THE CATHEDRAL PARISH AND CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINT AUGUSTINE ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA THE TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 4, 2016

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK On Friday evening of this week at 7:00 p.m., I want to

encourage you to join Bishop Estévez in a Prayer Service for Healing, Unity and Peace. As violence seems to spread more and more in our cities, towns and communi-ties each day, the president of the United States Catholic Conference, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, an-nounced this initiative.

In mid-July when Archbishop Kurtz asked that every diocese and parish observe this special Day of Prayer, he made note of the scandal of racism in our society, misun-derstanding and name-calling that can never be a part of being a Christian disciple. Rather, he noted, we must “promote peace and healing during this time of great strain in our civil society.”

This Day of Prayer for Healing is but a first step that our U.S. Bishops are taking to work effectively to bring positive dialogue to so many areas of our life in America. Among these are gun violence, race relations, economic injustice and the need for better health care for all, espe-cially mental health. I hope that you will join Bishop Esté-vez in this time of prayer for healing, unity and peace.

Love, Father Tom

[P.N. – This will be my last column for a while as I leave today for my sabbatical. As I take you with me in my pray-ers, I ask you to please pray for me as well. Ciao, for now. See you in early December.]

Cathedral Parish Youth Ministry is in great need of adult core team volunteers!

We had 38 teens show up for our recent Senior Youth Group kickoff. A year after graduating our biggest class, 20, we had our biggest turnout for a kickoff yet. This means we are growing, which means CPYM needs help! Ways to volunteer vary, but our greatest need is weekly volunteers for our Sunday Night meet-ings. These volunteers will build relationships with the teens and be a consistent presence for them. Another way is to chap-erone trips or retreats. If you are at all interested in volunteer-ing, please contact Ryan in the Youth Ministry office to learn more!

From the Director of Religious Education

Religious Education classes begin Sept. 14:

register your child now! Now that summer is nearly over, we need to direct our atten-

tion to registration for Religious Education. We are currently registering students for our Wednesday evening program. Classes will begin on September 14, and will meet on Wednesday eve-nings from 6:15-7:30 p.m. at Cathedral Parish School. To pre-register your child please contact Barbara Eretto at [email protected] or by calling (904) 824-2806 ext. 315 to re-quest a registration form.

A few pointers: If you have a child who is in grades 2 or 8 and was in religious education last year in grade 1 or 7, her or she is eligible for First Communion/Confirmation. There will be a sepa-rate registration for this beginning in September. If your child is in grade 2 or 8 and attends Cathedral Parish School, he or she must attend the Intermediate Sacramental Program through the parish. These classes will begin later in the fall. We will have a parent meeting in November and send home Sacrament packets in late September. If you have any questions please contact Bar-bara Eretto at the parish office.

If you have a child over the age of 7 who is unbaptized, please contact Barbara Eretto to begin the process for Baptism, Eucha-rist and Confirmation.

Sadly, some of our own parishioners abuse this privilege and are no longer allowed to park in these lots.

Universal Intention: Centrality of the Human Person—That each may contribute to the common good and to the building of a society that places the human person at the center.

September 10 at Marywood: Eucharist: The Ultimate Communication of Divine Mercy With Fr. Leonard Chuwa, AJ, Ph.D. Being the face of God's mercy, Jesus communicates Himself fully in the mystery of the Eucharist. As Jesus' disciples, all Christians are called to be like Christ, to be mercy. The Eucharist is communion with Christ's mystical body and a covenant to be as merciful as our Heavenly Father is merciful. Both aspects of the Great Commandment of Love can only be un-derstood from the perspective of Divine Mercy and empathy. How are we going to be students in Christ's school of mercy? Date: Sep-tember 10. Time: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost: $20, lunch included. To regis-ter, call Marywood Retreat Center at (904) 287-2525, or send an email to [email protected].

Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends, beginning September 15 Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends is an educational seminar, created by Dr. Bruce Fisher, for those adjusting to the end of a love relationship and is being offered by the Diocesan Center for Family Life. Rebuilding is an ecumenical, comprehensive guide through the process of dealing with single-again status. The next class begins on Thursday, September 15 and continues every Thursday through November 17. Classes are held at 7 p.m. at the Catholic Center in Jacksonville. Cost is $50. Call (904) 551-2619 or visit www.dcfl.org.

Divine Mercy documentary to be shown, Bishop Baker Center, September 29 at 7 p.m. The History of the Original Image of Divine Mercy is coming to Ca-thedral Parish on September 29 at 7 p.m. in the Bishop Baker Cen-ter. A team of documentarists traveled through Europe and the United States uncovering the answers to many unanswered ques-tions about the little-known Original Image of Divine Mercy. In secret and at the request of Jesus himself, Saint Faustina and her confessor, Fr. Michal Sopoćko, worked tirelessly with a relatively unknown artist to duplicate on a canvas her mystical vision of the Merciful Jesus. With Fr. Michal modeling as Christ for many hours, the three unlikely friends came up with the only Image of Divine Mercy that Saint Faustina ever saw. Books, wares and other Divine Mercy items will be available for purchase. To register for free ad-vance tickets please contact [email protected] or call the Cathedral Parish Office at (904)-824-2806. A good will offering will be collected to help defray the cost of this showing.

NEEDS MORE VOLUNTEERS! What’s it like to work there?

Read on for this week’s testimonial! “I started volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store about four and a half years ago after moving here from Connecticut. It was a good opportunity to meet people. I have found it to be fun, reward-ing, and sometimes challenging. But the best part is that I have made some very dear friends.” — Cecilia Zelenski

Interested in volunteering at the Thrift Store? Call Joe Petrone at (904) 824-3333. All volunteers will be trained.

Reflection for the Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (courtesy of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians)

“Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed them...” Luke 14: 25

So why were these great crowds traveling with Jesus? Were they amazed by his miracles, inspired by his teachings, or curious about his radical promises? Maybe they only planned to travel with him to the next village, or maybe they expected to go further. Certainly they were unaware that his ultimate destination was Jerusalem and the cross.

What sounds like an innocent beginning in today's Gospel pas-sage, then, quickly turns to Jesus laying down the conditions for truly following him and its possible consequences: renouncing fam-ily, possessions, even one’s own life. Discipleship is certainly not something to be undertaken lightly; it is not a lukewarm response. A radical message demands a radical response. It costs something; it may cost everything.

As ministers we think we have an idea of the cost—abandoning our families on weekends and holidays; working for a lower salary; putting others’ needs before our own. As someone who renovated a basement only to find that the house also needed a new roof, I know that we never really anticipate the cost! All we can do as disci-ples is be willing, choosing to travel with Jesus each day, one deci-sion at a time. The ultimate cost may exceed our expectations in-deed—not necessarily losing family and possessions but certainly losing our hearts to him! Prayer: Loving and challenging Lord, help me willingly embrace traveling with you despite the cost, one day, one decision at a time.

Cathedral Office/Rectory visitor parking We realize that getting to the Cathedral office/rectory is becoming harder

and harder. Therefore, we have changed the location of parking spaces for those needing to visit the office/rectory during weekday office hours.

The parking spaces for those who have an appointment or need to take care of things at the office/rectory are located in the “Bank of America” lot. There are two spots reserved. Just mention to the attendant that you have to go to the office/rectory. They will direct you to the appropriate spaces. These spots are for office/rectory visitors only and are intended to be short term.

We think you will find these spots much more parishioner friendly than past office parking spots. Please call ahead if you have mobility issues and we’ll try to help with a closer spot.

You have one precious life to give. How do you choose to offer it to God? Be willing to accept the challenges of discipleship. If you have a question about a vocation to the priesthood or religious life, contact Father David Ruchinski, Vocation Director, at (904) 262-3200 ext. 101, or email [email protected].

Call (904) 824-1752 to register or at www.ssjfl.org.

Every Saturday, 2:30-3:30 p.m.: Centering Prayer hosted by Sister Margaret Zapf, SSJ Centering prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, in which we experience God’s presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself.
