Celebrating over 80 years in business

The Callan Family were Dairy Farmers at the turn of the 1900’s. It was after the 1914 -18 War that Callan’s founder Thomas Callan turned his back on farming and started his apprenticeship with Dewar’s Auctioneers in Ayr’s Kyle Street. It was when Dewar’s went into liquidation in 1933 that Tom decided to set up his own business and opened his own Auction Hall in Ayr’s High Street.

Thomas R. Callan’s First Auction was held on 17th November 1933 and the total takings amounted to £22/5s/9d.

During the Second World War, Thomas Callan served in the Navy on demob in 1946 he expanded Callan’s and purchased his first removal van. Ten years later his son, David Callan joined the business and in 1971 David took over upon the death of his father.

With the redevelopment of Ayr’s High Street in the 1980’s, the business moved to its current address at Smith Street in Ayr. In 1998 Michael Callan, one of David’s four sons became a partner and is the third generation of the family to join the business.

David Callan retired in 2003 and in 2011 the family partnership transferred to a Limited Company. Michael Callan is currently Managing Director.

AuctionsToday the Limited Company continues to conduct weekly auctions of general household furnishings and quarterly sales of Fine Art and Antiques. The Quarterly sales are reproduced in full colour catalogues and are posted on line. In 2010 Callan’s conducted their first live auction on the internet, allowing customers to bid live from the comfort of their own home anywhere in the world. The utilisation of the internet has transformed Callan’s from a local Scottish Saleroom into a successful UK Auction House with a growing international clientele.

Removal and StorageCallan’s also manage a thriving Removal and Storage business and conduct domestic and commercial removals throughout the UK.For more information visit our new dedicated removal web site www.callanremovals.co.uk

4 A fine Royal Worcester ewer by Harry Davis, dated 1905, in Renaissance style, the intricate scrolled handle and moulded borders in blush ivory and tones of gold, the body painted with a continuous winter scene including a flock of sheep illuminated by pale yellow moonlight, the snowy landscape contrasting with the dark night sky, signed H. Davis, 40.3cm high, puce mark, shape number 1309. £8000-£12000

FOOTNOTESIn the early years of the 20th Century Harry Davis painted a small number of snow scenes, based partly on sketches he made on Kempsey Common near Worcester, and partly insired by the paintings of Joseph Farquharson.

This ewer comes with an interesting letter from specialist John Sandon and includes a discussion with his father, renowned Worcester expert Henry Sandon. The letter refers to the ewer and the remarkable work of artist Harry Davis.

“I have only ever seen one other vase painted by Harry Davis in the same manner as your ewer.” “These vases are very individual things, literally unique.” “I am sure you will not find another ewer like this piece anywhere.” “This must be the largest piece that Harry Davis ever painted with a winter scene.”

Henri Fantin-Latour was born in Grenoble, France. He started drawing at an early age, taught and encourage by his father, himself a portrait painter. He did extensive studies followed by a visit to London where in 1864 he exhibited at the Royal Academy. Whistler brought attention to Fantin-Latour and his flower studies became especially popular being done in the realistic manner of the Old Masters. Flower paintings of roses, dahlias, begonias and delphiniums being amongst his favourites. This painting depicts a bouquet of dahlias, silhouetted against a dark neutral background. This subject matter is characteristic of Fantin-Latour’s output. Although Fantin played with the contrast between light and shade, he also focused his attention on the rich combination of similar textures and tone. These effects of light and colour are characteristic of naturalism which evolved in French art in the second half of the 19th century. Sixty public collections worldwide hold works by the artist who died aged 68 in Bure - Normandy.
