Amazon Art Studio Opens in Pocono Pines Introducing the Pocono Mountains’ newest creative space: Amazon Art Studio! Located along Route 940 in Pocono Pines, Amazon Art Studio provides a variety of artistic services to residents and visitors in the Pocono Mountains. The mixed-media studio offers art classes for all ages and skill levels, weekly art socials, private art parties, photography and digitization services, and monthly gallery shows. Creative Director Jennifer Amazon leads on-site art classes, canvas painting parties, “drink and draw” events and summer youth programs. Experienced in hosting art events and after-school programs across the Poconos, Amazon is supported in her new venture by partners Matthew Ferro, Media Specialist and Krista Pastecchi, Operations Director. Ferro and Pastecchi team up to provide photography services including headshots, family portraits, photo booth services, wedding and engagement photos, event photography and more. The studio’s video and photo restoration services give new life to film slides, negatives, prints and recordings. All are welcome to explore the Amazon Art Studio during a Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, March 29. Open to the public from noon to 8 p.m., the event will include a canvas painting party, an art exhibition featuring artwork created by the Amazon team, raffles, a make-and-take project for kids, a photo booth, and complimentary refreshments. Patty’s Parade Marches On in the Poconos St. Patrick’s Day has come and gone, but the festive fun marches on in Downtown Stroudsburg! The 37th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is set to take place on Sunday, March 23 at 1:30 p.m.

A presentation of the Pocono Irish American Club, this spirited celebration is among the premier parades in Pennsylvania and the surrounding areas.

Gather the whole family and join the merriment on Main Street! See talented musicians and dancers, local organizations and fantastic floats as they wind through the Boroughs of Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg! The procession covers a distance of approximately two miles, beginning at the Stroudsburg High School and ending in East Stroudsburg.

Many local shops and eateries will offer specials and entertainment in conjunction with the parade.

Meet Charlie and his owner Carl! Charlie is a two-year-old German Shepherd Dog and he’s as sweet as can be! Along with Therapy Dogs International, Charlie has been working for Clymer Library’s Tail Wagging Tutors Program for several months. Charlie helps children and adults with learning disabilities, as well as those who have trouble or would like to become more comfortable reading out loud. Charlie is an AKC K-9 Good Citizen, and has been certified in obedience by the PA Police K-9 Association. Shawnee Gallery Hosts Victorian Tea You are cordially invited to the Shawnee Gallery for its celebrated Victorian Tea! The enchanting occasion is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 12. Slide into spring at Camelback Mountain Resort! March Mountain Madness brings exciting end-of-season events to the slopes on Saturday and Sunday, March 22 and 23. On Saturday, start the day early and secure your spot for the Parking Lot Party! Reserved tailgating spaces open at 7 a.m. and entertainment begins at 10:30. Tailgate themes and cuisine will be judged at noon. Winners will be announced by 1 p.m. At 1:30 p.m., make your way to the Sunbowl Slope for the annual Pond Skimming Competition! This zany challenge features costumed competitors and lots of laughs—it’s a spectacle you won’t want to miss! Skiers and snowboarders age 16 and older will race down the hill and surf over a shallow pond at the bottom. There will be prizes for the most original method, best dismount and best in show. After the action, the party continues with a performance by the Maybabies at 5 p.m. On Sunday, head back to the mountain for another full day of fun! Parking spots re-open at 7 a.m. and a DJ starts spinning tunes at noon. Camelback’s Cardboard Box Derby takes place on the Sunbowl Slope at 1 p.m. Catch a glimpse of the action as teams hit the hill in creatively constructed cardboard chariots! With materials restricted to cardboard, tape, paint, paper and glue, the competition will surely showcase silly sleds and dramatic wipeouts! Vehicles will be judged for the best time, best dismount and best theme. CBK Mountain Adventures’ 4000’ Zip Flyer, Twin Zip Lines and Mountain Coaster are scheduled to be open during the March Mountain Madness Weekend. Hours of operation are weather dependent and to be announced. Both the Pond Skimming Competition and the Cardboard Box Derby are free of charge. Some restrictions apply. Temperatures are rising and the signs of spring are all around. Celebrate the season with an invigorating hike in the Poconos! The four-county region encompasses many scenic parks and public trails perfect for hiking, biking, bird watching and exploring. Situated within the boundaries of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) maintains 12 miles of hiking trails, with six paths of varying distance and difficulty. All trails begin and end on PEEC’s campus and offer unique views of natural phenomena. Walk through lush oak-hickory forests and shady hemlock ravines on PEEC’s Ridgeline Trail! The picturesque path covers a distance of 3.63 miles and offers glimpses of vernal wetlands. Take it easy on the Two Ponds Trail! This white-blazed walking path takes about an hour to navigate, showcasing towering pine plantations and two scenic pond environments along the way. Watch for birds and wildlife as you amble along this flat pathway. PEEC’s Tumbling Waters Trail is a favorite among Pocono hikers. The Historical Association of Tobyhanna Township (HATT) will host a Historical Excursion to Arlington National Cemetery on Monday and Tuesday, May 12 and 13, 2014.

From HATT: “In 1864 at age 20, William Henry Christman left his family and the community of Tobyhanna Township to fight for his country in the Civil War. As it was for so many, he died in service, and less than two months after he enlisted, on May 11, 1864. At the same time, a new military cemetery was being established in the Washington, D.C. area: Arlington National Cemetery. On May 13, 1864, Pvt. William Henry Christman of Tobyhanna Township was the first soldier to be buried at this now famous hallowed ground. Since this is the 150th year of Arlington National Cemetery, our nation is honoring this treasure and those who rest there with a month-long national commemoration. The events begin on May 13 with a special wreath-laying ceremony at Pvt. Christman’s gravesite. Dignitaries representing our nation are expected to be in attendance.”

WHY THE LAKE NAOMI~TIMBER TRAILS MARKET IS HEALTHY(While other markets around the country struggle - is this a buyer’s market?)Real estate markets have always been local in nature. Apartments in New York City are still commanding loftyprices, and homes in the Charlotte area are still increasing. Yet, rampant speculative building in many parts of thecountry nearly collapsed their markets. To perpetuate the nonsense, strategic financing schemes lured custom-ers deeper into the boiling cauldron. For home buyers and for speculators alike, mortgages were easily obtainedwith little or no documentation. If you had a pulse, a mortgage was waiting. Don't bother with the details... priceswill always go up to cover the excesses. Sadly, it’s not always so.

Thankfully, Lake Naomi~Timber Trails has been a different story. During the forty plus years we’ve been here atLake Naomi there have been some violent swings in both the real estate market and the stock market. Very re-cently, the stock market’s acrobatics were enough to give any sane person a concussion. Here in our local realestate market, we’ve remained rather steady. Did you know the average sale in the last 12 months is lower by aminuscule 1%? From June 2008, the median sale is up 7%!** How is that possible? First and foremost, we are notin a primary home market. The vast majority of our homes are discretionary purchases and our clientele is morefinancially stable and financially adept than the average first-time home buyer. If our clients aren’t paying cash,they’re taking plain-vanilla fixed-rate conventional mortgages. We dodged the scathing sub-prime mortgagefiasco. Too few lots remain for overbuilding or speculative building to ever be a problem.

Every year, at Memorial Day, we hold our breath anticipating the new season. After reading in the media about theweak markets in other parts of the country, we were particularly curious this year. Memorial Day weekend marksthe start of our main selling season, and we couldn't have been more surprised or delighted.

Over Memorial Day weekend, we sold five houses, one in Lake Naomi for $790,000 and one in Timber Trails for$450,000. It was most encouraging to observe multiple offers come in on one of the properties. Neither deal wasgiven away. One sold for 90.2% of the asking price, and the other for 92%.

This was one of the best starts for any summer season in memory!

** Lake Naomi is a diverse community of home values, ranging from under $200,000 to over $1,000,000.A single million dollar lakefront sale can significantly skew the average, making the median sale price a far moresignificant indicator of market trends.

CAMP MINSI PROJECT STRENGTHENS OUR PROPERTY VALUES(An assist from an unusual source)Hopefully, you have already read the article in the Lake Naomi Club newsletter, “Reflections,” that explains howthe Wildlands Conservancy, the Monroe County Open Space Program, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylva-nia have created a plan to protect the 1,242 acre Camp Minsi from future development or commercializa-tion. Camp Minsi is the Boy Scouts of America property immediately to the east of Lake Naomi that residesalong Stillwater Lake. The exact method the property will be protected is not significant. What is significant,however, is the fact that all that land will never be developed in competition to Lake Naomi~Timber Trails.

Virtually all the lakes of any significance in the Poconos have already been subdivided and developed. CampMinsi is one of the remaining exceptions that has access to a sizeable lake, and, is right in our back yard. Now,however, we will no longer have to wonder what will be built there. The answer is nothing... and in perpetuity.

The property is about a third larger than Timber Trails, so it had the potential to be a competitor for many years.By removing potential development, folks looking for a quality lake community will have their sights focusedmore acutely than ever on Lake Naomi~Timber Trails.

New roads have enhanced access to Lake Naomi, and the lack of meaningful competition will have a substan-tial effect on our future property values. We didn’t create the law of supply and demand - we merelywatch its effect.

A Marvelous Migration:Spring Birding in the poconoS

Spring weather is making its way back to the Pocono Mountains, and migratory birds are not far behind!

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, spring migration peaks during the months of March, April and May. Birds that reside in the northern hemisphere return home in the spring to take advantage of emerging insect populations, budding plants and abundant nesting locations.

Welcome warmer weather and returning birds during environmental education events in March!

On Saturday, March 22, all are welcome to attend a Woodcock Dance at the Varden Conservation Area! Participants will learn about the amazing American Woodcock and its dramatic nuptial flight, and then migrate to the “dance floor” to witness the ritual. Events begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free. Also on Saturday, March 22, a Feeder Fidelity program at Monroe County Conservation District’s Environmental Education Center (MCEEC) will educate adults and children on the importance of bird-banding. Join Environmental Educator Darryl Speicher as he bands birds at Kettle Creek’s feeders and explains what experts are learning about feeder fidelity.
