Easter – a Beginning, not an End On Easter, we have rejoiced in the good news of the resurrection of Christ. As always, our lectionary Scripture lessons on the Sundays between Easter and Pentecost unpack those Good News for us. Our Scripture lessons over the next few weeks will remind us into what the risen Christ’s body was transformed – the church. With St. Paul, we confess and trust that the church, collectively, is the body of

Christ on earth. We are the body of Christ, not because we are so great and awesome and wonderful. Rather, we are the body of Christ, because God has called us to be members of that body and because God sends God’s Holy Spirit into our hearts and minds, enabling us to do and be something that we could not do and be on our own. There are many great metaphors for the church that theologians have given us over the centuries. One of those images that resonates with me is St. Augustine’s classic characteriza-tion of “the church as a hospital for sinners, not a hotel for saints” (which Abigail van Buren much later rephrased as “the church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints”). People are admitted to a hospital not because they are so wonderful, strong, and healthy, but precisely because they are ill and in need of healing. The mission of Christ’s church is to gather sinners to bring healing and wholeness to them and through them, to the world. The mission of Christ’s church is not to preserve ancient traditions, rituals, and doctrines.

The metaphors we use to refer to the Church shape us. Just this week I came across a surprising new metaphor for the church – that of a lending library. UCC pastor Mary Luti suggested that “we might learn....to speak of the church as a company of disciples who pool the gift of faith, inquiring into, testing, grounding, and trusting each other's experiences of God, thereby building a great storehouse of faith small and great, new and seasoned, questioning and serene, from which we all borrow and to which we all lend, generation to generation..." Imagine, if you will, the community of the Church as an enormous Faith Lending Library. We might borrow from the library for years, for decades even, before we ever find anything of our own to contribute to the collection. And that's totally okay. That's what libraries are for. Not for coveting, comparing, or consuming. For lending. For borrowing. For sharing. We need one another. We need one another during times of great happiness and in times of need. We need one another’s faith. At times, our own faith might be weak and doubts might threaten to overwhelm us. During those times, it is a blessing to know that there are sisters and brothers who have been there, sisters and brothers whose faith may have flickered at times, but right now is burning bright and strong. Let us take advantage of one another’s faith, hope, and love. Let us continue to be there for one another. Let us build up one another in faith. And then, let us reach out, beyond the boundaries of our own community and open our arms wide with tangible gestures of love.

What a glorious Easter morning we had a little over a week ago. From the Sunrise Service to the third one at eleven we had beautiful music, wonderful sermons, awesome flowers, and the reminder that Christ Has Risen. Our musical celebration is always amazing. The brass and drums, the bells ringing, the organ or piano playing, the singing by the choir and the congregation all together make this a memorable occasion. At the Sunrise Service it was canned music, but not just a little. It was full organ/orchestral music. I’m sure our

neighbors were awakened to the glorious sounds all morning long. Thanks to our Fellowship Committee we had a wonderful breakfast, and thanks as well to Natalie and her crew for the Easter Egg Hunt. It is interesting hearing about people who have gone to other churches and had just a regular service, not a celebration as we have. As usual Dave Wammer has pulled it all together and we give our thanks to him.

Wednesday nights we welcome Dave Mullen, our former bishop, who will be leading an interesting class combining science and religion. This class will meet in the sanctuary at 6:45 May 1st-22nd. Looking forward to seeing many of you there for this occasion. The regular Wednesday evening program will end on May 8th.

At the May 18th Spring Luncheon ALL are invited to come and hear the director of Lutheran Office of Public Policy, Regina Banks speak about what is going on with Lutherans in our area with regard to social laws. It is a pot luck luncheon, so bring your favorite foods to share. It will be from 12:00 -2:00 pm in the Friend-ship Hall.

Coming up the first Sunday in June will be the Congregational Conversation when we will discuss the budget for the upcoming year. The following Sunday is the Annual Meeting where we will accept the budget, hold elections, and do any other business that involves decisions we all make together. Please plan to attend both of these meetings.

As spring moves ahead we have our usual fluctuations of hot and cool days. We look forward to summer with long days and short nights. Vacations, graduations, weddings, Bar-B-Ques, camping, or swimming are all times to look forward to.

Don’t forget to keep Christ in your life and be Christ-like in your treatment of others as you participate in these activities.

Dear Advent family, I felt so fortunate to be able to get to the 11:00 Easter service. What wonderful music there was! I appreciated the many friends who greeted me and asked about my progress, too. Update: I am really tired of sitting on my family room couch (where I also sleep at night) for 5 1/2 weeks. Tomorrow is my 4-week post-surgery app't and I'm hoping to be given a cast that has a hinged knee so I can start working that leg. I was told that it wouldn't be weight-bearing until 6 weeks, but I want to be as ready as possible. I have felt lifted up by all the prayers and cards my Advent family has sent my way. Special thanks to those of you who have brought meals (Dave is grateful!) and have stopped by to visit or have called me to chat. Please keep the prayers coming for the next many weeks of rehab.

Thank you, Barbara Wammer

Dear Advent,

A big shout-out and many thank yous to the Advent Sanctuary Choir, Joy Bells, Ed Mack, Alex Robul, Bruce Crain, the brass ensemble, Tom Kent and Dave Wammer for the beauty they added to our worship services.

Thank you to the Fellowship Committee for providing us with a beautiful and tasty break-fast. Thank you to Natalie for organizing the Easter Egg Hunt, filling Easter eggs, and lining up young-uns for the twirlie parade.

Thank you, as well, to all other volunteers: the altar guild members, all who helped clean up the sanctuary on Palm Sunday, the Tuesday crew who keeps the campus looking neat and in good repair, all who contributed Easter flowers, filled Easter eggs, folded bulletins, all lectors, assisting ministers, communion assistants, techies, ushers, and greeters.

Thanks, especially, to Richard for keeping our facilities clean during Holy Week and Easter and to Beth for putting together bulletins and scheduling volunteers.

Thank you also to all who decided to spend their Easter worship at Advent in Citrus Heights and to all who brought friends and family members.

By the time I am done with these thank yous, I have thanked almost the entire congregation!

Blessings to all in this Easter season, Pastor Gabi

April 13, 2019 Readings Job 19:1, 25-27; Psalm 23; John 14:1-7 Among many beautiful things that King David wrote in Psalm 23, he assures us that “goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” … All the days of my life” – let’s think for a moment how many days that might be. For a person in their 20’s, that would be at least 7,300 days. For someone in her 50’s, it would be over 18,000 days. If you are hitting your 80’s that would mean over 29,000 days. For George Smithson the final number was almost 33,000 days (or 32,931 days, to be exact). That’s how long he lived on this earth. That’s how long God’s goodness and mercy followed him. Now, think for a moment: over those almost 33k days, was there even one thing that was constant in George’s life, one thing that was present in his life, beginning to end? Sin. Brokenness. Loss. Sadness. For sure. Those are part of the human condition. All the days of our lives are full brokenness and sadness – not only for George, but for each and everyone of us. But what about other things? Fishing? George loved fishing, but nobody – not even the most passionate fisherman – can fish one’s entire life. Camping and boating? George loved camping but at some point of his life the camping came to an end, too. Work? A home? Clothes? Possessions? None of these were there for uninterrupted 33k days. There were changes in George’s life. Moves from California to Oregon and back. Not even family was a constant in his life, be it because his parents and uncle died, or he got married or because his daughter Kathy was born, or because of losses that came later. Not even his entire body was there all the days of his life, because our bodies change – cells die and new cells get formed, skin changes, tissue gets formed, the heart ages. In short: there is nothing, nothing at all that is ever a hundred per cent the same during our entire life. Everything changes. When we think about the days of our lives though, and how things change constantly, the words of Psalm 23 become even more meaningful to us: “Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” It doesn’t say “some days”, it doesn’t say which days or how many years; it doesn’t say in the small print “there are some exceptions though.” The words of that psalm leave no room for doubt: all the days of my life.

It began with George’s baptism. While there are stretches of George’s life that we don’t know much about, those pieces of information seem forever lost, we know that he had been baptized early on in life. Goodness and mercy from the Lord flowed into our hearts from the moment God claims us in our baptism … all the days of our lives. Whether he himself knew it or not, whether those around him knew it or not, George’s faith was nurtured through God’s word and through the sacrament of Holy Communion. Throughout the last few years, come rain or shine, George would arrive early in church on Sunday morning, while Erika was setting up baked goodies. He always sat in the same pew, quietly waiting for the sanctuary to fill and the service to begin. It was important for him to be here and he would even come when Erika was out of the country. He surely will be missed here among the Advent church community and among his family and friends. A small element of his death in which we can find comfort is that his death came suddenly and that he passed away quickly and in full command of all his faculties, not at the end of prolonged illness and disability. With George, we all rest in the knowledge that we, too live in God’s promise of “goodness and mercy all the days of our lives.”

PSALM 23

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack

nothing. 2

He makes me lie down in

green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3

he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths

for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk

through the darkest valley,

I will fear no evil,

for you are with me; your rod and your staff,

they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

6 Surely your goodness and mercy

will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of

the LORD forever.

Great news-Halleluiah the Lord has risen. We serve a living God. The Lord will provide. The all powerful creator.

We have COMPLETED our Walk-in Cooler/Freezer Project. We have persevered for 3 ½ years to bring the vision to completion. This started in the summer of 2015, when the Deacon Board at Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church asked what a dream was for us. We answered to convert a storage room into a cooler/freezer. Then God surprised us when they came back in the fall with a large check for 1/3 of the expected cost.

At that time the vision was cast and we put together a team to see what to do.

What a road we took to see the vision come to completion. God was in it all the time. He grew our ability to have humility, patience, trust and walk with Him. From what we thought was to be $20,000 – $30,000 and 4 months of time grew to over $100,000 and 3 ½ years. But God has worked miracle after miracle. Through the generosity of all of you, all of the costs (always increasing through the years) have been met. Each of the contractors have given discounts to the contracts. And all the concrete (excess of 34 yards) was donated by Teichert Ready Mix Company.

To celebrate the completion of the Project, we are having an Open House and Dedication on Saturday May 4, 2019.

Hours will be from 10:30 – 12:00. All are invited to come and see what, where, why and how

we do the ministry of your food closet. 2019 has continued being a year of growth of clients. We are now serving between 60 – 90 families every day. That represents about 240 individuals. We provide 5 days of food per person which is about 10 pounds. So every day we are handing out over 2400 pounds of food. Again, we are blessed to have all this provided.

We continue needing volunteers. Volunteering can be 1 or 2 days a week, 1 or 2 days a month, or on

a standby substitute list. You can even form your own team of folks and have your own day of the month. If interested and available, please call Judy, our Schedule Coordinator, at (916) 204-8610 or stop on by the food closet to see what is needed

Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Granite Bay

calls new pastor, Derek Harman At a special congregational meeting on Sunday, March 31, the members of Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Granite Bay, voted to call Pastor Derek Harman to serve alongside Pastor Ralph Supper.

Pastor Derek has begun to serve on Easter Sunday, but currently on a part-time basis only. For the first 2-3 months, Pr. Derek will be working 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, so that he can spend time with his wife, Dawn, and sons (Becket and Leo) who are finishing up their school year in Colorado.

Pr. Derek spent seven of his childhood years living with missionary parents in Trinidad and Geneva. After seminary studies in Berkeley, he and his wife moved to Germany for his internship year, where they learned the German language and cultivated their appreciation of living cross-culturally.

Since his ordination in 2007, he served a congregation in Massachusetts, Messiah Lutheran Church in Redwood City, California, and the English-speaking congregation in Bratislava, Slovakia.

From the Desk of Phil Telgenhoff, Saint John's Program for Real Change Board Chair:

It comes with both sadness and gratitude as I write to inform you that Michele Steeb has departed as CEO of Saint John's. She is relocating to Texas where her husband has accepted a new job opportunity. The board of directors is thankful for Michele's 12 years of service and leadership and deeply indebted for the legacy she leaves behind at Saint John's. Today is an emotional one for this organization, but thanks in part to Michele's tireless efforts, we are well positioned to continue meeting the growing needs of the women and children we serve. I know many of you will have questions, so it is important for you to know, first and foremost, that my door is always open. It is equally critical for you to know that the board remains focused on Saint John's mission to support the women and children that walk through our doors every day. To ensure both continuity and our ability to accomplish the goals we have set for this organization, we have named Saint John's COO Marc Cawdrey as our interim CEO. While we have no set timeline on a permanent replacement, we are confident Marc will bring steady leadership and valuable guidance for as long as is needed. Michele will continue as a consultant to Saint John's to develop public and private partnerships for Saint John's. To guarantee the current and future success of Saint John's, we will - and must - continue with our programming, fundraising efforts, staffing and volunteer outreach, and ability to host the signature events you have come to know throughout the years. That is our commitment to you. We cannot get there without your continued support. So today, we thank you for your continued commitment to Saint John's and on behalf of the board, wish the very best for Michele and her family. Warm Regards, Phil

Dear Friends of Saint John's:

"If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans." This is one of my all-time favorite quotes. It is the door through which I arrived at Saint John's, and the door through which I am leaving Saint John's as its CEO.

It was not in my plan to leave Saint John's. Alas, God has a different plan. I very much look forward to working with the Saint John's board/team to continue to support our vision of model replication, including the development of new public and private partnerships...albeit from our new home in Lucas, Texas.

You might be aware that I had served as vice president of Public Affairs for the California Chamber of Commerce prior to coming to Saint John's. It was a job I loved and I had no plans to leave it. God, however, had a different plan.

Over the past twelve years, we have been building Saint John's Program for Real Change into a program that breaks the generational cycle of homelessness by supporting mothers in overcoming barriers such as addiction, violent relationships, criminal behavior, lack of employment, and lack of self-worth. We teach them to be positive parental role models for their families, how to gain and maintain employment and most importantly, how to become the people they were intended to be. I use the word "building" intentionally. Saint John's is about change. Programmatically, we evolve every day to ensure Saint John's is also becoming the best it can be.

It has been one of my life's greatest blessings to serve at Saint John's and as its CEO. Thank you for your incredible financial, volunteer, moral and inspirational support over the years. None of our growth and success would have been possible without you. Please know that your continued sup-port is crucial as this transition unfolds and as we embark upon even bolder adventures.

Sincerely, Michele

ELCA church member and NPR correspondent Martin Kaste responding to sentence prompts provided to him by ELCA staff. I believe that man is not the measure, and the simple fact of existence is evidence of divine will. An issue I’m passionate about is preserving freedom of speech in 21st-century America. I worry about self-censorship growing in journalism, politics and academia. “Thinking out loud” is becoming dangerous in a society that doesn’t do forgiveness anymore. I pray for the strength to tolerate opinions I don’t like. Growing up with my father, Omar Kaste, a Lutheran pastor, meant that on Friday and Saturday nights, the sound of his manual typewriter was relentless. I still have the boxes of my dad’s sermons. He typed a lot of them on the blank sides of unused bulletins.

To me, church is a place where we testify to each other about experiencing God in a world that denies his existence. I first had an interest in becoming a reporter while listening to the BBC World Service on shortwave when we lived in Brazil, where my dad was an American Lutheran Church missionary.

One thing I wish people understood as they read, watch or listen to news coverage is that when a reporter failed to tell the story the way you would prefer, it probably wasn’t out of malice.

My favorite Bible story is the often-overlooked ending to Jonah. It’s a wonderful cautionary tale for journalists. If you’re smugly sitting in the shade, waiting to see someone get punished, watch out: God may be about to send a worm to kill your shade tree.

One of the stories I most enjoyed reporting on was the recovery of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Having my reporting cited in the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2012 United States v. Jones ruling (concerning GPS tracking) was gratifying, even though I imagine only the justices’ law clerks actually read my stuff.

I share my faith by not being apologetic about it. In a secular culture like Seattle, it can be a bit of a jolt (or witness?) when we cheerfully explain to acquaintances why we can’t make that Sunday morning soccer game, or that we try to contribute through our church to causes such as world hunger, sheltering the homeless or receiving a refugee family. It’s important to show that even though mainstream culture now dismisses Christianity, we—their friends and neighbors—are still part of the church.

I’m a Lutheran because my parents and grandparents and great-grandparents were, in Norway and Germany. It’s an accident of history, but I’m glad it happened that way. Plus, the music!

It’s important to me to be involved in my congregation because it reminds me life is not all about me.

People are surprised that I don’t like Twitter, given how many dumb things I’ve tweeted.

To me, grace means freedom.

Most people think everybody else knows what they’re doing.
