracking force: make sure to inquire therecommended tracking force for your pickup from eitherthe cartridge manufacturer or by consulting the mount-ing instructions supplied with the pickup. Tracking force is

usually adjusted between 10 and 25 mN (correspondingto 1.0 and 2.5 grams). First lower the lift lever and movethe tonearm to a position in between its rest and the outerrim of the platter.

Then balance the tonearm by rotating the counterweight(clockwise or counter-clockwise) until equilibrium has beenachieved. HINT: anti-skating force (bias) must in any case

be set to 0. Now y ou can apply tracking force by rotatingthe counterweight (3) according to the following scheme:

a half turn of the counterweight corresponds to a track ing force of 10 mN (1.0 g) whereas a full turn correspondsto a force of 20 mN (2.0 g).

Turning the counter-weight towards the bearings will in-crease tracking force, whilst turning it into the oppositedirection will decrease tracking force. The green dot onthe counter-weight is to measure the turns.

Make sure the tonearm is kept in its armrest be-fore making these adjustments.

    Operation

    Fig. 6

The lever switch on the left next to the platter is the speed selector . There are two speeds available: 33 rpm for long-playing records and 45 rpm for singles. If the lever is inmiddle position (as shown in Fig. 6 ), the record player isswitched off.

For playing a record the turntable is rst started with thedesired speed. Then lift the tonearm by slowly pushing thelift lever up. Release the tonearm from its rest and positionit above the lead-in groove or above the desired piece/ track to be played. Slowly bring the lift lever into the down-position whereupon the tonearm is smoothly descendingonto the record.

ATTENTION: please do not attempt to acceleratethe descending movement of the tonearm by ap-plying force with your nger tip, because this willinevitably damage both stylus and record.

    35

This record player does not feature an automatic end-of-record shut-off facility. Therefore, as soon as the stylus hasreached the lead-out groove, the tonearm is to be lifted upmanually by the lever and the motor switched off.

    Maintenance and Care

Your record player needs no particular maintenance.

From time to time however you may add ve to eight dropsof the bearing oil in order to enhance lubrication (see also

    page 25) .

If over the time dust has collected on the plinth or dustcover you can wipe it off with a soft, moistened cloth.HINT: a moistened cleaning tissue for glasses will do a

    good job here.

Refrain from using a dry cloth for cleaning be-cause this will in any case generate undesiredelectrostatic charges.

The Thorens precision belt should be exchanged at leastevery other year. If the record player is not in use for alonger time, it is advisable to remove the belt in order toprevent a premature ageing under tension.
