What is COVID-19?
2019 Coronavirus Disease
A new coronavirus that was firsttransmitted to humans in Wuhan,China in December 2019.

The WHO has declared COVID-19 a global outbreak (pandemic)on the 12 March 2020

How long is the ‘incubation’ period for COVID-19The “incubation period” meansthe time between catching thevirus and beginning to havesymptoms of the disease.
Best estimates of theincubation period for COVID-19ranges from 1-14 days, mostcommonly around five days.

• Aches and pains• Nasal congestion• Runny noses• Sore throat• Diarrhoea

4 out of 5 people infected with COVID-19 will get only mild symptoms-
Like sore throat, cough and fever

That means 80% have mild illness only

And, some people have the virus and don’t feel unwell

A small number of people may become very sick from coronavirus
We call this Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)Pneumonia (severe lung infection) and kidney failure

Current statistics suggest about 1 in 6 people may get very sick and to be hospitalised

But most people will make a full recovery

Who are people at most risk of getting very sick?
Health Workers People over the age of 55 People with chronic illnesse.g. heart disease, auto-immune

COVID-19 spreads primarily from person to personThe virus is in small liquiddroplets from the nose or mouth.
The virus spreads when aninfected person exhales orcoughs.
You can catch these droplets ifyou stand too close to someonethat is sick with coronavirus.
The virus can also be left on objects and surfacesSo if you touch something contaminatedand then touch your face or another’sface, you might fall ill.

There is a worldwide shortage ofmasks. We need masks to protectour frontline health workers likedoctors, ambulance officers andnurses.

We suggest that P2 masksshould only be used byhealth workers becausethey are at greater risk.

If someone is coughing, what should I do?
• Maintain a distance ofat least 1 metres frompeople who are coughingor sneezing.
• We recommend 2 metres

How long does the virus survive on surfaces?
• It is not certain.• It might live on surfaces for a few
hours or up to a few days.--------• Regularly clean surfaces with simple
disinfectant.• Clean your hands with alcohol-based
hand rub or soap and water

IF YOU GET SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19
• Stay home• Don’t go into public areas– you might spread thevirus to other people
• Treat your symptoms

If you get symptoms of COVID-19you must rest at home for 14 days
You should not go into public places because you might spread your germs to other people who are not sick.
What should I do if I am sick? Drink plenty of water
Consider taking paracetamol to ease a fever or sore throat
Paracetamol reduces symptoms, tasol. It does not make you better.
Seek medical advice
Is there anything I should not do?

COVID-19 does not appear to be airborne.Studies to date suggest that the virus that causes COVID-19 ismainly transmitted through contact with respiratory dropletsrather than through the air. The best thing you can do is keep atleast one metre from someone who is coughing.
