May 2nd , the bell rang for Brad Rosenbaum, the editor of the Spoke.Brad took over the preparation of the Spoke using ClubRunner last June,

and we have not missed a weekly issue since then. He is very good atusing the new on-line capabilities to publicize the changing needs of the

club. Brad is also active on the Youth Exchange and Duck RaceCommittee. For all of these efforts and many more, Brad Rosenbaum is

a “Rotarians of Note”.

of Estes Park presentedEstes Valley Recreationand Park District ExecutiveDirector Skyler Rorabaughwith a check for $1,000and a promise ofmembership muscle for ajoint project. The pavilion was built in 1955 as a Rotary Club of Estes Park project tocommemorate the 50th Anniversary of the founding of RotaryInternational, the world’s first service club. The structure is located in theCherokee Draw Day Use area, near Highway 36 and Fourth Street inEstes Park. President Sumey estimates that Rotarians will participate in two workdays this spring to help with painting and refurbishing the structure. Thetarget date for completion of the project is the end of May, according toEVRPD Director Rorabaugh. “I would like to thank you for partnering with us on this project,” DirectorRorabaugh said at the April 25 meeting. “The funds will go toward a greatproject and we are happy to work with you again.” Director Rorabaugh said the Estes Valley Recreation and Park Districtwill install a new roof, purchase stain for the wood, complete leveling ofthe soil around the pavilion and provide a new trash receptacle. The totalcost of the project is estimated to be about $3,000, Rorabaugh saidMonday. “We appreciate the support of the Estes Park Rotary on this endeavor,as thispavilion is highly utilized and is a great parks and recreation amenity forour community.” he said Monday. “We look forward to a continuedrelationship with the Estes Park Rotary on future projects and events!” Funding for the grant came from the Estes Park Rotary Foundation,which supports initiatives that foster the general well-being of the EstesPark community. The Foundation was created in 1977 and continues todemonstrate its mission by awarding scholarships to Estes Park High

School graduatingstudents each May and byawarding grants to tax-exempt communitycharitable organizationsevery spring. In 2013,$46,500 will be providedin scholarships and$12,600 in grants to 15charitable organizations. In addition, the clubselects projects that

benefit from a Charitable Projects Fund. This year’s list of charitableprojects includes theRotary PavilionRestoration, HurricaneSandy Disaster Relief, aliteracy initiative inGuatemala, the EstesValley Library SummerReading Program, theEstes Park Medical CenterImaging Technology Unit,

Imaging Technology Unit,a Boy Scout breakfast anda Bike or Walk to Schoolbreakfast, among others. A golf tournament and a musical revue generaterevenue for the foundation, which also accepts donations and bequestsfrom Rotarians and their families.

Meeting NotesPres. Pete Sumey called the meeting to order at 12:00 p.m. Invocationwas given today by Pete Sumey, and Song and Pledge Leader was JimRobertson and we sang “Auld Lang Syne.” Wayne Newsom tried hisbest to introduce our guests, yet we didn’t have any visiting Rotarians orguests!

We have a couple of members who need our thoughts and prayers thisweek. Harry Hutcherson had some chest pains last week and is now atMedical Center of the Rockies and is scheduled for open heart surgery.Dennis McHenry had a knee replacement on Tuesday and is down atPoudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins and will be starting rehab this week.We hope for a speedy recovery for both of these fine Rotarian friends!

President Pete introduced Skyler Rohrabaugh of the Estes Valley Rec.and Park District and they announced that our next Rotary work projectwill be to help refurbish the Rotary shelter on the Lake Estes Trail whichwas built in 1955. It can use a bit of sprucing up! We will donate funds andtwo work days to make the Rotary shelter all bright and shiny and newagain. More details to follow. Jim Robertson (JR) told us no one won the raffle last week, there is$92.00 in the pot which will carry through to the next game. He is nowselling chances on the Duck Squat with $160 in the pot already.

Announcements- Tara Moenning announced the Road and River Clean-Up is this weekend to help spruce things up for the Duck Race. Volunteersshould meet at the Visitor’s Center at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. She also told usthat they have chosen our scholarship recipients. There will be 28students who receive Rotary scholarships this year, $102,000 will begoing to the kids and our club, THE Rotary Club of Estes Park will becontributing $46,500 of those dollars! Yay! Scott Thompson is sellingDuck Squat tickets today and next week. Cost is $10 per square and oncethey sell 100 squares, the Duck Squat will commence on Duck Race day.Whichever numbered square Peanut the duck “squats” on, wins half thepot, $500! Big Duck Marcia Logan told us tonight is the last Duck Racemeeting and things are hoppin! She invited all to a Kick-Off Duck Raceparty at Nicky’s next Thursday, May 2nd to celebrate the 25th anniversaryof the Duck Race. Nicky will have appetizers for $5.00 per person, cashbar. It will be fun! Please let Marcia know if you plan to attend. Also,Monday, April 29 at 5:00 p.m. we will be putting stickers on the prizeboards at The Wheel Bar. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. TheDuck Race committee needs help inputting adoption forms on race day atNicky’s, if you can help out, please let her know. Marcia thanked PatBarnett who put up a great display at the Estes Valley Library and it’s allabout the Duck Race. Stop down and see it, its right inside the front door.Marcia showed off a few new items available for sale this year tocommemorate the 25th anniversary, a silver duck, notepads, a silverflashlight and a silver eagle coin in a commemorative box. If you’reinterested in any of this merchandise, please see Marcia. Pres. Pete isvery excited about Scholarship Night when he will be the one presentingscholarships to the students. He’s really looking forward to it.

This week’s Rotarian’s of Note are the Meeting & Set-Up Crew whichincludes Mal Walker, Randy Skeie and Bob Brunson. They are the firstto come to our meeting space and the last to leave. Today, we honoredand thanked them for their behind the scenes service!

In the Happy Money Dept. Harry Livingston was happy he and his wifecelebrated their 64th Anniversay and they celebrated at The DunravenInn, Kerrie Hill was happy that Dr. Scott Taylor ran in the BostonMarathon and was happy to report he is okay. She also announced thereis a Blood Drive on Monday and all are invited to donate, (every 3seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion in the U.S.) BradRosenbaum is very happy that he and his wife Jennifer finalized their newbaby Everett's adoption and he’s now officially a Rosenbaum! Jim Austinwas happy that Dennis McHenry is doing fine after his knee surgery, hewas also happy to live in Estes Park as he celebrates his 73rd birthdayand happy to have friends in our Rotary Club. Our server Rebecca washappy that in just two weeks, she’ll be married but she was also sad she’llmiss one of our meetings when she’s out on her honeymoon. Jay Harroff

was happy that Jane is having fun in Las Vegas and he told us a pastexchange student Jon Julsrud is coming to visit them this weekend ifanyone wants to chat with him, please call the house. Also, Daffney isdoing wonderfully. Rob Ludlum is happy for the Duck Race committeeand thinks they’re doing a tremendous job. He served on the committe for15 years and knows the work involved very well. Jack Overly thenintroduced our guests, Chuck Varilek and the EPHS band to delight andentertain!
