THIS Saturday, 20 September 2017, 62nd Anniversary of James Dean’s Crash
From Wikipedia: Death of James Dean
On September 30, 1955, Dean and his Porsche factory-trained mechanic, Rolf Wütherich, were at
Competition Motors in Hollywood preparing the “Little Bastard” for the weekend sports car races at
Salinas. Dean originally intended to tow the Porsche behind his Ford station wagon. Because the Spyder
did not have enough “break-in” miles prior to the race, Wütherich recommended that Dean drive it to
Salinas to get more “seat time” behind the wheel.
San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year
Weekly Update 26 September 2017
sgvr.pca.org 10 of 49 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR
At approximately 5:15 pm, Dean and Hickman left Blackwells Corner, driving west on Route 466 toward
Paso Robles, approximately 60 miles (97 km) away. Dean accelerated in the “Little Bastard” and left the
Ford station wagon far behind. Further along on Route 466, the Porsche crested Polonio Pass and
headed down the long Antelope Grade, passing cars along the way toward the junction floor at Route
466 and Route 41. At approximately 5:45 pm, a black-and-white 1950 Ford Tudor driven at high speed
was headed east on Route 466 just west of the junction near Shandon. Its driver, 23-year-old Cal Poly
student Donald Turnupseed, made a left turn onto Route 41 headed north, toward Fresno. As
Turnupseed's Ford crossed over the center line, Dean, who was driving at a reported speed of 85 mph
(137 km/h), apparently tried to steer the Spyder in a “side stepping” racing maneuver, but with
insufficient time and space, the two cars crashed almost head-on. A witness, John Robert White,
reportedly saw the Spyder smash into the ground two or three times in cartwheels, and landing in a
gully beside the shoulder of the road, northwest of the junction.
Wütherich survived with a broken jaw and serious hip and femur injuries that required immediate
surgery. Turnupseed was only slightly injured with facial bruises and a bloodied nose. After being
interviewed by the CHP, Turnupseed hitch-hiked in the dark to his home in Tulare.

Next Wednesday, 4 October 2017, 47th Anniversary of Janis Joplin’s Death
Jim Marshall Photo
From Wikipedia, Janis Joplin
On October 4, 1970, producer Paul Rothchild became concerned when Joplin failed to show up at Sunset
Sound Recorders for a recording session. Full Tilt Boogie's road manager John Cooke drove to the
Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood where Joplin was staying. He saw Joplin's psychedelically painted
Porsche 356 C Cabriolet in the parking lot. Upon entering Joplin's room (#105), he found her dead on the
floor beside her bed. The official cause of death was a heroin overdose, possibly compounded by
alcohol. Cooke believes Joplin had been given heroin that was much more potent than normal, as
several of her dealer's other customers also overdosed that week.

27-29 October 2017, Phoenix Flight
1977. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index closed the year at 831. New
York City was hit with a massive blackout lasting 25 hours, resulting in a baby
boom nine months later! Apple released the Apple II personal computer.
Jimmy Carter was elected President. Star Wars Episode IV dropped (wait,
what happened to episodes I - III?) The King of Rock and Roll died from a
heart attack, maybe too many peanut butter and banana sandwiches? And
you could check out of the Hotel California any time you liked but you could
never leave!
And in Phoenix a small club of Porsche car owners held a concours event
called The Phoenix Flight!
Fast forward 40 years and a large club of Porsche car owners is preparing for a concours weekend called
Phoenix Flight. Some things just never change!
Join the celebration of 40 years of Phoenix Flight on October 27 – 29, 2017!
On Friday, October 27th, there will be a reception poolside at the McCormick Scottsdale Resort at 7401
N. Scottsdale Road. The reception will begin at 6:00 PM. Come visit with old friends and meet new
friends during this 4 hour evening event. That evening we will hold a silent auction for this year’s charity
“Guide Dogs for the Blind” (https://www.guidedogs.com/) so please bring an open wallet for a great
cause! Book at room at the resort at a club's special rate and party all night!
Saturday morning, October 28th, come show your nicely cleaned and prepared Porsche in the Concours
that will be held on the Streets of Scottsdale! The venue is N. Marshall Way near the Fashion Square
mall at Camelback Road and N. Marshall Way. The map is on the Arizona Region's Web site. Parking will
begin at 6:30 a.m. and judging will begin at 9:30 AM. After judging wander around and enjoy the shops
and galleries. But don't eat too much because the trophies will be awarded at 1:00 p.m. while everyone
is enjoying tapas at the awards ceremony. The street has to be turned back to the City by 4:00 PM. If you
aren’t entering your car, come down and join in the fun anyway, there will be a special area set aside in
the adjacent parking garage for club members!
The Concours is part of the PCA Zone Concours series. So here’s your chance to pick up some points
towards the year-end Concours results! Especially if you are coming from another Region, you get
“travel points”.
After all that, get some rest because on Sunday October 29th you will want to join in on a tour that will
visit two fabulous private collections of automobiles! The proceeds from these tours will go to charity,
the RPM Foundation (www.rpmfoundation.org). All PCA members can register for these tours.

Oktoberfeste
Oktoberfest began as the celebration of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s (later King Ludwig I4) marriage
to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 17, 1810.5 The Bavarians enjoyed the party, but
decided that October was too cold, so they moved it to September. Oktoberfest seems to combine well
with German cars (wenn Sie nicht zu viel trinken Bier).
There are lots of Oktoberfeste to choose from:
184th Oktoberfest in München, 16 September through 3 October 2017
Obviously, the one in Munich is the original. One might expect Mädchen im Dirndl, there’s also
Armbrustschützen und Scheibenschießen6. It all takes place at die Theresienwiese im Zentrum von
München.
Oktoberfest Phoenix Club, Weekends, 22 September through 29 October 2017
The Phoenix Club, 1340 S. Sanderson Avenue, Anaheim, California 92806, phone 714.563.4166
Friday: 6:00 PM until Midnight
Saturday: 5:00 PM until Midnight
Sunday: 12:00 PM until 6:00 PM
The air rifle range should be open 6:00 PM Saturdays and 1:00 PM Sundays.
Oktoberfest Alpine Village, Weekends, 8 September through 28 October 2017
Alpine Village Center, 833 West Torrance Blvd, Torrance, CA 90502, phone 310.327.4384
Friday: 6:00 PM-midnight
Saturday: 5:00 PM-midnight
Sunday: 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
They encourage patrons to buy tickets online. Friday & Saturday are 21+; Sunday is All Ages.
4 Ludwig I was not “Mad King Ludwig”—that was his grandson, Ludwig II. Ludwig I was essentially overthrown in 1848 shortly after he attempted to tax beer. 5 From wikipedia.org 6 The first athlete disqualified from the Olympics for doping was a Swedish modern pentathlete who had “two beers” to “calm his nerves” before the pistol shooting portion at the 1968 Olympics.

2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Reportedly Sets 6:48.75 Nurburgring Lap Record
From autoevolution, 21 Sep 2017, 14:10 UTC, by Andrei Tutu:
Photo: EMS Nordschliefe TV
We've seen King Kong lapping the Nordschleife on countless occasions and the latest info on the topic
talks about the 700 hp animal having lapped the Ring in 6:48.75.
The said chronograph number was mentioned by Edo Karabegovic, the man behind the Porsche-friendly
Edo Performance German aftermarket developer and you can find it in a Facebook post.
Mark Webber let it slip that the Rennsport Neunelfer managed to hit 208 mph on the track's main
straight, a velocity level that tops those delivered by the current holder of the record, the 640 hp
Lamborghini Huracan Performante (6:52).
The quickest 911 derivative is currently the 991.2 GT3, which needs 7:12.7 to lap the infamous German
circuit.

World's Greatest Drag Race 7!
From Motor Trend by Edward Loh:
WGDR has been a staple of Motor Trend’s BDC online coverage since 2011—it’s a made-for-YouTube
phenomenon. For the uninitiated, imagine a simple quarter-mile drag race complicated by the addition

of more than just two competitors. How many more? Well, that’s what makes it World’s Greatest. In our
inaugural running, we set 11 of the hottest sports cars alongside one another and launched them all
down the 1,320 toward a checkered flag.
For the past six years, we’ve been lucky enough to have the use of a former Motor Trend test facility,
the decommissioned Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Irvine, California. But as that facility has slowly
transformed into a mixed-use residential, retail, and community space, we’ve seen its once pristine
runways get plowed up, parked on, or fall into windshield-chipping disrepair. We’ve needed a new
venue for the past few years, and after a hard target search of public, private, and military airfields
throughout California, our BDC production team, headed up by Luis Navarro, located an active U.S. Air
Force base open to our crazy idea and willing to navigate the layers of Pentagon bureaucracy required to
secure it.
Executive editor Mark Rechtin discusses the finer points of Vandenberg Air Force Base in his column, but
all you need to know here is that its 3-mile runway is pristine, and its USAF stewards are hardworking
and speed-friendly men and women who truly represent the best of America.

Porsche unveils 2018 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo
When Porsche announced the Panamera Sport Turismo [station wagon], the lineup included a Sport
Turismo version of the:
Panamera 4
Panamera 4S
Panamera 4 E-Hybrid
Panamera Turbo
But no 680 hp Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. That has changed!
From Autoblog, by John Beltz Snyder, Sep 25th 2017 at 6:01 PM
Porsche packed a lot of performance and technology (and letters) into the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.
At the same time, it put a lot of practicality into other Panameras with the Sport Turismo treatment,
giving them a wagon-y rear end and more storage space. Now, Porsche has gone and combined the two,
unveiling the 2018 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo, which is perhaps the poshest and most
fun way to bring home a load of groceries.

The Sport Turismo's powertrain is the same as the four-door version, pairing a twin-turbo V8 with an
electric motor to produce 680 horsepower and 626 pound-feet of torque. It'll do the 0-60 sprint in just
3.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 192 miles per hour. Ceramic composite brakes are standard,
along with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport with torque vectoring, three-chamber air suspension
with Porsche Active Suspension Management and 21-inch 911 Turbo Design wheels. The Sport Chrono
Package is also standard.
The Sport Turismo has a raised roofline, providing more headroom and rear storage space. At the rear of
the roof, it features a three-stage adaptive spoiler that can produce up to 110 pounds of additional
downforce (or optimize aerodynamics for efficiency, depending on the driving situation). Inside the car,
it has three rear seats that can fold down for a maximum of 45.7 cubic feet of storage space, or
optionally a posh pair of reclining rear buckets. The car is also equipped with Porsche's digital cockpit,
Porsche InnoDrive driver assistance technology. Rear-axle steering is an optional feature.
Porsche is now taking orders for the 2018 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo, which is priced at a
starting MSRP of $189,450 including destination. Deliveries begin in the spring of 2018.
