This is how you use a Smith chart to combine two parallel impedances. First, you transform the load impedance into an admittance, then it is possible to add the admittance. If the admittance is purely reactive, you will move along the green dashed line. A transform of the 1 + jX line into the admittance domain is shown in black, and may be a destination used for determining the amount of reactive admittance to add such that when transformed back into the impdance domain, a series impedance can be included to transform to the center of the Smith chart.

This is how you use a Smith chart to combine two series impedances. The load is shown at ZL = 0.5 - j0.2. A series impdance would move along the green dashed line. If it was desired to combine this with a parallel impedance, it would be desired to add sufficient series impedance to land on the 1 + jY circle (shown in black), such that when transformed, it would be on the right-hand side of the Smith chart.
