PRINCIPAL’S REPORT I would like to extend a warm welcome to Miss Stephanie Jones, Relieving Deputy Principal. Miss Jones has recently been a DP Instructional Leader at Lalor Park PS. Miss Jones will be working alongside Mrs Baker and Mr Rimmer. Janmashthmi Celebrations Mrs Weal and I were thrilled to be included in the Janmashthmi Celebrations at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Rosehill last Monday 3 September. The festival of Janmashtami commemorates the birthday of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krisha is revered for his wisdom about how to live life on Earth. Ridges Festival of the Arts Riverbank PS will be performing, along with Parklea PS, Schofields PS, Kellyville Ridge PS, Quakers Hill East PS, Glenwood HS, The Ponds HS and The Ponds School at the Hillsong Convention Centre on Thursday 18 October 2018 from 6pm. Concert tickets will go on sale next week. EVERYONE IS WELCOME to come along and support Riverbank. It is a wonderful evening highlighting many talents from local schools. Our students are very excited to be performing in front of an audience of over 1000. Our choir will once again perform with students from The Ponds School. Premier’s Debating Competition Last Tuesday our Year 6 Premier's Debating team competed against Kurmond Public School in a zone play off for a place in the Regional Finals. Both teams entered the compettion undefeated, which made for a very exciting round. The topic was 'The government should provide school kids with a pass that grants free entry to all sporting events and facilities.' Riverbank lost the toss and argued the negative. After some thoughtful arguments and serious rebuttals from both sides, the adjudicator declared Riverbank a place in the finals. Well done Yana, Michael, Zeynep and Karan! A terrific win!

All four students performed brilliantly! Year 5 Camp Our Year 5 students will be heading off to Broken Bay on Monday 24 September. REPORT FROM OUR DEPUTY PRINCIPALS Transition to summer uniform Previously we have commenced the transition to summer uniform from Week 9, however, due to the forecast warmer weather students may now wear either their summer or winter uniform for the remainder of this term. From Term 4 all students will wear summer uniform. Uniform policy We pride ourselves on our uniform and would appreciate it if you could ensure that your child is wearing the correct clothing every day. Should you not have the correct items please place an order with our supplier. The instructions for how to do this can be found at the end of this newsletter and on our website. School Photos School photos will be taken Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Term 4 Week 2 for class, portrait, sport and extra curricular activities. An envelope with your child’s name will be sent home before the end of term with the packages available for purchase printed on them as well as a note outlining which day your child’s class photo’s will be taken. Please do not return these envelopes to the office; they are to be presented on the day of the photos to the photographers. You will not be able to purchase photos without this envelope. Children MUST wear full school uniform on the day of their photo’s. Sibling photographs are also being taken. The envelopes for these are available in the office upon request. SMS Absences Next term we will introduce an SMS alert system if your child has not turned up to school. If your child is absent from school you will receive an SMS stating this fact. You will be able to message back a response/reason for their absence using this service. Please send a separate message for each child that is absent, ensuring that you include their name. You CANNOT ring the number, but you are able to use your phone’s messaging service to respond. At present, we are endeavoring to send messages by mid-morning to ensure it is functioning properly.

Tell Them From Me Surveys Our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our students in Years 4-6 participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and timely feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are at school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. We would like to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 27 August and 26 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Our school will also be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Running this survey will help our school understand parents and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.   The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between late August and October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated. The link to access the survey is: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/riverbank Mrs Baker, Miss Jones and Mr Rimmer

Restorative Practices Restorative Practices form the relational basis for Quality Teaching and Learning at Riverbank Public School. Our Restorative Practice Framework, because of its explicit nature, offers a common language and practice capable of fostering healthy relationships. Student achievement is enhanced through Restorative values being embedded as a way of being and learning together. Our approach fosters individual responsibility and helps develop empathy. Inappropriate behaviour or choices and mistakes can be viewed as an opportunity for insight, learning and development in both the academic and social domains. The explicit framework is inextricably linked to the Quality Teaching Framework and includes the following sets of questions to be asked by children, teachers and parents. When Things Go Wrong…..When Someone Has Been Hurt • What happened? • What were you thinking of at the time? • What have you thought about since? • Who has been affected by what you have done? In what way? • What do you think you may do to make things right? • What did you think when you realised what happened? • What impact has this incident had on you and others? • What has been the hardest thing for you? • What do you think needs to happen to make things right?

The process is empowering as it takes students from the past to the present and gives them hope for the future. It empowers them to make things right and heal any harm that has been done. A restorative classroom setting is one that values dialogue through an inclusive approach where everyone expects to be heard and through this participatory process, students develop the capacity to learn that emotions are an important and legitimate expression of healthy dialogue. This process helps students to deal with conflict, tensions and difference in respectful ways that engender trust and foster healthy relationships.

RPS Sport Update PSSA Results Week 6 Round 13 Newcombe Ball Riverbank PS vs Kellyville Ridge PS Juniors Lost Team Player – Rajvir Best and Fairest - Sujaan Seniors Lost Team Player – Swatthi Best and Fairest - Jaskirit What an awesome way to end our Winter PSSA season! This week we versed Kellyville Ridge. They were a fantastic team to meet and play against! Although we were not able to win our final games, both of our teams gave it their best shot, and we had so much fun in our last games. It has been great to play together throughout this PSSA season. We have improved skills in newcombe ball and developed our sportsmanship skills. We have learnt to create stronger relationships between all of the players on the team and our coaches. We will surely miss playing together. We will be back, better than ever next year! Soccer - Girls Riverbank PS vs Ironbark Ridge PS Juniors Lost 1-0 Team Player – Mikaela Best and Fairest – Jocelyn Seniors Draw 0-0 Team Player – Kiera Best and Fairest – Maya Such a close match between Riverbank and Ironbark Ridge this week, as both games played were very intense and full of action! The juniors played in a very fair and competitive manner as both sides had multiple chances to score goals, but in the final minutes of the second half Ironbark Ridge scored an amazing goal to end off the game! The seniors were up against a team with extremely strong offensive capabilities, as there was an opportunity for 3 shots in a span of 15 seconds! Luckily, the ball ended up bouncing off the side post of the goals before Maya held onto the ball and cleared Ironbark Ridge’s opportunity. In the end, it was a fair and extremely intense game coming to 0-0! Well done girls!

Soccer – Boys Riverbank PS vs Oakville PS Juniors Lost 0-2 Seniors Draw 2-2 It was a spectacular last game from both teams. The Juniors unfortunately lost their last game but not without a solid effort. They dominated the possession most of the game and were unlucky not to capitalise on their chances. I could tell in their faces that they had fun and they are going to be hungry next year. The Seniors also dominated their game with possession and passing. They utilised the half size field to their advantage and got ahead early. The opposition managed to score one back in the second half. Out of nothing Imran scored a beautiful goal, slotting it in the bottom corner. With seconds to go they managed to get a free kick. This halted the game after the student from the other team bombed it straight in the top corner out of reach from Gurjot. Thank you boys for a wonderful season and to the parents for all your support coming down to watch each Friday morning. Good luck to all the Year 6’s with your soccer careers in the future. I know some of you will become superstars. Signing out for another season Mr T. Rugby League Riverbank PS vs Rouse Hill PS Juniors Lost Team Player – Tyrell Best and Fairest – Roop & Jake Seniors Forfeit A fantastic effort by both teams today! Juniors were creative with their playmaking and tried a variety of different tactics. Some crafty footwork by Viraj lead to a great try, which Riley was able to convert with ease. Netball Riverbank PS vs Rouse Hill PS Juniors Lost 0-32 Team Player – Khishdeep Best and Fairest – Nandana Seniors Lost 11-17 Team Player – Tahli & Chanel Best and Fairest – Jorja A fantastic performance by the Junior side to finish Riverbank’s inaugural Rugby League PSSA season. As a coach, I was very proud to see the team run out and play some great football. It was an exciting match with some excellent runs and support plays. The team has been rehearsing their

‘draw and pass’ technique for some time and it was very rewarding to see it in action as they were able to offload the ball to teammates and gain some extra ground. Tyrell scored two great tries using some crafty footwork off the back of some skillful passing along the backline. Unfortunately, it was our defense that proved to be the difference in the final result. Seniors enjoyed their last week by playing a friendly match and reflecting on the fun they have had over the season. Well done to both teams on the immense improvements you have shown throughout the season. Keep working hard and start looking forward to next season. Bring it on! A big thank you to all of the parents and NRL Development officers who come out each Friday to support our teams! Summer PSSA Summer PSSA has returned with the first round on Friday 14 September. Students must return their note and payment before they can participate in any matches. For the remainder of the term, PSSA training will be held on Wednesday mornings from 8.15-8.45am. Summer PSSA will continue in Term 4. Winter PSSA students are reminded to wash and return their jersey to their coach absolutely no later than Friday 14 September. Swim Scheme The Swim Scheme for Year 2 will commence next term. This program proved to be very beneficial and enjoyable for all students who participated last year. There are limited places left so if you are interested in your child attending this program, please return the expression of interest form by Friday 14 September. Nathan Lee Sports Organiser

Students will be dressing up and participating in this fun event with their peers, whilst also raising money for our wonderful school. Last year it was very successful, raising over $13,000 for school technology resources. Parents are always welcome to come along and walk with their children on hopefully, a beautiful and sunny day! Over the next few weeks sponsor cards will be given to each student. There are some fabulous prizes that could be won by getting out there, being active and receiving donations from friends or family! Prizes will be showcased during assemblies and handed out in Term 4 after the Walkathon. We really appreciate active participation and thank you for supporting our school to raise money for technology. Students are encouraged to start bringing in their donations at the beginning of Term 4, to be in the running to win fabulous prizes!

Creative Arts

at Riverbank

Signing Choir with The Ponds School Last week something different happened during the senior choir rehearsal. The choir was joined by students and teachers from The Ponds School to begin our annual ‘Signing Choir’. Students are taught to sing and use ‘Key Word Signs’ to a number of different songs to support our inclusivity of people who are hearing impaired. It is lovely to see our students being so welcoming and supportive of other students with mental and physical disabilities. A great time was had by all!

What’s happening in… 3K This term in Art, 3K has been experimenting with different mediums, to represent things from our surroundings. When producing the artwork we have displayed in the foyer of the school office we used ‘Spring’ as our stimulus. To create the tulip posies, we used a plastic fork and paint to make the tulip flower. We then folded a sheet of coloured paper using concertina folds to make the vase. In contrast to the tulips, we cut circles of coloured paper which were then glued together in layers of different sized circles to create the ‘crazy flowers.’ We then used a black marker to draw petals of various shapes, sizes and designs around the coloured circles.
