THIS IS ELY // Rotary Clubs

R O T A R Y C L U B O F E L YOn 7th September 1938, a meeting was called for the purpose of looking into the possibilities of forming a Rotary Club in Ely. It was at this meeting that seven members of Ely’s business community unanimously resolved to form a Rotary Club.

The Cambridge Rotary Club expressed an interest in sponsoring a club in Ely and so it was from that time forward that the seven, which gradually increased in number, received instruction in the philosophy of the Rotary movement by attending the Cambridge club’s weekly meetings. In a short space of time, the inaugural luncheon was held on 30th November 1938 at the Bell Inn with District Chairman, F.E.Hares of Kings Lynn in the chair.

It was some six months later that the club received its Charter on 7th June 1939 at a ceremony held at the Central Hall, Market Street, Ely.At the outbreak of the second world war, many of the members were of such an age, they were not likely to be called up for service in HM forces. During the war years, moneys were raised and donations given to various Service Benevolent and Comfort funds as well as the national appeals for “War Weapons Week.” It is further noted that the club held a weekly collection to raise money for the ‘Prisoner of War Fund’ in particular support of members of the Cambridge Regiment who were captured after the fall of Singapore.

In the post war years, the club gradually increased in numbers so had to move to a larger dining room at the Bell Inn in the High Street. At this time, the luncheon price rose from three shillings to six shillings per head which equates to approximately sixty pence today. In 1958 with the proposed closing of the Bell Inn, the club moved to the

Cutter Inn down by the river. The club met at the Cutter Inn for the next 20 years before moving to the Ely Beet Sports and Social Club in Lynn Road. It now meets at the Witchford playing fields Pavillion, Witchford.

AQUAFEST In 1978 the club launched its first “Aquafest” on the river Great Ouse in Ely, an event that has become very popular in Ely and is still staged every year.

On a visit to the Rotary Club of Axminster, Rotarian Stan Baker of this club overheard a discussion on raft and canoe racing on the river Ax. Stan thought we could do something similar on the river Ouse here in Ely and so put it to the club who thought it was a good idea.

Having obtained permission to use the field by the river on Willow Walk, the club fixed a date of the 16th July 1978 when Aquafest was born. We wrote to local firms inviting them to build rafts to race to the Cutter Inn and back. We also asked people with canoes to race from the Black Horse Inn, Littleport, (now the Swan on the river) to Military Bridge on the A1123 and back to Ely.

This was a long race and subsequently died a natural death after two years. On the field, we had charity stalls often manned by Rotarians. We were fortunate that ten Rotarians and their wives from Balham (south London) came along to help out.

Main arena events were often spectacular such as High Wire acts, Parachute jumps and an Auto Gyro attacking Rotarian John Dennick who was on the river, with small rockets (not

In 2004 the Rotary Club of Ely-Hereward was formed and were invited to participate with us, as a joint venture. It was in 2006 that we expanded Aquafest to incorporate Jubilee Gardens thus involving the whole of Ely’s waterfront.

Three of the original Rotarians who, were at the very first Aquafest have participated at every event for the 37 years that Aquafest has been running.

For most people, attempting the demanding UK Three Peaks Challenge would be daunting enough. However, for Sutton couple Tristan and Lucie Melen, this month sees them join a team taking on the gruelling challenge for the second time. The UK Three Peaks Challenge requires adventurers to climb the highest mountain in each of Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours. Last year the group successfully conquered Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike and were on course to achieve the challenge when they got stuck in traffic behind a road accident on the M6 on their way to Snowdon, meaning that they completed the route in about 26 hours. So, refusing to be defeated, they are teaming up again with friends and work colleagues for a second attempt.“Planning has to be meticulous”, said Lucie. “We have chosen a weekend as close as possible to the longest day in the year, so that we have as much daylight as possible, and will be setting off to climb Mount Snowdon on the evening of the 19th June”. The team will try to get as much rest and sleep in the 11 hours in the minibus between climbs, as they journey up from Wales to the Lake District to take on Scafell Pike, and then on to Scotland for the final leg up and down Ben Nevis before the 24 hour deadline. All being well, that evening they will have double cause for celebration as it is also Tristan’s 27th birthday. What a way to celebrate!“We have to do this again”, continued Lucie, “and we won’t be defeated. We are all taking on the challenge to raise money for “Be Child Cancer Aware”, who run the Beads of Courage programme in the UK. This is a cause close to my heart as they were a great support to a little girl I taught - Eilish - and her family, before she sadly passed away aged 4 in October 2014. Her beads continue to be a reminder of her joy despite immense bravery throughout her illness.”Training for the event began months ago and has included walking sections of the Pennine Way. Tristan took part in the 26 mile Leaden Boot Challenge and Lucie has opted to cycle to her work at Beach Babies Nursery in Wilburton. Lucie and Tristan would welcome donations to their charity to help spur them on to complete their challenge. Anyone who would like to make a donation can do so online at www.justgiving.com/National3peaks2015. Please add Gift-Aid if you are eligible to do so.The group are now hoping for fair weather and freedom from traffic problems as they complete their preparations. For further information please contact Lucie Melen – [email protected]

Ely Hereward Rotary’s newest (and youngest) member.

At last week’s Ely Hereward Rotary Club meeting, where President-elect Janet Porter presented her fundraising plans for her 2015-16 Presidential year, Nastaran Rahnama was welcomed as the Club’s latest (and youngest) member.

Nastaran works for Oil and Gas Ely, and says she decided to join the club after coming along as the guest of a member and being impressed by the friendliness of the club’s members, and its commitment to supporting local charities and good causes through its fundraising and volunteering activities.

What unique 400 year-old team activity keeps you fit, exercises your mind and can introduce you to new friends?BELL RINGING!Bell ringing is great fun, a chance to meet new friends, and it is a great skill dating back hundreds of years! It also has benefits of mental and physical exercise.

However, with the average age of bell ringers continuing increase, more new ringers need to be recruited and trained if we are to ensure the continuity of this unique traditional activity. Here in Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, for example, we have around 900 ringable bells but fewer than 700 active bell ringers!

In response, the Ely Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers’ has set up its first Ringing Education Centre at St James Church, Stretham, near Ely. The Stretham Centre will be open to new learners and improving ringers of all ages from anywhere in the Diocese and state-of-the-art ringing simulation technology will allow several learners to practice individually at the same time. There will be a programme of regular teaching sessions with experienced and qualified teachers and specific courses covering everything from basic bell handling to learning advanced change-ringing methods.

The Centre has a ring of 6 (9-2-21) and a simulator, allowing ringers to practise on any number of bells. There is also a meeting room where students can practise methods on the computer using Abel ringing software or view instructional DVDs. The Centre is available at any time of the day or evening - other than when the building is in use by the church or by the local band of ringers - and can be used in a great variety of ways:

• You can book an individual or group lesson with one of the Centre’s approved teachers (many of whom are ITTS-qualified). This can cover any aspect of your learning to ring.

• Advanced ringers may book the Centre for individual or group practice without a teacher being required.

• If ringers wish to bring their own learners and use the facilities of the Centre to teach them, they are very welcome.

• Tower captains can bring their whole bands for extra practice or a focus session.

• Courses will be run at the Stetham Centre. If you have a requirement for a particular course, please ask.

There is a small charge of £2 per ringer per session, to cover expenses, donations etc.

If you would like to find out more about church bell ringing, or would like to start learning, in the first instance please contact the bell ringers at whichever church is most convenient for you. Contact names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses for towers in the Ely area are as follows:

THIS IS ELY // Your Stories

Book Review “Haunted Ely” by Margaret Haynes and Vivienne Doughty This guide to the ghost of the Isle of Ely and its surroundings is as much about the local history as about the ghouls. Margaret Haynes took an interest in ghost stories during a visit to York and brought her interest back to Ely, starting a tour here. The stories poured in and there were soon too many to include in a tour, therefore the book was written to include all the stories.

Haunted Ely is as much a collection of stories detailing the sightings made by residents and visitors to Ely, as a history of the people who have lived here over the centuries. Histories of St Etheldreda, Hereward and Cromwell as well as the many buildings feature heavily to provide context for the ghost’s appearances. Reading this book you discover that animals make themselves known, including a wandering dog on the A10 near Witchford Aerodrome and a faithful family cat that guards a house on Chapel Street. Animals don’t just feature as ghosts but have behaved strangely in areas known to have been frequented by ghosts.

The tales are of friendly, mischievous, haunting and careless apparitions. A jovial monk that visited the old Stain Glass Window Museum in the Cathedral, a family who lived in the cottages next to the Fountain who threw pot plants around the room, an icy female presence in the Attack Room of the Deanery on Oyster Lane and a girl who dives into the traffic. A Recommended read for those with an interest in ghost’s history or as an introduction to the area.

Review written by Tom Watkins

A local professional musician, Kathryn Rowland, tells us about a musical journey she goes on twice a year to Shooting Star Chase Children’s Hospice in Guildford….For the past three years, twice a year, I make the journey to Guildford to work in an amazing place – Shooting Star Chase Children’s Hospice…. I say the word ‘work’ but it never feels that way, more of a privilege to meet and make music with some of the most special and bravest young people I could ever imagine meeting.

I work with a team of professional musicians, which include musicians who play with London’s top orchestras, as well as Jason Rowland, a creative music workshop leader (also from Ely!) who leads workshops for many organisations including the Royal Opera House, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonia Orchestra. Also on our team, and a really important part, are the team from Shooting Star Chase who enable our days to happen smoothly ensuring the young people are cared for and have all they need, as well as Vicky Kammin who is the Music Therapist for Shooting Star Chase making this all happen!

“The Festival of Music” is an annual event at Christopher’s, the hospice in Guildford, and during the three days we are there we create music with the life-limited children and young people, which then culminates in a grand performance at the hospice in front of families and staff. The interaction with the children and young people is amazing, and the responses we get – sometimes there are just no words. These young musicians direct us, composing every piece of music, which can be through the smallest of signals, but as a musician I know it is there. The music enables each child to express themselves, providing opportunity for

everyone to be involved and included.

Another programme is the renowned “Rocks and Pebbles” which works closely with the Bereavement Team at Shooting Star Chase, as we have music workshops with children and young people who have lost a sibling. Again, sometimes words cannot describe the responses and emotions of these children, but the immense benefit of them being able to express through

music is amazing – even as I write this I can feel the emotions of those moments! If you would like to support these projects which provide such a vital part of these young peoples’ lives please visit www.shootingstarchase.org.uk or contact Kathryn (see below). Meanwhile I am really looking forward to going back in August for our next “Festival”……..

Kathryn is also Musical Director for Sing! Choirs which provides singing opportunities for everyone, with choirs in Ely, Cambridge and Newmarket, as well as GO Sing! for young people in Ely – please contact Kathryn on [email protected] for more information.

Virtually a Tour!Ely Artist, Ted Coney has just his pop-up gallery again on Sunday afternoons and is giving guided tours around his work, which is all about family life and family relationships.

Ted Coney’s Family Portraits first opened in 2008 and Ted has been showing visitors around the home on Waterside he shares with his wife, Hazel, ever since. Booking is essential as each tour, which lasts about an hour, only takes six visitors at a time and there are eight tours to choose from. Each tour ends in Ted’s Studio, where visitors will see his latest oil painting in progress. No work is for sale, though prints can be obtained from his website.

However, there is a new aspect to the business this year. Ted has just launched a virtual tour which can be viewed from his website. The tour looks at four of his family paintings on the theme of ‘Simultaneity’.

‘The virtual tour can show things you could only imagine on a real visit’ said Ted

Soopa Doopa Jake to join Union J on Great Walltrek to raise funds for breast cancer charityCoppafeelJake, 34, is hoping to raise thousands of pounds for breast cancer charity Coppafeel as he takes on a trek across the world’s most famous wall with other fund-raisers and members of the pop band Union J – who appeared on the X Factor in 2012.

The feat is being backed by the Sun newspaper, which ran a competition for people to earn a place on the trek, with Jake’s entry chosen from among the hundreds of applications received.

Jake, the owner of marketing firm Soopa Doopa Branding Ltd, said he was inspired to take part in the challenge by his late grandparents, of which three died of cancer, and his brother Josh – who also raised funds for charity before taking part in a trek across the Simpson Desert, Australia before his death in a road accident in 2011.

Jake said: “I’ve never been to China before so I am sure it will be a great experience and it’s for a great cause as well. My family has been

greatly affected by cancer and it was something I wanted to do for them as well as my brother, who also raised a lot of money trekking across the desert in Australia.”

There will be two charity events taking place to raise further funds. The first on the 16th of July at the Hereward Pub, Ely with local band Blue Thunder performing and the second on the 17th July at the Village Inn Pub, Witchford with Walkaway, the band that has been supporting Status Quo with their recent UK tour.

The trek is set to take place over 10 days in October, and Jake is hoping to have raised thousands of pounds by the time he leaves for China.

Creating the cover shot...The photo of the cathedral through a window of orange leaves required several levels of editing to end up at the final shot. I’ll try and describe the process here, although it won’t be 100% accurate – when editing a shot, I tend to try lots of different steps until I get the end result I want, and don’t note down exactly what I did along the way!By way of introduction, here’s the starting point for the image:

The first thing you’ll spot is that the leaves are green – this is because the photo was taken in May, not October (and even then, leaves don’t always go a lovely orange – they often go a grubby brown and drop on the floor!) We’ll come back to the colouring in a bit. The other thing you’ve probably spotted is the picture is quite dark. This is intentional. Digital cameras have a much lower dynamic range than the human eye. Dynamic range is simply the difference between the brightest and darkest tones the sensor will record without becoming saturated (i.e. 100% white or black). Most cameras can recover some detail from shadow areas, but once the highlight areas have saturated, you cannot recover any details at all; you’re still stuck with plain white. When taking this picture, I made sure that the sky wasn’t saturated so I could recover detail later which meant the leaves came out darker than we really want. The first step is to even out the exposure levels. I’ll generally use Adobe Lightroom for this by lowering the highlights slider, raising the shadows slider, then increasing the contrast slider. I might also adjust the exposure slider to correct the overall balance. The important thing here is to keep an eye on the Histogram (the graph which shows the distribution of tones throughout the image) to ensure that we’re not clipping the highlights or shadows. After making those changes, I also decided a square-format would suit the image well. At this point, we have the photo below:

It’s fine, but a little “flat” – so I loaded the image up into another tool, Color Efex Pro 4. This is part of the Nik collection (available from Google) and enables you to make a whole host of adjustments to an image. The first thing I tried was the “Foliage” tool, which increases the impact of green tones in a picture. It still wasn’t giving the look I wanted though, so I next tried the “Indian Summer” tool. This filter transforms green tones in an image into orange/yellow/red depending on how you set the options. You can also control the amount of the effect that’s applied. As you can see below- the red is pretty dramatic when cranked up to maximum but a bit too fake for this scene (I think it would work well with a misty forest though!) At this point I forget the next steps – it’s likely I’ll have made further adjustments to contrast and possibly added a little glow using some of the other filters – I often end up with a stack of four or five filters targeting specific parts of the photo). The next step was to get the sunlight reflections on the water to have a bit more impact.
