Background guidance

Where and how to use Thistle UniFinish?

Suitable for re-skimming over a wide range of backgrounds which include most paints (e.g. matt, silk and kitchen/bathroom paint), stripped walls, painted texture compounds, undercoat plaster, skim finish plaster or tile adhesive. Thistle UniFinish is for hand application only.

There are, however, some backgrounds that will require additional preparation:

— Very dirty backgrounds – clean before applying

— Loose or friable backgrounds – strip back to a sound surface

— Extremely high suction backgrounds (e.g. some lime-based or sand and cement undercoats) control suction e.g. with Thistle GypPrime

— On high suction backgrounds, the first coat may craze, if this happens apply further thin coats without delay*.

Thistle UniFinish is not suitable for some backgrounds:

— Unpainted texture compounds

— Self-cleaning paint

— Poorly bonded, friable or dusty surfaces

— Anti-graffiti paint

— Surfaces where there is flaking or delamination between layers.

Thistle UniFinish is a plaster which can be used for re-skimming over a wide range of backgrounds without the need for pre-treatment.

Pre-treatment has always been necessary to achieve a good and reliable finish, but it is a messy and time consuming job. You often need a number of coats and drying times can vary enormously depending on the type of background.

Thistle UniFinish is a plaster which is ideal for refurbishment jobs on a number of different backgrounds without the need for pre-treatment. Very high suction backgrounds may still need pre-treatment with PVA, but not having to treat the whole area means quicker application and less mess.
