HALAKHIC CORNER
Q: Why do we fast on the 17th of Tammuz?
A: The Gemara Taanit lists five tragic events that occurred on the 17th of Tammuz (Taanit pages 26a and 28b):
1) Moshe descended from Har Sinai and broke the first set of Luchot after seeing the Jewish people worshipping the Golden Calf.
2) Starting on this day the Kohanim were prevented from bringing the Korban Tamid during the period of the first Beit Hamikdash.
3) The walls of Yerushalayim were breached on this day, which is three weeks before the second Beit Hamikdash was destroyed.
4) A Greek general by the name of Apostumos burned a Sefer Torah.
5) An idol was placed in the Beit Hamikdash (The Yerushalmi notes that this was either done by Apostumos after he burned the Sefer Torah, or by the wicked king Menashe during the period of the first Beit Hamikdash).

DAVENING AT HOME
Minhagim and Halakhot ~ Shabbat Chukat-Balak
July 3 - 10, 2020
By Rabbi Elazar Muskin
During the Covid-19 crisis, the following guide should be followed if you are
davening without a Minyan.
FRIDAY JULY 3RD
• Early Mincha is at 6:30 PM. Earliest candle lighting is at 6:39 PM. A full Kabbalat
Shabbat and Maariv should be recited starting only after 6:39 PM. After the
Maariv Amida recite Vayechulu but not Magen Avot and Elohenu V’Elohei
Avotenu. They are only said when davening with a permanent Minyan.
• When starting Shabbat early, remember to repeat the full Shema after 8:54 PM.
• Candles can be lit between 6:39 - 7:51 PM
• If one accepts Shabbat before Shkiah (8:09 PM), Mincha should begin no later
than 8:00 PM.
SHABBAT JULY 4TH – CHUKAT-BALAK
• Shacharit is a regular Shabbat Shacharit.
• Do not say Anim Zemirot. This is recited when davening with a Minyan.
• The Torah reading from a Chumash is Parashat Chukat-Balak. The Haftorah is
from Micha (5:6-6:8).
• Skip both chapters of Y’kum Purkan and the Mi Sheberach. They are said only
when davening with a Minyan.
• Recite the Mi Sheberach for the IDF and the Tefilah for Medinat Yisrael.
• Recite Av HaRachamim followed by Ashrei.
• Mincha can be said as early as 1:34 PM, but no later than 7:55 PM.
• During Mincha recite the sentence V’Ani Tefilati right after U’va L’Tziyon.
• Recite Tzidkatcha Tzedek at Mincha.
• Maariv is the regular weekday Maariv.
• Recite V’he Noam and V’yeeten Lecha.
• Last time to recite Kiddush Levanah is Saturday night. Look up at the moon and
then turn east to say Kiddush Levanah. If you have no family member with you
say the phrase Shalom Alechem – Alechem Shalom to yourself three times. Say
Alenu at the conclusion of Kiddush Levanah.
• Shabbat ends 8:54 PM. Say a complete Havdalah.
SUNDAY JULY 5TH - WEDNESDAY JULY 8TH
• Regular weekday Davening with Tachanun at Shacharit and Mincha.
• On Monday and Thursday recite the longer version of Tachanun just like we do if
we had a Minyan and were reading the Torah.
• Rabbi Soloveitchik Z”L was of the opinion that when saying Tachanun even when
a Sefer Torah isn’t present, one should still fall on one’s arm and recite the
opening chapter just like the way we do when davening inside a Shul.
THURSDAY JULY 9TH: 17TH TAMUZ FAST
• Fast begins at 4:20 AM on Thursday.
• After Shacharit Amida say Selichot for 17th of Tamuz. Skip the passage of

• After Selichot recite Avenu Malkenu and then a full Tachanun.
• At Mincha insert in the Amida the passage of Anenu in the Brakha of Shema
Kolenu.
• Say Sim Shalom instead of Shalom Rav in the Mincha Amida.
• After the Amida say Avenu Malkenu followed by Tachanun.
• Fast ends 8:43 PM.

• Regular weekday Davening with Tachanun at Shacharit.
• Early Mincha is at 6:25 PM. Earliest candle lighting is at 6:38 PM.

than 7:55 PM and candles no later than 7:48 PM.

your mouth must be covered completely at all times. Please be socially responsible and comply.
