Welcome to Trungle Parc for our second encounter of the season with our close

neighbours Penzance, this time in the Cornwall FA Charity Cup quarter-final, with the winners meeting Dobwalls in the semi-final.

Today, we’re expecting a sizeable ‘Bank Holiday’ crowd, and hope you all enjoy the match, the facilities and the hospitality. The clubhouse is open all afternoon, and

singer Boris will be here to entertain you from 2pm.

In the last fortnight we’ve picked up another six League points from sides just below us in the table, with a 3-1 home win over Plymouth Argyle and a 2-1 away

win at St Dennis. The team did especially well against teams with contrasting styles, Argyle’s academy-type play and St Dennis’ full-blooded approach.

On Tuesday we got all the praise but not the result in the League Cup semi-final

against Premier Division leaders Bodmin Town. I felt very proud of a performance full of all the many qualities we have come to associate with Quinny’s team.

Let’s be honest, it was very satisfying beating Penzance by a big score on Boxing Day, but they’ve won their last two games and today I’ve got no doubt they’ll be

out to erase that memory today!

Don’t forget the away League fixture with Penzance, moved from today to accommodate the Charity Cup tie, has been re-scheduled for the last week of the

season on Wednesday 4th May at Penlee Park, with kick off now 6.45pm.

After our two Cup games, we return to League action next Saturday (2nd April) with an important home match against mid-table Bude Town, kick off 3pm.

FOOTBALL ON GOOD FRIDAY

On Good Friday since 1865, in Workington, the game of “Uppies and Downies” has been played. There are no rules, no time limit and no referee. The sole aim is to get the ball into one of two respective goals situated on either side of the town.

On Good Friday 1915, the result of a match between Manchester United and Liverpool – which United won 2-0 to help stave off relegation – was found to have been rigged. A Football League investigation determined that a number of players from both sides had plotted the result in a pub, and made a healthy sum from betting on it. All the major culprits were banned from the game for life.

On Good Friday, 23rd March 1951, Newport County had raced into a commanding 5-1 lead over Norwich City in a top-of-the-table clash in the old Division Three South. However, with 15 minutes left to play, Norwich defender Reg Foulkes injured himself while heading a rain-sodden football and the referee decided there and then to abandon the match altogether. The home fans were not happy, and the ref had to be smuggled out of the ground disguised as an ambulance man. The match was replayed the following month and drawn 1-1. News and views from player-manager Wayne Quinn

Welcome to all the supporters of Mousehole and Penzance (and of course their officials), and any local people who’ve decided to make good use of the Bank

Holiday and come up to Trungle Parc to see what’s going on.

Lots of good things have happened in the last two weeks.

Firstly, we got our revenge on Plymouth Argyle who are the only side to spoil our otherwise perfect League record when they beat us 3-1 at their place in October. A defeat always makes you think hard and we needed a well-thought out game plan. It worked - the lads carried it out impeccably. A 3-1 win, great energy, great goals! There’s no doubt Argyle are a good well-coached footballing side but we made sure

they didn’t translate their possession into goal threats, and when we got our

chances, we took them.

Secondly, we engineered a 2-1 win at St Dennis last Saturday in a predictably tough

encounter, but could and should have won by a much bigger margin.

We’re now beginning to see the effects of injuries as the fixtures come thick and fast. This is where a big-enough squad of capable players really counts, so that we

don’t get weakened by players’ unavailability.

On Tuesday, the lads played the game of their lives in the League Cup semi-final against Bodmin Town. I reckon if we could have got it back to 3-3 we would have won it in extra time. To see the players so disappointed at the end speaks volumes

about their attitude and character. I imagine Bodmin will be glad not to have to play us on a regular basis – their supporters say we’ve given them as good a game

as anyone they’ve faced in the Premier Division.

On Tuesday, we had to throw 18-year old reserve goalkeeper Dom Angove into the deep end as deputy for the injured Steve P-B. He couldn’t have come in for a more high-profile game, but didn’t let us down. The experience will be valuable for him.

As the saying goes, if you’re good enough you’re old enough.

We’ve also signed young Josh Otto, who’s impressed in training. Based in St Ives, he was on the books of Plymouth Argyle and made a few appearances in their SWP

West Division team.

THE CORNWALL (DURNING LAWRENCE) CHARITY CUP

The Charity Cup began when the late Sir Edward Durning Lawrence presented a cup to Truro City FC for charitable purposes. The cup was later handed to the Cornwall County Football Association to organise an annual competition for charity.

Cornwall FA's chosen charity for this season is the Cornish Heart Unit Fund (CHUF).

The CHUF specifically enhances care in the Cardiology Department, which includes Inpatient care - Coronary Care Unit (CCU), Cardiac Investigation Unit (CIU), and Roskear Ward; Outpatient care - Cardiac Unit; and Specialist Nursing Services – Cardiac Rehabilitation Service, Heart Function Service and Chest Pain Services.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity provides gold standard care for Cornwall. Though the NHS pays for patient’s basic care, extra items, such as new technology, comforts and improved facilities brighten the lives of patients and staff as well as aid future diagnosis and treatment. That’s where Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity steps in. It advances care throughout Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust by supporting innovative research, patient and staff amenities, state-of-the-art equipment and specialist training for staff.

Donations help in the following ways: Patient Education: The use of 3-dimensional heart models shows a sequence of healthy to damaged hearts. The nursing team visibly show patients how their heart is improving when they follow treatment regimens.

Diagnosis and Treatment: Portable Echo-Machines and Dinamap Machines provide fast and accurate cardiac images and vitals (like blood oxygen and blood pressure) to improve diagnoses and identify complicated cases in any ward patients are in.

I was lucky enough to win the South West of England Bobby Charlton soccer schools skills test as a youngster, which enabled me to participate at the National Finals held at Old Trafford.

Playing for Falmouth Town against a Plymouth Argyle reserve team which included

Dan Gosling, Ebanks-Blake and Buzsaky.

Worst-ever football moments as a player (for Mousehole):

Losing to St Austell in the 2014 SWP League Cup semi-final. We were dominating the game until Cheesy and Simon took each other out. Ended up losing 3-2!

We also went on to throw away the league that year which was also disappointing.

Best Mousehole game I've played in so far:

Beating Premier Division Tavistock this year in the SWP League Cup quarter-final. Despite being the underdogs I think we matched them in every department, eventually winning 4-2 in extra time. It was a great game to be a part of, proving that we can compete with the league above.

MATCH IMPRESSIONS: BODMIN TOWN 3-2 MOUSEHOLE LEAGUE CUP SEMI FINAL AT ST BLAZEY FC, TUESDAY 22ND MARCH 2016

The Seagulls put up a superb performance at St Blazey on Tuesday evening before exiting the League Cup semi-final thanks to a deflected second-half goal against the run of play.

Already the underdogs, Mousehole had other disadvantages to deal with. The game was played on ‘neutral’ territory, though the distance was 56 miles for us and only 9 miles for them. Ever-present goalkeeper Steve Parker-Billinge was out injured and replaced by second teamer 18-year old Dom Angove. The opponents – top of the Premier Division and

determined to make a clean sweep of League, League Cup and Senior Cup and with only one defeat in all games this season: a highly paid team against a bunch of amateurs!

The Mousehole approach was anything but amateurish. They at least matched Bodmin throughout the game both in teamwork and man-for-man, and for large periods were in

control and looking more accomplished. Anyone dropping in to see this match would have been hard pressed to identify which was the Premier Division side.

Mousehole opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a Mark Vercesi penalty after a deliberate handball to keep out a goal-bound shot. It was an obvious penalty, but referee Steve Annis, surrounded by Bodmin yellow, appeared to produce no card at all, let alone the red we expected.

Bodmin equalised almost immediately from an Adam Carter penalty after Nick Hurst had been unintentionally tripped by Wayne Quinn. It was fast, end-to-end stuff, and Bodmin

took the lead on 18 minutes with a deft lob by Sam Matthews after a flowing move.

Luke Johnson made it an astonishing 2-2 after 24 minutes following goalkeeper Kevin Miller’s grotesque miskick from a through ball. Shortly afterwards, the veteran keeper saved his side’s bacon by getting his leg in the way of a fierce drive by Lewis Caspell.

In the second half we threatened their 18-yard line on numerous occasions with fast

intelligent approach play, but had few clear-cut chances inside the area. Tim Nixon shot over from distance and there were some oohs and aahs during periods of great possession play, but it was Bodmin who stole the lead when Shane Krac’s deflected shot from the edge

of the box wrong-footed Dom Angove and went in off the post. Dom then made a couple of good saves which will do his confidence no harm at all as he gains experience at this level.

Despite the result and the what-might-have-beens, it’s the overall performance that will be remembered, and the fact that Mousehole so nearly became the first ever Division 1 side to reach the league Cup Final.

Bodmin are now a step closer to the treble, but even their supporters said we had made them play badly and they were fortunate to have won.

Independent comments on social media were generous in their praise for The Seagulls, describing the performance as ‘bright’, ‘inventive’, confident’, ‘organised’ and ‘battling’.

Journalist Kevin Marriott’s blog said Bodmin had had “an almighty struggle against an impressive Mousehole”.

MATCH IMPRESSIONS: MOUSEHOLE 3-1 PLYMOUTH ARGYLE RESERVES SATURDAY 12

TH MARCH 2016 AT TRUNGLE PARC, SWP-D1W

Last October, after 11 games unbeaten in the league, plus 3 in the cups including a superb

win over Premier Division Newquay the previous week, we lost our first game 3-1 away at Argyle Reserves on their rural pitch near Newton Abbott. No complaints about the result, but a lot of things to ponder on the improbably long journey back from the East: mainly, how will Quinny set up the team in the return match at Trungle Parc?

Saturday came with much anticipation and many talking points. Argyle had registered their application for promotion, but with ‘ground grading’ issues at Seale-Hayne. Then, on Friday, an official announcement: they would be moving next season to Coach Road, HQ of

Devon FA, which does indeed meet the requirements for Step 6.

Argyle beat rivals St Dennis the previous Saturday, but then managed only a draw at bottom-four side Wadebridge in midweek. So, they arrived in fourth rather than, as expected, second.

We were again without Bradley Wills through a groin injury. We needed the points to prevent Argyle closing the gap at the top with their game in hand and a moderately challenging run-in.

And that’s what happened. A fully committed hard-working well-organised performance against youngsters with elegant ball skills and a quick-passing mentality (who says the English don’t have the talent?). This time we were not caught by surprise. Argyle saw a lot of the ball in midfield, but SPB didn’t, such was the locked-tight defence superbly marshalled by Quinny

and Liam and the men in front of them, while Wade Brown up front made a right nuisance of himself, with Lewis Caspell and Tim Nixon always dangerous. One of the notable features was how the potential threat of Argyle’s two full-time professionals, top scorer Louis Rooney and

winger Callum Hall, was completely nullified.

The Seagulls weathered early pressure to take the lead on 18. Wayne Quinn with a precise free kick, Mark Vercesi with a powerful header low into the corner. Argyle responded by continuing with their attack-minded game, but a couple of good moves

ended with rushed shots that sailed well off-target with defenders challenging.

The second half saw The Seagulls begin to ask more questions of the Argyle defence, one surging run from deep producing a second goal on 63. Tim Nixon cut inside from the left, running at speed past three defenders until blasting the ball home with a right foot shot.

Argyle reduced the deficit immediately, a lofted free kick drifting over to the far post where

Dan Rooney looked to have got a touch with an unchallenged close-range header on 64.

The visitors sensed a chance to get back on terms but it was Mousehole who stepped up a

gear, visiting captain Cory Harvey the busier of the two goalkeepers, saving well from Mark Vercesi, Wade Brown and Lewis Caspell. In the latter stages Argyle pushed more numbers forward and had good spells of possession, but no more than that.

Mousehole had the last word in the second minute of added time when Tim Nixon and

Lewis Caspell passed cleverly through the visitors' defence, setting up Luke Johnson for a firm shot. The ecstatic goal celebration showed how much this win meant to the team.

MATCH IMPRESSIONS: ST DENNIS 1-2 MOUSEHOLE SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 2016, AT BOSCAWEN PARK, SWPL-D1W

Another late goal, a repeat of the senior cup scoreline at the same venue in October, lots of bumps and

bruises, and now two title-chasing rivals dispatched in successive weeks.

This was a great 5 th versus 1st battle, with both sides giving their all. The Seagulls deservedly got the result, though they left it very late after missing a series of excellent second-half chances to seal the

victory. Up until the very end, the game was finely balanced, with St Dennis’ strength and determination matched by Mousehole’s organisation and craft.

We were just getting used to the idea that one point was OK for the first time this season, when The Seagulls snatched victory from the jaws of a draw with a predatory strike from Lewis Caspell.

The Seagulls were without the injured Liam Andrew and started with Bradley Wills on the bench (as

was new signing Josh Otto), with Mark Vercesi dropping back into central defence and Wade Brown spearheading the attack.

The first half was end-to-end, with a yellow card and a couple of near misses for each side, adequately reflected in the 0-0 scoreline.

St Dennis had a great chance to take the lead on 53 minutes but previous week’s hat-trick man Davies shot wide when clean through. Two more yellows followed for the home side as they tried to assert themselves against Mousehole’s passing game.

Then on 60 minutes, a classic away-side break. Steve Burt won the ball with a characteristic tackle in

midfield, set up Tim Nixon sprinting through on the left, and his low cross towards to near post was driven first time high into the net by Lewis Caspell arriving at speed.

The Seagulls immediately had two great attempts, Calron Hall after a clever one-two but thwarted for his first goal of the season by the pink-clad Brett Allen in goal, and Wade Brown poking over in front of

an open goal from a Tim Nixon cross.

Perhaps encouraged by these let-offs, The Saints came close with a penalty-area scramble, and then picked up a fifth yellow, before equalising on 75 through Lee Rickard after a hasty clearance was

returned into the box. The home side looked ‘up for it’ at this stage but SPB and the men in front were relatively untroubled. Rather than consolidating, Mousehole stepped up the tempo and came close five times in quick succession, including a couple of blocked one-on-ones and a superb 20 yard shot

hitting the top of the bar from Lewis Caspell after a Wade Brown lay-off.

Finally, the reward for the team’s adventurous attitude and the fruits of the Nixon-Caspell partnership. On 90+2, Tim Nixon caused havoc with a run and close control near the byeline, and when his sharp cross rebounded off a defender Lewis Caspell turned the ball in instantly underneath the goalkeeper.

On the day, Bude 2-1 Sticker and Plymstock 0-0 Penryn were good results to hear, though Argyle

recovered from their defeat at Trungle Parc to beat Porthleven 1-0…….but we can’t have everything!

Stato Point: Assuming all the ‘games in hand’ among the top 5 were to result in wins, so that everyone had equally played 22 games (the same as Penryn), we’d be on 63 points, with Argyle and St Dennis

on 51, Sticker on 50 and Penryn on 46, all with 10 games to go.

This is of course only one way of looking at it. We’ve still got to play St Dennis again, Sticker and Penryn, all at home, in a very crowded 3-games-a-week April. In the meantime we take a two-week break from league action and leave it to the others to see what they can do.

NOTES ABOUT PENZANCE AFC

The programme for our League encounter three months ago on Boxing Day included a summary of the club’s history, so we won’t repeat that here. Since their 7-0 defeat at Trungle Parc on Boxing Day, Penzance have played six League games, with a perfectly symmetrical set of results: Won 2, Drawn 2, Lost 2. Their wins have come in the last two matches: 2-1 at home against mid-table Bude Town, and a spectacular 5-0 victory last Saturday away at eleventh-place Dobwalls. Before that they had lost two consecutive games, 5-1 away at high-flying Penryn Athletic and 3-2 at home to near-bottom Millbrook. The two draws came at home, 1-1 against Porthleven and 2-2 against Wendron United. The Magpies are now in 9th position in the table, having played 21 League games with 8 wins, 4 draws and 9 defeats and scoring 41 goals while conceding 57. After today they face 5 away games in a row in 21 days (Sticker, Liskeard, Bude, Plymstock and Wadebridge). Then there’s a fixture of particular interest to us - home against Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday 26th April (6:30 kick off). The hectic finale to the season consists of Holsworthy (away) and Wadebridge (home), followed by the return League fixture with us at Penlee Park (note: 6:45 kick off), postponed from today because of the Charity Cup tie. Penzance then round off the season with a home matches against Plymstock on Saturday 7th May, and then 23 hours later against Dobwalls on Sunday 8th (2pm). As with other local teams, Penzance have been hit hard with fixture congestion following weather-related postponements, with the added problem of the breakdown of their floodlights, ruling out floodlit fixtures for the rest of the season.
