The Barnes Group consists of three construction-orientated companies formed by the Chairman, Brian Barnes. Initially established as a joinery firm in 1975, the business has gradually grown and has been trading as a main contractor since 1994, with joinery / fast-track fit-outs being a specialist division.

Barnes was appointed in 2007 on a design and build basis following a design competition with Taylor Young, DSSR and Giffords to create an exemplar building that addressed sustainability as its top priority.
The £7.1 million HQ represents the largest capital investment in the police authority’s history and unites offices that have been spread across the district.
The new premises are now the base for senior management teams, C.I.D, Carlisle city Policing Unit and Civilian Support along with various operational support unity for the Road Policing Unit and Tactical Units.

Originally built in 1969 County South was opened by HM the Queen. The five-storey building was refurbished and upgraded internally in three phases over a 63-week contract with the named departments being decanted during the work.
In addition to the re-development of Grizedale Social Space, County South was the second project Thomas Barnes had secured at Lancaster University.
External works carried out during the summer holidays included attenuation systems and refurbishment to the central courtyard.
Two storey extension

The project was constructed by way of a steel frame structure on pile and ground beam foundations, brick/block cavity external walls and metal profile curved and flat roofs on metal purlins.
New lift and precast concrete stairs have been installed, along with all M&E services and alterations and re-planning to the existing building to form new rooms and openings.

Barnes has been appointed on a design and build basis to extend Freehold Primary School in Oldham, as well as re-modelling the existing premises to increase pupil capacity from 286 to approximately 400 students.
The project will be completed over four phases, with phase one being the construction of a new multi-use games area (MUGA). The subsequent phases involve a 2-storey extension that will host 8 new classrooms, ICT suite, library, offices, staff room, facilities room and toilets.
Ashton-on-Mersey School is a large secondary modern school in Sale, Cheshire, with almost 1,300 boys and girls aged 11 to 16 on roll. It became a specialist sports college in 1998, which Ofsted states: 'results in high levels of participation and high standards of attainment in curricular and extra-curricular sport.'
The school's main objective was to increase the number of key stage 4 pupils taking vocational courses and to improve their attitudes to learning.

The contract comprised of 1100m² IT and Airwaves control room linked to the existing building. The project was delivered in 2 phases, the first being a 19 week programme to complete the ground floor with the remainder of our works to the first and second floor being completed in the 9 weeks that followed.
The building is steel frame with external cavity walls of clay facings with a structural metal stud inner leaf, metal stud (non-structural) and block-work partitions and lift shaft. In situ concrete upper floors with permanent formwork, pre-cast stairs, tray formed roof decking, green slate roof coverings, powder coated aluminum windows and doors.
In addition to the above a raised access floor has been installed throughout the building together with finishings consisting of suspended/plasterboard ceilings, plaster and painted walls and associated mechanical, electrical and lift installations.

The new 3-storey extension to the existing Day Care Surgery Department within the Turnberg Building will provide ancillary accommodation to the ground floor, one new trauma surgery theatre and two new elective theatres in a barn theatre arrangement together with associated accommodation necessary for a fully equipped operating department.
The new 5-storey rectilinear block is glazed to the North and west elevations with the focal point being the fully glazed stair tower that is subservient to the rest of the building. The extension houses numerous training laboratories to the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors, including dark rooms, and biology facilities. In addition to the laboratories we have provided office accommodation for the undergraduates and postgraduates.
A new PCT clinic, Tesco store and six apartments now replace what was once a petrol station in Eatham Rake. The site was heavily contaminated and therefore full remediation was necessary prior to building work beginning. The PCT is 600m² over two storeys encompassing GP rooms/treatment rooms and the six apartments are over three storeys (overall 500m²) next to and above the PCT clinic. Tesco express leases the retail space being provided next to the clinic.

Externally there will be a hard car park surfaces and soft landscape with a new road entrance formed at a major junction which will involve diverting/lowering of existing services, connecting into the existing traffic signals & a traffic management scheme whilst carrying out works.

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust is maintaining the excellent standards for the women in the region by refurbishing the maternity unit.

The refurbishment is being undertaken in phases to enable the unit to remain operational throughout and scheduled for completion in October 2010.

The contract at the clinical science building has been phased to allow the building to remain occupied. Phase 1 saw the conversion of the Cavendish suite and offices in to a new restaurant facility. Phase 2 was the renovation of “Stotts” restaurant to form staff office accommodation. As part of the refurbishment a mezzanine floor was installed to accommodate the growing department.
Phase 3 was the refurbishment of laboratories, including neuro-science, brain prep, vascular, tissue handling, bio repository & blood preparation rooms and experimental laboratories.
Providing continuity to the client, Barnes have now transferred the teams across to the Maternity unit where we are re-configuring the unit to accommodate dermatology services.
Barnes has recently completed works at Springview, part of Clatterbridge Hospital health park on the Wirral, which involved the refurbishment of the existing wards and created a brand new Eating Disorder ward located on the first floor.
The works involved demolition of existing walls in order to construct, re-plaster and decorate new walls in addition to carrying out all required joinery and M&E works on the whole 652m² project.
Springview comprises two acute mental health wards for adults of working age, an older people's mental health ward and a psychiatric intensive care unit. In order for Barnes to complete the drainage system for the proposed Eating Disorder Unit, access was needed via the ground floor and the Barnes team liaised closely with staff to gain required access to patient bedrooms and team meeting rooms.

Part of an on-going phased programme, this 80,000² ft production and distribution depot was constructed on a contaminated site. After stripping, a stone mat was laid in the floor slab and foundation areas and vibro-compacted. Traditional concrete bases and pre-cast ground beams were used. The superstructure is a 4 bay steel portal frame, steel sheet clad with roller shutters.

The new refuse and recycling centre was traditionally constructed at the Ash Road depot, Droylsden.
Following the demolition of the existing office and mess facilties, the design and build scheme provided new office and administration areas, meeting and lecture rooms along with stores, mess room and kitchen facilities. Externally, a new ramp provides disabled access and existing concrete and paved areas were extended and adapted.

This design & build project entailed the construction of a new 25,000² ft building housing a production area, offices and storage including a number of lorry loading /unloading bays.
The structural steel frame supports profiled metal cladding and the office area comprises a 2-storey pre-engineered steel frame with in-situ ground slab and precast first floor. Externally works included the provision of car park areas, lorry turning and a new internal road network with soft and hard landscaping.
