SUNDAY MEETING 25th May 2014 The meeting opened with President June expressing her disappointment at the rather small number in attendance. However when all was taken into account the eighteen who did brave the oncoming cold winter weather would have been boosted considerably if quite a few of our regulars had not been away on holidays, sick and so on. Next June advised that our up and coming Annual General Meeting originally planned for July, will now be held on the 17th of August. Members will be notified in writing this week. It was also mentioned that there was not sufficient interest to warrant the club engaging the services of Guilio Marcolongo to demonstrate for us again this year. Those who are interested will still be able to see him demonstrate at either Western Division on the 20th of July or Central Coast on the 7th of July. Next item mentioned was the need to apply to the Council for a grant which will be required if we are allocated land to build our own premises. It was decided that the Secretary follow up with the required paper work. Next issue was a safety concern --- It has been noticed that chucks have been returned to the tool boards wide open and not cleaned. Please wind the chucks to a closed position when replacing (this in turn will help to remind users to keep the chuck jaws well within the safe working positions). The Bunnings report relating to last Friday was rather disappointing profit wise (maybe the date had something to people staying at home and not venturing outdoors). On the brighter side the numbers willing to help was excellent. Well done, lets keep it up. A letter was received from the Warringah Toy Library advising us that they will be closing down due to financial difficulties but thanking us for our support by way of cash donations over the years. We are winding down on the St. Ives Markets, one to go. Over the last few months they have been a financial fizzer for us. The June markets were washed out, so weather permitting we will see how we go at the first Sunday in July meeting. The treasurers’ report was a positive result for the month with cash on hand nicely in the blue and our investment accounts showing a balance that will hopefully cover the cost of fitting out our workshop if we are lucky enough to be allocated land and grants. Narrabeen RSL Club supports us so it is a necessity that we support the club accordingly. Will all members please ensure your Narrabeen RSL Club membership is current.

Show & Tell Today the Show and Tell segment was about producing two items that were identical. Sadly only four of our turners came to the party, to say it was a disappointment would be an understatement. SHOW AND TELL was very light on. Maybe the challenge to produce two or more items that were the same shape was a bit tough?

Lloyd Ross Two identical pens

Tasmanian Blackwood

Graham Truelove Two pair of salt and pepper shakers

Cotoneaster

Gordon Scott A range of pens

Two similar designs in different burls

Next Months challenge is to make a pen and/or a bracelet – get the imagination and the lathe working. And PLEASE - some more participants.

Demonstration: We had two demonstrators today, Graham Truelove demonstrating his method of making salt and pepper shakers from Banksia nuts and the making of a business card or appointment card holder and June McKimmie showing her method of holding a burl for turning using a face plate and hot melt glue. First up was Graham Truelove. First find suitable Banksia nuts (West Aust ones are a good size), mount between centres and turn to a cylinder with a spigot on one end to suit your chuck. Remove and mount in chuck. (If you have a problem removing the spur centre call on Gordon McKenzie for advice and help.) Turn down to the shape required making sure the cap end is a size to suit the cap. Graham then reduced the lathe speed and used a forstner bit to bore a hole through the nut to suit the plastic salt or pepper container checking the depth as he went. When satisfied with the fit he increased speed, shaped the top to suit the insert, trimmed the shape and sanded it to a good finish. He did remark that Banksia cones are good for hiding sanding marks due to the many seed holes in them. Graham finished it off with EEE and Shellawax. Quick and easy and should sell at markets.

The next item was a card, envelope etc., holder that can be as big or small as you like. For this demo Graham had set up a block of 75 x 75 pine and had made saw cuts, (slightly thicker than the thickness of a business card) halfway through the block and spaced down the block as per the photo.

Placed between centres the block was then turned to round, a spigot created on one end and then mounted in a chuck. Graham then turned the block to a shape that resembled a pig, echidna or bandicoot? Sanded and finished it was parted off. The last step would be to create a flat on the bottom for it to stand on and fit some eyes. A good one Graham and again easy to do, usefull and should sell at markets.

Completed card holder

Following lunch, June McKimmie demonstrated a method of using hotmelt glue and timber wedges to secure a burl on a timber faceplate so that the burl could be turned without the need for a recess, spigot or screws to mount it – leaving the base perfectly natural. June had made a wooden faceplate that had a threaded centre hole that screwed on to the threaded headstock drive. The faceplate was about 210 mm dia. and about 25mm thick.

The burl base was hotmeltglued and roughly centered onthe faceplate , the tailstockbrought up for support and toclamp the burl against thefaceplate. June then glued anumber of timber wedgesbetween the burl and thefaceplate until she wassatisfied there was sufficientsupport.

Once glued in place June began to turn out the inside of the burl to form a bowl. This step was going to be a long one owing to the need to keep the turning speed low, she showed how it would start and then showed us one that had been previously turned by this method. There is an advantage in using this method in that if the piece needs to removed from the lathe for any reason it will still be centered when the faceplate is screwed back on to the lathe. Thanks June for showing us how to do it.
