STAFF SPOTLIGHT: RACHEL ANTICOLI, RN, BSN My name is Rachel Anticoli, and I am pleased to be your school nurse this year. I am here for the students, but also for all the staff members and the community. I have been working in Emergency Room Nursing for 7 years, at trauma centers. I have traveled working in multiple emergency rooms getting as much experience and helping a variety of people from all over the country. I have also done medical volunteer work in Jamaica, Dominican Republic, and India. I am originally from Ohio and took advantage of traveling as an RN. I’ve worked in Florida, Arizona, and now here, where I have learned that California is my home. Also in my journey as an RN and working in the emergency room taking care of very the critically ill, where I liked to think I was “saving lives,” I learned health starts first with a person's knowledge and education. These skills are crucial as they help people know how to take care of themselves and take on the rest of their lives. That is why I decided to change and take on this challenge as a school nurse. Instead of "saving lives," I would like to change lives, and educate and spread the importance of health. Where better to start than with elementary students? I have many goals with the role as school nurse. I am also certified to teach yoga to adults and children. Yoga is not only great for all our health, but it also helps us explore our bodies and emotions, and improves our overall well-being. I have started teaching teachers after school once every week. I would like to have a fundraiser or after school programs involving yoga, health, or whatever other interests you have. I am learning every day as a school nurse and I enjoy working with all of the staff, students, and families. I truly feel every day, I am making a difference, and that is why I became a nurse. Rachel Anticoli, RN, BSN

Dear McKinley Families, 2015 is off to a wonderful start! During our last Family Friday, on January 9th, Mindy Swanson, our enthusiastic and experienced garden teacher, treated us to a presentation. Mr. Mickey and Mindy both teach our students in grades K-3. Fresh organic vegetables from our garden were available for families at our Farm Table in the courtyard! We hope to continue having fresh produce available after Family Fridays with the help of volunteers. Please contact Mindy at [email protected] if you have any questions. We are so fortunate to have this program funded by our Foundation and available for our students! Join us for Family Friday on February 6th from 2:40-3:40! We have had several cases of lice this year. Our nurse, Rachel Anticoli, has sent out helpful information along with our room parents through emails. If a child has been treated for lice at home, he/she must be seen in the nurse’s office prior to returning to class. Continue to check your child’s hair on a regular basis and follow all guidelines if your child has contracted lice. Thank you for your support and efforts to keep these unwanted pests away from our students! For the 2015-16 school year, McKinley’s start time will change from 9:10 to 8:30 a.m. with dismissal at 3:00 p.m. On minimum days, school will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m. This change will help allow for closer alignment between the start times of middle and high schools in the San Diego High Cluster. Primetime will still be available from 6 AM to 6PM. The 2015-16 school year will begin on Tuesday, September 8, 2015. Calendars for the 2015-16 school year can be found on the district’s website at www.sandi.net. Enrollment for 2015-16 If your child is attending McKinley through the CHOICE program, and you want to add brothers or sisters, you must apply online for CHOICE. The deadline for applications to the district is February 15, 2015. Registration for 2015-16 begins on Monday, April 20, 2015. Information for Fifth Grade Students Articulating to Middle School If your student resides in the McKinley School boundaries then your student automatically articulates to Roosevelt. If your student attends McKinley as a CHOICE student, then your student automatically articulates to Roosevelt. You do not have to complete a CHOICE application for Roosevelt. If you have moved out of the McKinley School boundaries but are still attending, then you need to fill out a Choice application to attend Roosevelt. You must apply for the Choice Program on line at www.sandi.net/enrollmentoptions. All applications must be received by February 15th. Please don’t hesitate to call the office if you have any questions at 619-282-7694.

Sincerely, Ms. Julie Ashton-Gray, Principal

KINDNESS MATTERS! “The power of kindness is reflected in

WORDS, ACTIONS and THOUGHTS…

Kindness stems from LOVE which is the only force capable of transforming and enemy into a friend.”
