SOTHEBY’S FINDS HIDDEN SIGNATURE ON BASQUIAT WORK LONDON (AP) — Sotheby’s says it has discovered that grafitti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat secretly signed one of his paintings in invisible ink.

The auction house is selling “Or-ange Sports Figure,” estimated to be worth between 3 million pounds and 4 million pounds ($4.7 million and $6.3 million).

Basquiat, who became a New York art star, signed relatively few of his canvases. But Sotheby’s said ultra-violet light revealed the artist’s name and the date 1982 beneath the layers of paint.

Cheyenne Westphal, head of con-temporary art at Sotheby’s Europe, said Tuesday that “nobody else prob-ably ever knew about this invisible

inscription” — and there could be more on other canvasses.

Basquiat died of a drug overdose in 1988, at age 27. The painting is for sale in London Wednesday.

FUGITIVE RUNS OUT OF GAS, CALLS SHERIFF FOR HELP

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A 23-year-old college student from New Mexico is scheduled to go to trial for allegedly stealing a small pumpkin worth two dollars.

KOAT-TV (http://bit.ly/wXg7PI ) in Albuquerque, N.M., reports that Lauren Medina will go before a jury and Moriarity Magistrate Judge Steve Jones on Tuesday. She is ac-cused of taking the pumpkin in Oc-tober 2011 from McCall’s Pumpkin

Patch in Moriarty.

Her sister, Annette Atencio, says Me-dina spent $75 on food that day but forgot to pay for the pumpkin she picked up as she was leaving. Atencio says her sister offered to pay but was refused and then handcuffed.

Atencio says she’s in disbelief that the theft charge against her sister was not dropped.

She says her sister could have plead-ed guilty and be given probation, but refused.
