    Much has changed since 1881 when the Paris Chamber of Commerce and

    Industry created a school to train 57 young men to assume leadership positions

    in society. Surviving two World Wars and the 1929 Great Depression, HEC Paris

    has continuously reformed its curriculum and teaching methods to ensure that

    the education it provides can drive, as well as reflect, the world’s business

    environment.

    HEC Paris, founded in 1881 by the ParisChamber of Commerce and Industry

    (the “CCIP”), is one of France’s oldestelite higher education Grandes Ecoles .Unique to France, the concept wasintroduced by Napoleon so that “thebest and the brightest” could bechanneled into his armies andengineering corps. Unlike French publicuniversities which are required toaccept all candidates from the sameregion who hold a baccalauréat , theselection criteria for the Grandes Ecoles rest mainly on competitive written and

    oral exams, taken by students fromdedicated preparatory classes.

    The HEC Center GREGHEC(Groupe de Recherche et

    d'Etudes en Gestion at HEC)

    is a joint CNRS-HECresearch laboratory. The CNRS is themain French institution for academicresearch. The members of the

    The Social Realities and

    Innovations Academy

    This Academy is one of nineteen shortcourses offered to MSc students. Heldover 2-3 weeks in January, this shortprogram encourages participants toreflect on current social issues, such asold-age isolation or extreme poverty.

    The “Alter-Management”

    specializationEstablished in September 2006, theAlternative Management Major is aspecialization available to students inthe final year of the MSc inManagement program interested inexploring new ways of thinking thatchallenge established ideas.

    The “Social Business” Certificate

    program

    Offered in the final year of the MSc in

    Initiatives like introducing coursescovering sustainable businesspractices, the proposition of a widerange of relevant electives, the annualon-campus Sustainable BusinessConference, the integration of Missionand Action Projects reflect the HECParis MBA’s ongoing commitment toforecasting and meeting the changingneeds of global business.

    Research throughthe ChairsThe “Social Business/Enterprise

    and Poverty” Chair

    The aim of the chair is threefold: To educate the next generation ofmanagers, encouraging them tobecome more aware of societalchallenges: The chair offers theintegrated “Social Business Certificateprogram” as well as several shortercourses on the topic.

    To develop quality research onstrategic innovation in societal fields aswell as composing case studies on

    themes involving social business andthe ways in which business cancontribute to alleviating poverty.

    To bring together large firms,government members and heads ofnon-profit organizations to contribute tobuilding a more inclusive economy, inFrance and in developed countriesthrough the “Action Tank” initiative.

    The goal is to help firms develop aseries of social experimentationsseeking to alleviate poverty. Twelvemultinational corporations are activewithin the “Action Tank” at this stage, infour different working sectors, and thisnumber is still growing.

    This chair is co-presided by ProfessorMuhammad Yunus and Martin Hirsch,and receives financial support fromDanone, Schneider Electric, the Frenchgovernment (DGCS) and private donors.

    Sustainability” Chair

    This chair focuses on business modelsfor sustainable development and howthey can be used to generate growthand create value. It examines socialentrepreneurs and multinationalcorporations coming together in social

    business initiatives. It also explores thewater and energy sectors and theconditions required to transformvolume strategies into value strategies.

    The Renault “Multicultural

    Management and Corporate

    Performance” Chair

    Dedicated to the study of dailycooperation of teams from differentcountries and cultures, this chairplaces particular emphasis on

    managerial practices geared toeconomic realities and to all types ofcultural diversity: national, professionaland organizational.

    Alternative Management

    Observatory (AMO)

    The AMO welcomes students,researchers and executives who thinkoutside the box. AMO publicationsinclude case studies, articles andpapers.

    The Society and Organizations

    (SnO) Research Center

    The SnO Research Center was createdin the wake of the 2008 financial crisisto question the prevailing socio-economic models of the time andinvestigate their historical foundations.Building on a wide range of disciplines(economy, sociology, psychology,history) and theoretical frameworks,SnO members study how organizationsaffect broader social issues and,conversely, how changes in the politicaland social spheres affect organizationalactions. SnO is supported by the HECFoundation.

    Social diversityIn partnership with the French Ministryof National Education and the HECFoundation, HEC Paris continues to

    develop targeted tutoring andmentorship programs. These initiativesaim to promote academic achievementand equal opportunity among promisingstudents from disadvantagedbackgrounds.

    Through the “Cordées de la Réussite”,HEC Paris supports and tutors morethan 200 students from preparatoryschools in the Paris suburbs and in twoFrench overseas departments.

    PACE (Programme d’action et decoopération pour l’éducation) alsosupports students from disadvantagedareas in the Paris region in their finalyears of school, preparing them forfurther education. PREP’ is designedmore specifically for students preparingto attend business schools.

    These two programs involve more than60 HEC Paris students, all volunteersfrom large associations such as Fleur de Bitume.

    Equal opportunitiesTo support access to excellence tostudents from disadvantagedbackgrounds and to enhance socialdiversity on campus, HEC Parislaunched a new need-based tuition feespolicy in spring 2009 where eligiblestudents pay neither entrance exam nortuition fees. The initiative is supported

    by the HEC Alumni Association and theHEC Foundation.

    Class Gift

    Created in 2005 by three HEC Parisstudents, this initiative encouragesstudents to say ‘thank you’ beforeleaving the campus by donating towardsHEC Paris’ development. Donationsmade to the HEC Foundation gotowards financing scholarships andgrants for future students.

    Social awareness oncampusGrowing student response to HEC Parisinitiatives is reflected by the increasinglevels of involvement of students fromall programs in missions, internships,professional theses, student-led clubsand the organization of numerousconferences on social business-related

    subjects.

    ESP’R: an HEC Paris association forHopeThe ESP’R is an initiative set up by anHEC Paris student association enabling

    students in their first and second yearsto accompany social entrepreneurs indifferent projects or missions.

    Another student association Genepi organizes workshops and courses inprisons.

    The HEC Paris Net Impact club is incharge of the on-campus annualSustainable Business Conference thatbrings together more than 300 peopleto dialogue on the crucial challenges insocial and environmental sustainability.

    Handifférence aims to make futuremanagers more aware of the issuesfaced by disabled people in theireveryday lives.

    Responsible campus

    Beyond the academic programs itoffers, HEC Paris is also a practitionerof socially responsible initiatives.

    In June 2005, the school launched the‘Responsible Campus’ initiative, whichaims to integrate sustainabledevelopment and social responsibilityinto teaching and research, campus lifeand social engagement.

    An annual awareness day calledRethink showcases the ongoing effortsof staff, teachers and students tointegrate sustainability into their dailylives.In 2007, HEC Paris underwent a carbonemissions audit, and the schoolrecently published its first SustainableDevelopment Report, with a view tofurther reducing its carbon footprint.

    Launched in December 2006 by theCCIP, this fellowship brings togetherthe expertise of 4 schools: HEC Paris,

    HEC IncubatorLaunched in 2007 for HEC Paris

    students and young graduates, the HECIncubator assists innovating businessstart-ups in their development, byproviding mentoring, workshops,networking and support in fundraising.

    65 start-ups have been supported bythe HEC Incubator since its creation, inthe internet, mobile phone, software,media, and business services sectors,each of which offers innovative servicesand a high potential for strongdevelopment.

    30 new business ventures, out ofaround 200 proposals, are launchedfrom student ideas every year.

    Qatar Foundation (QF) and HEC Parislaunched a unique partnership in June

    2010 for degree and custom executiveprograms aimed at providing cutting-edge practices in managementeducation in Qatar and the larger Gulfregion, targeting experienced managersand executives. HEC Paris became QFEducation City’s first European Partner.

    This unique initiative with QF resulted inthe successful launch of Qatar’s firstever Executive MBA in February 2011and the establishment of a new Chairwith Total, which has long supportedHEC Paris’ arrival to Qatar.

    IIM-Ahmedabad StrategicPartnership

    HEC Paris and the Indian Institute ofManagement - Ahmedabad (IIM-A) haveextended the cooperation between thetwo leading business schools byofficially signing a Strategic PartnershipAgreement. It encompasses thefollowing areas of cooperation: faculty

    In March 2010, HEC Paris became thefirst French business school to share itsknowledge and academic content(courses and conferences) on iTunes U.Less than three months after thelaunch of HEC Paris on iTunes U, theacademic content made by HEC Parisfaculty was widely acclaimed. Manycourses now form part of the most

    downloaded podcasts on iTunes U, fourof which were selected by the editorialboard of iTunes U to be showcased onthe international iTunes U homepage.Following this great success in 2010,with a range of public lectures andcourses available for download, HECParis has been developing its academiccontent by uploading full researchworkshops on its iTunes U site.
