May 17th, 2020 6th Sunday of Easter

Today we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter on this first day of the week

known as THE LORD’S DAY. “If you love me you will keep my commandments,” says Jesus to us today.

We could say that is a very strong statement by Jesus. Does this mean that every time we sin we do not love Jesus? Yes. Although we love Jesus, every time we commit sin we love something or someone else more than Jesus. If we love Jesus more than anything else we will keep ourselves free from sin for Jesus. If we love Jesus we will strive to give ourselves totally to him. When we sin we are giving ourselves to something other than Jesus or to somebody other than Jesus. And when we love Jesus with all our heart, soul, mind and strength we will not want to put

anything, no matter how small, before Jesus. Again the words of Jesus in our Gospel are, “If you love me you will keep my commandments.” Sometimes we hear people make statements like, “Jesus understands that I am human. He will forgive me.” Jesus is forgiving, we do not doubt Jesus’ mercy. But if we love Jesus more than anything we will put Jesus before whatever it is that is tempting us and we will try to root that sin out of our lives completely.

Loving Jesus therefore is not just something emotional; loving Jesus means changing our lives, reforming our lives, working on our personalities and characters, overcoming sinful habits, stretching ourselves to love as Jesus loved. Loving Jesus means thinking about ourselves and others as Jesus thinks.

We cannot have both a pure love of Jesus and sin in our lives at the same time. Truly loving Jesus leads us to give up whatever in our lives draws us away from Jesus. Truly loving Jesus leads us to making changes in the way we live and think and act. Sinning is putting Jesus in second place but when we love Jesus we put Jesus in first place and so we will keep his commandments. How do we know if we love Jesus? Look at the way we live our lives. Do we live as Jesus asks? Do we live as Jesus asks us through the Church’s teaching? If we do, then we know that we love Jesus. But if we say we love Jesus and yet continue to think or act in a way that is the opposite of Jesus then we see that we do not put Jesus in first place, we do not truly love Jesus because we do not keep his commandments. And if we truly love Jesus and do not understand the Church’s teaching on an issue, our love of Jesus will prompt us to probe and learn until we understand why the Church teaches what she does so that we will not cause pain to Jesus by not keeping his commandments. So for some, loving Jesus may mean humbly walking the way of trust until clearer understanding comes.

Loving Jesus

and keeping his commandments fills us with the love of Jesus and the love of the Father, and in our hearts we see Jesus. When we love Jesus and keep his commandments we

have Jesus in our hearts. Sin kills the life of God in us, serious sin kills the life of God in us in a serious way. It is not God who sends us to Purgatory, we send ourselves to Purgatory because if our soul is impure we would be blinded by the pure light of God’s love and we need to purify ourselves to be able to enjoy the vision of God in heaven. God does not send anyone to hell, anyone who goes to hell does so because they have chosen to totally reject the love of God.

How much does Jesus love us? This much, he stretched out his arms on the cross and died for us. Let us never be afraid to turn to Jesus for mercy after sinning, he is always waiting to forgive us and restore us again. CHRIST IS RISEN!!!

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION THIS YEAR The Bishops of New Jersey have agreed to transfer the celebration of the Solemnity of the Ascension from a holy day of obligation observed on Thursday, May 21, 2020, to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, May 24, 2020, replacing the Mass and readings of the Seventh Sunday of Easter. The transfer of the feast is for this year only. The bishops felt this necessary to accommodate priests who found the livestreaming of Mass difficult. As you are well aware, the obligation of the faithful to attend Mass remains suspended for the present time.

NEW WAY TO GIVE. BY TEXT To securely make a gift to OUR LADY OF THE MOUNTAIN CHURCH text a dollar amount to 908-651-9118. You will be asked to complete a one-time registration page with your billing and contact information. After this registration, you can give any time by texting a dollar amount to our phone number.

CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY FAMILY --- NEXT SUNDAY (MAY 24TH) AT 11AM MASS

Knights of Columbus asked me to do the consecration of our families to the Holy Family. I think especially at this time it is so important to turn to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and ask for help and protection during this pandemic time.

Families today face many struggles, both through cultural pressure and through personal struggles that accompany family life. Despite these struggles – and partly as a result of conquering them --- families have great capacity for love and joy, a joy that is strengthened through the peace and truth found in Christ. To help families live out the joy of Christ, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori has composed a prayer through which families will come together to consecrate themselves under the protection of the Holy Family. In this prayer, we ask for the aid or intercession of the perfect son Jesus Christ, Mary the perfect mother, and Joseph who is a model for every father. Preparing for the Consecration to the Holy Family is not a single event. It is choosing a way of life for your family. Through this consecration, each participant is consciously choosing to be a beacon of God’s love through His Church

NEWS AND UPDATES BISHOP ELECT KEVIN SWEENEY --- See the Paterson Diocese website to view the greeting sent to us by our new bishop, Father Kevin J. Sweeney, Pastor of Saint Michael Church in Brooklyn. Father Sweeney will be ordained as bishop and installed as the 8th Bishop of Paterson at a time to be announced. Let us keep Bishop Elect Sweeney in our daily prayers asking the Lord to bless him in the episcopal ministry he will assume. PRAYER FOR THE BISHOP-ELECT --- Good and gracious God, we stand on the threshold of a new time for our diocese. As we cross that threshold in thankfulness, we ask you to pour out an abundance of grace on our Bishop-elect Kevin Sweeney that he may faithfully assume his ministry among us and that, together with him, we may work for the building up of our local church. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. I AM HERE FOR YOU --- Let me assure you, my dear parishioners, THAT I AM PROVIDING PASTORAL CARE REGARDLESS OF THE PANDEMIC. Please call or e-mail me if I can be helpful to you. I am available for confession, visiting the sick with the sacraments and providing other pastoral care that is needed. PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT ME – I AM HERE FOR YOU! THANK YOU --- These are strange times, but we trust that God is with us. We walk together in hope that we will find new ways to stay connected, to comfort one another, and to reach out together for Christ's healing of our world and our people. Thank you for mailing and dropping off your weekly donations. If you would like to write a check for multiple envelopes you can. But please give us the envelopes NOT a list of dates. The envelope company processes the envelopes w/machines so your envelopes go through a machine not by hand. You can do 1 check but please include all the envelopes that your donations is covering. Thank you so much for helping me out during these very difficult times. Your help has been invaluable to me, and I don’t know how I would have managed without your help and support. Thank you so much. I sincerely appreciate your generosity. In a special way I would like to thank my office staff for being very helpful to me at this time. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ABUNDANTLY FOR YOUR LOVE AND COMMITMENT TO OUR LADY OF THE MOUNTAIN PARISH.

It is only through your contributions that we are able to survive and deliver services and carry out the important spiritual work within the church and beyond especially now during this pandemic time. “For it is in giving that we receive.” ―St. Francis of Assisi.

.PRAY DAILY. .PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR PROTECTION

AND HELP. O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You…know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of those of us who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
