RHOA SPRING CLEANUP EVENT By Larry Hugo, District 12 Director & Cleanup Chairman

The Ranch CLEANUP event on May 18, 2019 went really well. It was a warm and beautiful day, with no rain. Our Ranch residents managed to completely fill all the large roll-off dumpsters in approximately four hours with yard trimmings and household waste.

Many of you took advantage of the Dumpsters and now have more room in your garages/homes. Many also helped us all by adding a little beautification to our Ranch neighborhood that we all care about and like to see kept well maintained. Thank you and keep up the good work.

The Cleanup morning at the various Dumpster Stations started with coffee, water and breakfast burritos graciously provided by Jeff Moon of Hanu Reddy Realty. THANK YOU, JEFF.

The 36th annual National Night Out (NNO), co-hosted by the Ranch Homeowners Association and the Irvine Police Department, is coming to the Ranch Park on Tuesday, August 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.

NNO is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime

efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

There will be a Dessert Truck, games and prizes for the kids. Raffle tickets will be given out for shelf-stable food donations for Families Forward. Every item you bring earns a ticket; for example, four items, four tickets.

The Irvine Police Department and Orange County Fire Authority personnel will have emergency vehicles on display for kids and adults to enjoy. Spend the evening in the Ranch Park with your neighbors and our community organization representatives.

National Project Coordinator Matt Peskin says, “This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation. On NNO, we invite neighborhoods nationwide to join us in Giving Crime & Drugs A Going Away Party.”

SPRING CLEANUP (…continued) Prior to Saturday morning we hope some of

you also took advantage of the recent Garage Sale on sponsored by Russ Hansen of Century 21 and the Great Exchange Free Friday (May 17) to pass on, for FREE, some still good but not needed items.

RHOA President Linda Wallace (right) and Director Jay Baumler and his daughter Katie help at the Strasbourg Station and were talking to our good friend and past director Janice Robinson. Although Janice has sold her Ranch home, we were happy to find out that she was visiting in the region while she and her husband build a new home. She kindly offered to assist our Spring Cleanup. A few days earlier, Jay and his daughter helped Cleanup Chair Larry Hugo put up the cones and caution tape before the event to allow space for the dumpsters.

We all appreciate those of you who took the time to help clean up and beautify our Ranch neighborhood.

When you can, please help your neighbors and/or encourage them to maintain their homes and our neighborhood. Let’s all do what we can to keep our homes and property looking nice. This also helps to keep up property values for all.

For anyone who may have forgotten, the “Cleanup/Dumpster Day” program is sponsored by your RHOA (Ranch Homeowners and Renters Association) for paid members (annual dues only $30 which is generally less than one third the cost of just one trip to the dump) and is conducted each spring and fall. It is always a fun day to get out into the sun, clean up areas we may have been neglecting, and meet and perhaps help some of your neighbors while either volunteering or dropping off some household waste or old treasures not needed anymore.

Directors Ramon Lugo, Larry Hugo, and Nancy McDevitt join Jeff Moon in enjoying the morning at the Cherbourg Station.

At this Cleanup day we had to cut back on the number of Dumpsters due to fewer paid memberships. If this trend of fewer memberships continues we may well have to reduce other services. Our costs are rising, and we need to maintain memberships to continue the level of services.

…continued on page 12

Although Linda Wallace and Director Reena Bhargava are prepared for rain we were fortunate that it did not rain on our Parade (Spring Cleanup day.)

SOCIAL SECURITY IMPOSTOR SCAM: IT'S GROWING, AND THIS IS HOW IT WORKS

To scammers, your Social Security number is a gold-plated and diamond-encrusted asset, and now they have a new way to try to steal yours and get paid. Consumer advocates are raising an alert about a twist to an old impostor phone scam. It's called the "Social Security impostor scam." A blog at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently wrote: "In the shady world of government, the SSA scam may be the new IRS scam."

Here's how it works:

You get a call with a warning that your Social Security number has been suspended because of suspicious activity or because it's been used in a crime. You are asked to confirm your number or told you need to withdraw money from the bank and buy gift cards.

The phone call may be a robocaller with a message to "press 1" to speak with a "support representative" from the government to reactivate your Social Security number. The scammers use technology to spoof your Caller ID to make it look like the Social Security Administration is really calling.

In the last 12 months, people filed more than 76,000 complaints about Social Security impostors, reporting $19 million in losses. The median reported loss last year was $1,500, the FTC said.

People are asked to give up the personal identification numbers (PINs) on the back of gift cards or use virtual currencies like Bitcoin to pay. (According to the FTC's consumer alert, people withdrew money and fed cash into Bitcoin automatic teller machines.)

After handing over the gift card numbers to the "Social Security office," one consumer interviewed by Fraud.org was told he would receive a refund equal to the amount he paid to unfreeze his account from the Federal

Reserve. Of course, the refund never came, and the man lost nearly $20,000.

"One scammer will try a new twist on an old scam or try one new wrinkle that gets them more money," said John Breyault, vice president of public policy, telecommunications and fraud with the National Consumers League. "Scammers like to keep up with the Joneses when it comes to using the latest techniques to defraud consumers."

The scammers can be clever. With numerous data breaches that have hit corporate America, fraudsters may already have accurate personal information about you, including your real Social Security number, Breyault said. The information is used to build trust and make the call seem more legitimate, he added.

According to Fraud.org and the FTC, here are some important things to remember:

Don't trust your phone's caller ID. Scammers can make it look as if the Social Security Administration is calling and even use the agency's real number.

Don't give your Social Security number, other personal information, to a caller on the phone.

Social Security will never suspend your number, according to Fraud.org. If anyone tells you something different, you're being scammed.

Social Security will never call you and demand money. No government agency will demand you pay something using gift cards or Bitcoin either.

If you have a question, check with the real Social Security Administration. The administration will never contact you out of the blue. The agency's number is 1-800-772-1213.

Talk about the scam with friends, family and neighbors. Report government impostor scams to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

RANCH LOSES WWII VETERAN Paul Rowe, 93, passed away on April 13,

2019 at his home in The Ranch. He was born

November 10, 1925 in Bremen, Indiana and was married to Patricia Ruth Minnick, who survives him.

Paul lived most of his life in Bremen, until he and Patricia moved to Irvine seven years ago to live their daughter, Suellen.

Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps when he was 17 years old and entered active duty in January 1944.

Serving as a “top gunner” on a B-29 “Super Fortress” bomber, he flew 28 missions in the China/Burma/India and South Pacific theatres during WWII, where he earned several medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. After flying air support over the USS Missouri when Japan surrendered, Paul was honorably discharged, achieving the rank of Technical Sergeant,

A lifetime member of the VFW, Paul was active in Bremen politics, the Lions Club and the American Legion. He served in leadership roles in his church, as well as part of the Hand Bell Choir. He enjoyed fishing, golf, playing bridge, reading and watching sports, especially his Cubbies.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the First United Church of Christ in Bremen, Indiana, the Bremen Public Library or the Connecticut Aeronautical Historical Association, Inc. (58th Bomb Wing Memorial). Condolences may be sent to Paul’s family at 5142 Skinner.

INVASIVE SHOT HOLE BORER: AN EPIDEMIC THREAT TO OUR TREES

The Invasive Shot Hole Borer (ISHB), an exotic and invasive ambrosia beetle, is attacking multiple tree species in southern California.

Together, the ISHB have potential to devastate the urban forest.

Although the ISHB variety Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB) has been found from Oceanside to Ventura, it has reached epidemic levels in the Orange County Area.

The beetles, smaller than a sesame seed, “mate with each other, leave the tunnels, crawl up the tree and make new tunnels and the cycle repeats itself,” said Mark Hoddle, an entomologist and biological control specialist who studies invasive species at UC Riverside. Although ISHB attack hundreds of species of trees, there are 64 confirmed species in which the beetles can successfully grow their fungus and complete their life cycle. Susceptible varieties include many common landscape trees like sycamores, oaks, willows, cottonwoods and box elder (among many others), commercial avocado groves, and native species in urban and wildland environments.

The good news is there are ongoing efforts to stop the spread, and the disease is manageable when caught early.

Correct identification of the pest is the first step for a successful eradication program. When the beetles excavate their galleries (or tunnels) in the trees they make perfectly round small holes, 0.8 mm wide, each roughly the size of the tip of a medium ballpoint pen.

Each species of tree can exhibit different symptoms. Dead or wilting branches, called dieback, can be signs of a severe infestation. White powdery exudate called “sugar volcanoes” are common in avocado trees (see photo). Other symptoms include, wet staining, gumming, or frass (boring dust).

The bark of one of nearly a dozen sycamore trees at Koch Park in Placentia shows the small holes and weeping sap, signs of infection by the PSHB

If symptoms are found, please contact one of the following:

SPRING CLEANUP (…continued)

Oftentimes we just simply forget to send in our payment. So, please remind your neighbors of the many RHOA benefits provided by your $30 per year membership.

We do not know of any other similar type RHOAs that provides as much value in its many benefits and services for such low Association membership dues.

We are able do this because of the extraordinary volunteer work by many of your directors and neighbors.

THANK YOU again to all the Volunteers, including the following, for their help with the Dumpsters:

Ramon Lugo Nancy McDevitt Peggy Evans Larry Anderson Leroy and Mackayla Wong Linda Wallace Reena Bhargava Jay Baumler Jeri Carey Janice Robinson Jeff Moon

When you pass them in the neighborhood please take a moment to thank them for volunteering their time and effort.

Neighbors Pat Walsh, Chris Browning, Director Peggy

Evans and Sally Riley pose for a picture at the Norris

Station. It was a perfect day for chatting and enjoying

the morning with your friends and neighbors.

Director Jeff Glass, Jeff Moon of Hanu Reddy Realty

and Director Larry Hugo at the Norris Station. Also

seen is a very nice and helpful neighbor who is seen

climbing the side of the dumpster to help keep items

below the top of the dumpster.

THANK YOU to Jeff Moon of Hanu Reddy Realty for providing breakfast and refreshments for our volunteers. As noted earlier that really helped us start the day. And Jeff also helped many neighbors and the Station Monitors load items into the bins in an effective fashion to allow greater use of the dumpsters.

Also thank you to Russ Hansen for sponsoring the Garage Sale that normally precedes the Cleanup day by a week or two. It went well.

BIG thank you to Andrew Park for providing two good condition bicycles for local needy families.

RHOA Director Jeri Cary is holding the “Event Presented by your RHOA” sign while helping out at the Cherbourg Station on the second shift.

JUNE 2019 Ranch Roundup 13

Do you know what makes the Irvine “Ranch” Neighborhood Special?

It’s the friends and neighbors above, and many others, who take that extra step, go that extra mile, to help someone load or unload their truck or car, sweep or rake their yard, help with community events even though they are busy, or just get out and say hello and talk to their neighbors. Let’s all try to help each other out, volunteer for events, and enrich our lives and those of others. That’s what makes our Irvine Ranch neighbors and neighborhood special.

So, the final THANK YOU goes to all of you who helped in some way to clean up our Ranch neighborhood or helped others.

These signs are reminding us that we all

need to drive slowly on our RANCH streets and especially so when events like Cleanup days are in process.

It is unfortunate that even with the SLOW signs some people drove at a very fast speed past the area. Our RANCH streets are posted at 25 MPH. Please be mindful of this and also ask your spouse, neighbor, kids and guests to PLEASE SLOW DOWN even more when people are in or near the street.

It could prevent an injury or a worse situation from happening. Someone could step out into your path and several lives might be changed forever.

Thanks for being extra careful in the Ranch.

Director Paula Miller and her husband Kyle (left),

Director Larry Anderson and past director and Fourth of

July Co-Chairman Leroy Wong are helping at the

Rochelle Station. Leroy’s wife Mackayla, Monitor and

Fourth of July Chairman, has just stepped away and left

these four in charge of the station. Paula reminds us all

to drive slowly near the dumpsters. Great advice.

DID YOU MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE THE DUMPSTERS? HERE’S SOME IMPORTANT INFO:

If you missed out on the last Dumpster Day and cannot wait until the next event to be conducted (Spring/Fall), here are some helpful and/or close by options:

Resident Tom Bandel, Jeff Moon and Director Larry Hugo at the Norris Station. It is so nice to see so many of our friends on Cleanup Day.

The Waste Management local reclamation center located at 16122 Construction Circle here in Irvine will take most anything except hazardous waste material for a fee. This one-time use fee is usually much higher than our annual membership fee, so your $30 dues can pay for themselves!

sure which.
