As Canada’s largest and most comprehensive universitydance program, we have a dual focus on developingcritical/creative minds and bodies. Our integratedundergraduate curriculum features courses in contemporaryand modern dance, fundamentals of physical practice,production, and dance history and theory. The BFA studioprogram offers you concentrations in performance/choreography and dance education. The BA program centreson cross-cultural dance studies, with a studio component in acontemporary world dance form. Each year, we spotlightstudent talent in public presentations such as DanceInnovations, York Dances! and the showcase concert of theYork Dance Ensemble.

At the graduate level, our MFA program focuses on studio-based research in contemporary choreography anddance dramaturgy within diverse theatrical dance cultures and contexts. Our MA and PhD programs support advancedscholarly research in dance history, ethnography andeducation.

DesignBachelor of Design — BDes Specialized HonoursMaster of Design — MDes

The York/Sheridan Joint Program in Design (BDes Hons) isrecognized throughout North America and beyond for itsacademic and professional excellence. We offer practicaleducation in visual communication, interactive andinformation design integrated with studies in designhistory and theory, research practice and designmanagement. Drawing on the resources of two leadingdesign schools, our students work in state-of-the-artdigital facilities that mirror the contemporary industrysetting. For upper-year undergrads, a summer internshipwith an established design firm opens doors toprofessional contacts and real-world experience. Theannual year-end design show produced by the graduatingclass features external portfolio reviews and networkingopportunities. The success of our students in regional,national and international competitions each year is aharbinger of their professional success after graduation.

The York MDes program focuses on advanced, practice-based research in the cultural, social, cognitive andtechnological dimensions of communication, informationand interaction design, research methodology, and designhistory, theory and criticism.

York is in the vanguard of music education for ourglobalized world. Our undergraduate program helps youdevelop the knowledge and skills to research, interpret andcreate music in a variety of styles and settings. Courses incomposition and arranging, music media and technology,musicianship and pedagogy are integrated with studies inmusic theory and history. Performance studies options includejazz, folk, improvisation, digital and popular music, a widerange of world music traditions, and contemporary andtraditional western classical music. Small ensemble work,clinics and master classes foster the development of a solidvocal and instrumental technique. Large ensembles such as theYork U Symphony, Jazz and Wind Orchestras and Gospel,Chamber and Jazz Choirs extend your training andperformance opportunities. Our graduate programs supportadvanced studies in research areas such as composition,musicology and ethnomusicology, performance, jazz, andpopular music. Students have access to excellent studiofacilities including more than 40 individual practice rooms,a recital hall, recording studio and extensive research resourcesincluding field collections, scores and recordings. We showcasethe creative work of our students and faculty in more than100 public concerts each season.

York’s theatre program covers all aspects of “doing theatre”, taught by practicingprofessionals. In our BA program, you’ll find courses in dramatic literature, theatrehistory, theory, playwriting, dramaturgy and devised theatre. Our BFA program (entry insecond year) offers hands-on training in acting and stage design/production. Theatre @York’s annual season of classical and contemporary plays is a public platform for studentcreativity. Students from all levels and areas of study are involved in these productions —backstage, onstage and front-of-house. Facilities and resources to support your workinclude specialized workshops, design and rehearsal studios, a black box performancestudio and proscenium theatre. We’re currently the home of the editorial offices of thejournals Canadian Theatre Review and Theatre Research in Canada.

Our MFA program for advanced theatre artists offers intensive conservatory training inacting, directing and design for performing arts. The graduate programs in Theatre &Performance Studies focus on research in theatre, performance and cultural politics.Our location in Toronto, one of the English-speaking world’s leading theatre centres,enriches the experience for our students.

York’s Department of Film is a leading centre forprofessional education in the field. Our BFA programsoffer you intensive, hands-on training in filmproduction — directing, producing, cinematography,editing, sound design — and screenwriting for fiction,documentary and alternative projects. Our BA programfocuses on film history, theory and criticism, includingstudies in Canadian, international, documentary andalternative cinema. Our graduate programs supportadvanced studies that leverage the synergies betweencreative and scholarly research in all these areas, aswell as augmented reality and 3D stereoscopy.Students at all levels have access to premierproduction, post-production, screening and researchfacilities and technical support. Our internship programfor upper-year undergrads gives you the opportunityto gain work experience and a foothold in the industryprior to graduation. Are you intrigued by the potential of new andemerging technologies, the convergence of art andscience, the opportunities and impacts of globaldigital culture? Drawing on the strengths of theFaculty of Fine Arts and Lassonde School ofEngineering, our Digital Media program fosters thecreative, technical and analytical skills thisburgeoning field demands.

The focus is on code and programming as tools forcreative expression. As a Digital Media student, youtake hands-on courses in digital art-making alongsidemath, computer science, natural science andcommunications. Through studio and lab work,complemented by studies in analytic and criticalmethodologies, you learn how to use programming tocreate experiences that integrate digital media inmyriad forms: mobile apps, games, 3D and immersiveenvironments, data visualization, sound and videoprocessing, human-computer interaction, interactiveperformance, and more. As Canada’s largest and most comprehensive universitydance program, we have a dual focus on developingcritical/creative minds and bodies. Our integratedundergraduate curriculum features courses in contemporaryand modern dance, fundamentals of physical practice,production, and dance history and theory. The BFA studioprogram offers you concentrations in performance/choreography and dance education. The BA program centreson cross-cultural dance studies, with a studio component in acontemporary world dance form. The York/Sheridan Joint Program in Design (BDes Hons) isrecognized throughout North America and beyond for itsacademic and professional excellence. We offer practicaleducation in visual communication, interactive andinformation design integrated with studies in designhistory and theory, research practice and designmanagement. Drawing on the resources of two leadingdesign schools, our students work in state-of-the-artdigital facilities that mirror the contemporary industrysetting. For upper-year undergrads, a summer internshipwith an established design firm opens doors toprofessional contacts and real-world experience. Theannual year-end design show produced by the graduatingclass features external portfolio reviews and networkingopportunities. The success of our students in regional,national and international competitions each year is aharbinger of their professional success after graduation.

York is in the vanguard of music education for ourglobalized world. Our undergraduate program helps youdevelop the knowledge and skills to research, interpret andcreate music in a variety of styles and settings. Courses incomposition and arranging, music media and technology,musicianship and pedagogy are integrated with studies inmusic theory and history. Performance studies options includejazz, folk, improvisation, digital and popular music, a widerange of world music traditions, and contemporary andtraditional western classical music. Small ensemble work,clinics and master classes foster the development of a solidvocal and instrumental technique. Large ensembles such as theYork U Symphony, Jazz and Wind Orchestras and Gospel,Chamber and Jazz Choirs extend your training andperformance opportunities. Our graduate programs supportadvanced studies in research areas such as composition,musicology and ethnomusicology, performance, jazz, andpopular music. Students have access to excellent studiofacilities including more than 40 individual practice rooms,a recital hall, recording studio and extensive research resourcesincluding field collections, scores and recordings. York’s theatre program covers all aspects of “doing theatre”, taught by practicingprofessionals. In our BA program, you’ll find courses in dramatic literature, theatrehistory, theory, playwriting, dramaturgy and devised theatre. Our BFA program (entry insecond year) offers hands-on training in acting and stage design/production. Theatre @York’s annual season of classical and contemporary plays is a public platform for studentcreativity. Students from all levels and areas of study are involved in these productions —backstage, onstage and front-of-house. Facilities and resources to support your workinclude specialized workshops, design and rehearsal studios, a black box performancestudio and proscenium theatre. We’re currently the home of the editorial offices of thejournals Canadian Theatre Review and Theatre Research in Canada.

Our MFA program for advanced theatre artists offers intensive conservatory training inacting, directing and design for performing arts. Are you intrigued by the potential of new andemerging technologies, the convergence of art andscience, the opportunities and impacts of globaldigital culture? Drawing on the strengths of theFaculty of Fine Arts and Lassonde School ofEngineering, our Digital Media program fosters thecreative, technical and analytical skills thisburgeoning field demands.

The focus is on code and programming as tools forcreative expression. As a Digital Media student, youtake hands-on courses in digital art-making alongsidemath, computer science, natural science andcommunications.
