Since 2004 the Southern California Biotechnolo-gy Center at Miramar College (SCBC) has engaged in industry partnerships to bring STEM education programs to all ages. The programs include:

Great Giveaways: SCBC collects supplies and equipment year round from industry. Giveaway events redistribute these wanted ‘orphans’ to K-12 teachers who creatively use them to provide hands-on science experiences to their students.

S2 Summer Science Camps: College professors teach a one-week, fun-filled hands-on science camp to middle school students.

Life Sciences Summer Institute (LSSI) for Teachers: Partnered with the San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP) and funded by the Amgen Foundation (https://www.amgenbiotechexperience.

com/), LSSI has trained K-12 teachers for the last 10 years. Industry partners host ‘job shadows’ allowing teachers to see real-world science. SCBC provides year round FREE materials and loaner lab equipment so teachers can implement the hands-on biotechnology curriculum. The program currently reaches approximately 8000 students per year.

Life Sciences Summer Institute Internships: Now part of the SDWP Connect2Careers effort, SCBC pre-trains high school interns for eight week paid summer lab experience. The program reaches 30 to 50 students per year, but gets over 300 qualified applicants!

Biotechnology Employment Skills Training (BEST) Workshops: Experienced industry instructors provide 24 hours of hands-on training for

college students who need an industry perspective to round out their college work and enhance their employability.
