A WARM WELCOME TO AFRICA’S TOP DESTINATION

Welcome to the third edition of

HATAB’s ‘This is Botswana’.

Botswana’s hospitality sector continues

to make great strides and its contribu-

tion to our nation’s economy grows

bigger each year.

NEW STANDARDS

Furthermore, Botswana continues to

set new standards as it maintains and

enhances its reputation as Africa’s

best-run destination. As in previous

years, our national parks and reserves

have won prestigious international

awards for their management and

quality of visitor experience.

It should not be forgotten that

Botswana in general, and Gaborone

in particular, repre-

sent a key location for

international confer-

ences, seminars and

exhibitions. The hotels

of Gaborone refl ect

this, offering a range of

quality accommodation

to suit all budgets.

At the same time,

Botswana is justly

proud of a transport

infrastructure – particularly roads and

airports – that allows visitors to move

with ease around our vast and largely

unpopulated country.

As Batswana, we may be comparatively

few in number, but our welcome is as

warm as our summers are long.

WONDERFUL LANDSCAPE, FRIENDLY PEOPLE –

INTRODUCTION

As a visitor destination, Botswana

encompasses all that is best in

Africa. If there is a better country in

Africa to live in or visit, then many

have yet to fi nd it.

Its wide-open spaces, far horizons,

cloudless skies, teeming wildlife and

warm and friendly people are coupled

with good governance, the rule of law

and a fi rst-rate infrastructure. All these

ingredients combine neatly to make

Botswana an almost perfect nation

– one to which other Africans aspire.

The success of Botswana over the past

40 years has been based largely on

diamonds. But, as the sale of diamonds

has taken a dip in recent times, so

tourism has become ever more impor-

tant to the nation’s economy. This is

reinforced by the government’s far-

sightedness and wisdom in diversifying

the economy away from exports of

precious stones and minerals.

In terms of tourism, Botswana provides

two distinct experiences for visitors.

One is game viewing, which is confi ned

mainly to the north and north-east and

is based on the frontier towns of Maun

and Kasane.

AFRICA’S BEST

Botswana’s national parks are among

the best in Africa, rightly famed for

their careful management and for

the density of game. In partic-

ular, the 4,871 sq km Moremi

and 10,566 sq km Chobe parks

continue to be a magnet for

wildlife enthusiasts. As is

the Northern Tuli Game

Reserve – a land of unsurpassed beauty

and a compelling mix of wildlife, history

and culture.

Coupled with the high standard of

accommodation on offer, they provide

an irresistible combination that many

other African destinations fi nd hard to

match.

In addition to the better known

Moremi, Chobe and Tuli parks, there is

the 38,000 sq km Kgalagadi Transfron-

4

Page 9: This is Botswana 2009-10

tier National Park, shared by Botswana

and South Africa, of which more than

two-thirds is located within Botswana.

The park was established in 2000

and covers an area of the southern

Kalahari. It represents a different

– certainly more arid – type of eco

system from those in the north. The

Kgalagadi offers an interesting alterna-

tive to the nation’s better known and

more frequently visited parks.

GATEWAY

Maun is the gateway to the famed

Okavango Delta and the Moremi Game

Reserve. The evocative Okavango offers

the ultimate in game viewing and

a unique safari experience. Its ever-

changing landscape, as waters rise and

then evaporate again over many months,

guarantees the visitor a truly memorable

African experience. Furthermore, Chobe

National Park, generally accessed via

Kasane, is widely considered Africa’s

fi nest in terms of animal density and the

overall visitor experience.

Meanwhile, the nation’s capital,

Gaborone, should not be overlooked.

It has a growing number of attractions

for visitors, including Gaborone Village,

the National Museum, the Three Chiefs

Monument, great shopping malls,

good restaurants and two fi ne golf

courses. Francistown, too, is growing

in importance as a business centre and

boasts several fi ne hotels.

Botswana has gained international

recognition through ‘The No 1 Ladies’

Detective Agency’ – the popular novels

that have been turned into a television

series on HBO and BBC. The extremely

popular TV series has brought the local

landscape to an audience that had,

perhaps, never given much thought

to Botswana. This can only be a good

thing for tourism, especially as visitors

to Gaborone can now take a ‘No 1

Ladies’ Detective Agency’ tour to see

popular locations such as Zebra Drive

and Speedy Motors. It proves, once

again, that Botswana is more than just

a wildlife destination.

Page 10: This is Botswana 2009-10

SOCIAL CHANGES

SOCIETY

Few countries in the world have

changed as dramatically as

Botswana in recent times with the

growth of a new middle class and

working class, largely resident in

towns and fl uent in both Setswana

and English. In contrast to much of

Africa, this newly urbanised popula-

tion broadly expresses a national

identity over any would-be ‘tribal’

allegiances.

Prior to this drift to the towns and cities,

families in rural areas lived

in traditional compounds,

usually consisting of two

or three small houses with

clay walls, a thatched roof

and an open fi replace. In

more recent times, less

affl uent Batswana have

opted for square houses

with metal roofs. In parts of

the country, houses are still

made of reed. Nowadays,

furniture and other house-

hold items are mostly Western, yet

many people continue to use traditional

sleeping mats and cook food in large

three-legged pots over an open fi re.

GROUPS

Irrespective of ethnic background,

the people of Botswana are known

collectively as Batswana

and as Motswana in

the singular. The vast

majority form part of the

Sotho-Tswana culture.

The Tswana are divided

into eight groups or

‘tribes’. And, despite

growing affl uence and

urbanisation, most Batswana still

identify themselves with one of these

eight groups – Batawana, Bangwato,

Bakwena, Bangwaketse, Bakgatla,

Batlokwa, Balete and Barolong – that

are affi liated to certain parts of

Botswana.

In addition, there are many smaller

ethnic groups, thought to number

more than 20, that do not form part

of this group of eight Tswana-speaking

tribes. These minority peoples often

live close to the borders with Botswa-

na’s neighbours, Zimbabwe, Namibia,

Zambia and South Africa, and

include such groups as the Basubiya,

Batswapong, Babirwa and Bakalanga.

LEAD TO STRONG NATIONAL IDENTITY

Page 11: This is Botswana 2009-10

TRADITIONAL RECIPES OR INTERNATIONAL CUISINE –

Ironically, most visitors to Botswana

eat food very similar to what they

enjoy in their own country. No doubt

this is due to the high standard of

international cuisine available in the

hotels and restaurants of Gaborone

and to the wholesome quality

of food served at even the most

isolated bush camp.

Yet Botswana does have a cooking style

of its own. Admittedly, there are stark

regional variations depending on the

area of the country in which people

live and on the amount of rainfall. To

Western palates, some local meals may

seem bland and unappetising at fi rst.

With its heavy reliance on beans and

maize, the local cuisine can be some-

thing of an acquired taste.

Aside from beans and maize, however,

it should be remembered that

Botswana is justly famous for the high

quality of its locally reared beef, on

which its wealth was based long before

the discovery of diamonds. Other

popular ingredients in local cooking

are chicken, goat and lamb or mutton.

And, despite Botswana’s somewhat

parched landscape, freshwater fi sh is a

feature of many dishes.

The main crops of Botswana are

sorghum and maize, so naturally

they form part of the traditional diet.

However, growing affl uence has led to

imports of both rice and wheat.

Pulses are also grown. They include

cowpea, ditloo (bambara groundnut)

and letlhodi (China beans) as well as

peanuts. Nowadays, too, cabbage,

carrots, onions, potatoes, spinach, sweet

potatoes and tomatoes are produced

locally. For many urban Batswana,

they have all but replaced local wild

vegetables in the preparation of dishes.

As a matter of fact, in days gone by,

vegetables would have

been dried and salted.

Nevertheless, dried bean

leaves remain popular.

When it comes to fruit,

the marula – about the

size of a small plum

– is aromatic and juicy.

It may be eaten fresh

and the fl esh has a high

content of Vitamin C.

It may also be cooked to produce jam,

juices, sweets and alcoholic beverages.

WILD MELON

Water melons are plentiful in season. So

is lerotse, a wild melon for cooking, which

can be served with traditional madila or

rare Tswana relish such as morogo, nama

ya podi, serobe and tlhako ya podi.

Seswaa, or chotlho, is a popular tradi-

tional meat dish that is served on most

special occasions. It is cooked with

just salt and water in a three-legged

iron pot. Serobe is worth trying but

perhaps is not for the squeamish as it

consists of intestines and other odd

animal parts such as trotters. Another

favourite meat dish is oxtail.

PORRIDGE

East of the Kalahari, sorghum is the

main crop and forms the staple of

main dishes. Sorghum is ground into

meal and mixed with either boiling

water or sour milk to make a kind of

breakfast porridge known as bogobe.

Thicker versions of the same mixture are

then eaten at dinner accompanied by

relish, the base of which may be meat,

tomato, or dried fi sh. Another way of

making bogobe is to add sour milk and

lerotse. However, imported maize meal

is now often used instead of bogobe.

The most common way to eat fl our is

to make dumplings (matlebekwane),

fl at cakes (diphaphatha) and fat cakes

(magwinya). For these, the fl our is

made into dough which is cooked in

various ways such as boiling with meat

or cooking in hot oil or on hot coals.

In more rural areas, and where water is

scarce, the resourcefulness of local tribes

has led to morama, a huge underground

tuber, being eaten as an edible fungus.

In a similar way to Australian aborigines,

they also eat the mopane worm, a grub

that looks like a caterpillar and is an

important source of protein. The grub

is cooked in hot ash, or boiled, or dried

and fried. The traditional method of

preparing the grub is by degutting,

cooking, salting and drying for long-

term storage.

TRADITION GIVES WAY TO

ARCHITECTURE

Visiting Gaborone today, it is

perhaps diffi cult to comprehend

that, within living memory, most

Batswana lived in rather rudimen-

tary dwellings a world away from

the glass-fronted offi ce towers

and palatial ranch-style properties

that now grace the city centre and

surrounding suburbs.

LOCAL MATERIALS

Traditionally, houses were made from

readily available local materials such as

mud, dung and wood, while the roofs

were thatched. Most of these houses

were built by the people who lived in

them. The houses were round in shape

and often included a lolwapa or court-

yard. Dwellings were often constructed

in a group so that members of the same

family could live in close proximity.

Almost all of this type of makeshift

dwelling has disappeared from

Gaborone and many other towns. But

some good examples of traditional

building methods and non-domestic

architecture can still be found. One of

these is the old fort and prison building

in Gaborone Village.

More recently, and with fi nancial

assistance from the government, basic

domestic dwellings have tended to

be square in shape. They have metal

instead of thatched roofs and the walls

are made from bricks and cement.

Furthermore, these houses feature

individual rooms such as a kitchen and

bedrooms and, in general, the builders

have discarded the old-style courtyard

in favour of open space around the

dwelling and between each house and

its neighbour.

At the same time, it is still common

for many Batswana to own a house in

town while retaining their agricultural

and rural links with their home village.

This link may include agricultural land

as well as a dwelling. Many also own

a cattle-post, where livestock are kept.

This cattle-post may include some

basic-looking buildings and/or a shelter

for the herdsman.

In villages, the chief is all-powerful.

He or she presides over a central court

and public forum known as a kgotla

– a meeting place, village council and

law court all rolled into one, where

community decisions are arrived at by

consensus. Despite Botswana’s rush

to modernise, the kgotla remains a

feature of rural life and a reminder, if

one were needed, of the profoundly

democratic traditions of this nation.

NATIONAL CULTURE

In a fast-changing world, Batswana

are rightly proud of a rich and

varied culture that refl ects the sheer

diversity of this vast and under-popu-

lated country.

Given the soar-away growth of Botswa-

na’s economy over the past 43 years,

and its impact on traditional ways of

living, it is remarkable how much time

and effort has been focused on main-

taining traditional culture in general

and dance in particular.

ANIMAL SKINS

Dressed only in animal skins, the dance

troupes are usually an equal mix of

men and women. Dancers wear shells

round their ankles and some male

dancers also carry whistles. The only

accompaniment is the beat of drums.

Traditional troupes ensure that dance

styles are kept alive, and the San dance

style ‘tsutsube’ and Setswana ‘setapa’

remain popular. The internationally

known Mogwana, a professional dance

troupe based in Gaborone, sets a high

standard in terms of performance and

adherence to traditional dancing styles.

Every August, dance afi cionados head

to the Kalahari to enjoy the Kuru San

Dance Festival. At the festival, various

San groups, including the Naro, the

!Xun, the !Khwe, the Dxana/ Dcui and

the Xhanikwe, seize the opportunity to

show off their culture to an interna-

tional audience.

ART PROMOTION

Government ministries already do

much to promote Batswana art by

buying paintings and other works

from local artists. A permanent gallery

has been established at the National

Museum in Gaborone to encourage

local artists and showcase

their work.

Furthermore, the Ministry

of Youth, Sport and

Culture is looking to

replace President Day with

Heritage Day, which will

promote the performing

arts and culture of

Botswana and will support

traditional dancers.

TOP QUALITY BASKETS

Botswana’s handmade baskets are

among the fi nest in Africa and can

command very high prices. The

baskets are made from the shoots of

the mokolane palm. These are boiled

in natural earth dyes. Designs are

contemporary, but still use tradi-

tional African patterns. Baskets can

be bought in many places, but in

particular at the Bokamoso Basket

Co-operative, just outside Maun.

A STRONG AND RELIABLE ALLY

CITIZEN ENTREPRENEURIAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY

Botswana’s Citizen Entrepre-

neurial Development Agency

(CEDA) was set up by the govern-

ment to support the development

of small, medium and large-scale

enterprises.

CEDA offers funding from BWP 500

to BWP 2 million over periods of up

to seven years and at low rates of

interest for capital expenditure, stock

or working capital in new and existing

business ventures. It also offers training

and mentoring for new and seasoned

entrepreneurs. The benefi ciaries must

be citizens of Botswana or wholly

Batswana-owned companies.

The main products and services of

CEDA are:

• Loan fi nancing (Development Fund and Young Farmers’ Fund)

• Non-cash instruments

• Provision of training and mentoring services

• Credit Guarantee Scheme.

SCHEMES

CEDA has other citizen development

schemes under its management,

such as the CEDA Venture Capital

Fund administered by Venture Capital

Botswana. The Venture Capital Fund

covers loans of between BWP 0.5 and

30 million over periods of up to 15

years. Eligibility is extended to cover

joint ventures between citizens and

non-citizens. This is an ideal arrange-

ment for those wishing to invest in

Botswana’s hospitality sector.

In choosing local entrepreneurs and

businesses to support, CEDA will assist

those who add value to the Botswana

economy, foster citizen entrepreneur-

ship, achieve economic diversifi cation,

reward competitiveness and effi ciency,

create sustainable job opportunities

and promote integration and linkages

between citizen enterprises and

primary industries.

Furthermore, successful appli-

cants should aim to improve their

effi ciency in delivering services to

business. This applies in particular to

the small business support services

– for example, advisory and training

services – that in the past were poorly

marketed and of inferior quality.

A DESIRE TO

The Botswana Tourism Board

(BTB) is a parastatal body set

up through an Act of Parliament

in 2003 with a comprehensive and

ambitious mandate to market the

nation’s tourism product, to grade

and classify tourist accommodation,

and to encourage investment in the

tourism sector.

The government decided to estab-

lish BTB as a separate body because

it recognised that functions such as

marketing are best handled outside

government.

Through its conservation policies and

eco-tourism strategies, BTB aims to

ensure that local tourism is sustainable

– both for its

inhabitants and

for future genera-

tions of tourists

– while also

contributing to

the national economy. This also means

that visitors can be sure of returning to

a pristine environment.

SUSTAINABLE

In line with the development and

growth of sustainable tourism, BTB

has produced an eco tourism manual

to serve as a guide for Botswana

operators and to ensure that local

developments are carried out in

harmony with nature.

BTB has also completed the fi rst-ever

nationwide grading of accommodation

facilities. This is based on the widely

used and understood star system and

is shown in this publication and on the

BTB website.

Grading is an ongoing process,

however, and the BTB welcomes

feedback from

visitors who

have used its

accommoda-

tion facilities so

that it can go on

improving the service.

Botswana is known for its peace and

tranquillity, its diamonds (of which it’s

the world’s largest exporter by value),

its phenomenal game viewing and

wilderness areas and the quality of its

beef. In all of Africa, Botswana stands

out as a beacon of democracy and

upholder of the rule of law.

Botswana has found success in the

tourism sector by adopting an open

approach to foreign investment

while also encouraging its citizens to

participate in the development of new

tourism products and services.

A MISSION TO SAFEGUARD THE NATION’S HERITAGE OF

A vital role in the stewardship of

Botswana’s natural heritage is

played by the Ministry of Environ-

ment, Wildlife & Tourism (MEWT).

The ministry is responsible for over-

seeing and enhancing the nation’s

environment policy and management

of the environment, its forestry, its

weather services, tourism development

and conservation of wildlife.

SUPERVISION

MEWT also supervises a number of

statutory authorities and other organi-

sations with portfolio responsibilities,

including:

• Department of Wildlife & National Parks

• Department of Tourism

• Department of Meteoro-logical Services

• Department of Waste Management & Pollution Control

• Department of Environ-mental Affairs

• Department of Forestry & Range Resources

• Department of Ministry of Management.

KEY SOURCE

As part of a national diversifi ca-

tion programme, Botswana views

tourism as a key source of foreign

exchange and foreign investment that

can generate job opportunities for

educated Batswana.

The aim of MEWT is to co-ordinate

these various departments to ensure

that Botswana continues to be one of

Africa’s best game-viewing destinations.

MEWT recognises that, in the case of

Botswana, tourism would be greatly

diminished without a commitment to

wildlife conservation. Furthermore, the

development of camps and lodges in

some of the country’s remotest areas

could not take place without reference

to the impact that these properties

have on precious local resources such

as power and water.

COMES AS STANDARD IN BOTSWANA’S LARGEST HOTEL GROUP

Cresta is easily Botswana’s largest

hotel group in terms of bed

capacity and the most widely spread

when it comes to the location of its

properties. Within Botswana, Cresta

operates nine hotels, one lodge and

a resort under its three brands of

Cresta Hotels, Cresta Lodges and

Cresta Resorts.

The group’s fl agship property is the

111-room Mowana Safari Lodge in

Kasane, a perfect base from which to

explore Chobe National Park. Gabor-

one’s 160-room Cresta Lodge is just 2

km from the city centre and is conven-

ient for business.

Even more centrally located is the 90-

room Cresta President Hotel – perfect

for those

visiting

Gaborone

on business

or to attend

a confer-

ence, seminar or trade

show. Most govern-

ment ministries are just

a short walk from the

hotel.

The three-star, 51-room

Cresta Bosele Hotel is

set in the fast-growing

town of Selebi-Phikwe,

gateway to the Tuli block, famed for its

abundant wildlife.

The 49-room Cresta Botsalo Hotel is

located in the town of Palapye, which

lies in the hot, dry expanse between

Gaborone and Francistown.

MEETING PLACE

With 96 rooms, the four-star Cresta

Thapama Hotel is the largest in Francis-

town and a natural meeting place for

those on business or passing through

Botswana’s second-largest commercial

centre.

Perhaps the best located of the

group’s properties is the 158-room

Cresta Marang & Residency Hotel – just

fi ve minutes from Francistown – which

occupies what is arguably the fi nest

natural location in Botswana.

In Maun, the 51-room Cresta Riley’s

Hotel – known simply as Riley’s – offers

an established base from which to

explore the wonders of northern

Botswana. Located on the banks of the

slow-moving Thamalakane River, it is

a perfect getaway location for work or

play in peaceful surroundings and for

safaris to Moremi National Park.

Cresta Hotels also owns properties in

Ghana, Zambia and Zimbabwe, while

the group’s head offi ce is in Sandton,

South Africa.

GIVING DISABLED VISITORS A CHANCE TO ENJOY

A FULL SAFARI EXPERIENCESpecialising in

accessible travel

for disabled people

is the family-

owned company Endeavour Safaris.

The company provides travel for

people with a wide range of disabili-

ties including those with impaired

sight, hearing or mobility. Recently, the

company has expanded its operations to

offer safaris to able senior travellers who

have had hip replacements, knee or back

operations.

Endeavour Safaris’ specialised vehicles

have hydraulic wheel-chair lifts and

there are tailor-made tents which

together allow access

to Southern Africa’s

remote areas to those

with disabilities.

The experience offered

ensure that guests

with disabilities are

not excluded from any

other and in some cases

can undertake walking

safaris. As it is often the terrain rather

than the disability that prevents partici-

pation.

One of the company’s main aims is

ensuring that people with disabilities

enjoy human rights on an equal basis

with others. This is easily accomplished

on the tours arranged by Endeavour

Safaris which seek provide disabled

people with an insight into Botswana

– its landscape and wildlife.

WILDERNESS SAFARIS

ENDEAVOUR SAFARIS

JOURNEYS THAT CHANGE PEOPLE’S LIVESWilderness safaris

is a conserva-

tion organisation and eco tourism

company dedicated to responsible

tourism in southern Africa, striving

to ensure the protection of Africa’s

spectacular natural heritage while

sharing the benefi ts with its people.

In this way the company offers its guests

private access to 2.7 million hectares (6.5

million acres) of southern Africa’s

fi nest wildlife reserves while

remaining fi ercely committed to

protecting the planet’s precious

natural and cultural resources.

HABITATS

The majority of Botswana is the dry,

arid Kalahari Desert, yet

within this lie diverse

habitats such as the

Okavango Delta, the

Linyanti Reserve and

the Central Kalahari. As

an experience-driven

company, Wilderness

Safaris markets and

operates small and

intimate camps in

several private concessions in these

vast areas. Here, guests can experi-

ence the incredible wildlife and pristine

surroundings through game drives

and also by boats and dugout canoes

(mokoro) – ideal ways to explore the

channels and waterways.

Walks (at the discretion of the camp

manager) are unsurpassed for being in

touch with nature. Hides also offer a

great way to enjoy wildlife viewing and

birding, especially during those midday

siesta hours.

NICHE CARRIER AIMS TO PROVIDE AIRLINE QUALITY SERVICESNational carrier,

Air Botswana,

operates and maintains a fl eet of

three 46-seat ATR42-500s, two 68-

seat ATR72-500s and one 78-seat

BAe146 jet for use on domestic

fl ights and to serve the airline’s two

international destinations.

Air Botswana is a small niche carrier in

a world of ever-expanding global alli-

ances. The airline is wholly owned by

the Botswana government. There have

been plans to privatise the carrier, but

these have yet to be fulfi lled.

Its mission statement says that “Air

Botswana is committed to being the

airline of fi rst choice through the

delivery of high quality service”.

This ambition is refl ected in the fi gures

for air passenger traffi c. The annual

total for air passenger movements in,

out and around Botswana is about

400,000.

This includes

a total of

235,000 for

scheduled

services, of

which Air

Botswana carries more

than 150,000 and has

a market share of well

over 50 per cent. It is

estimated that nearly

half of Air Botswana’s

passengers are business

travellers and nearly a

third are tourists.

From 31 May, Air

Botswana’s route network comprises

the following fl ights:

From Gaborone:

• 30 fl ights a week to Johannesburg

• Three fl ights a week to Harare

• Eight fl ights a week to Maun

• Three fl ights a week to Kasane.

From Maun, the airline offers seven

OKAVANGO DELTA22

The Okavango Delta is the best

known and most visited tourist

attraction in Botswana.

Access to the Delta is via Maun, with

its frequent fl ights to Gaborone and

Johannesburg and its fl eet of light

aircraft that fl y guests directly to their

bush camps.

The Okavango was once part of Lake

Makgadikgadi. The Delta has no

outlet to the sea and as a result must

to empty its waters into the Kalahari

Desert. It is easily the world’s biggest

inland delta.

Each year, during and shortly after the

rainy season, the Delta irrigates about

15,000 sq km of desert. However,

the high temperatures of the Kalahari

ensure much of this excess water

quickly evaporates.

This seasonal fl ooding

commences midsummer in

the north and ends a few

months later in the south

of the Delta. This results in

water rising in the north as

it recedes in the south in

summer, and rising in the

south as it recedes in the

north in winter.

The overall impact of this fl ooding is

benign, with fl oodplains and islands

disappearing under the rising water

and then reappearing in an ever-

changing landscape at the end of each

wet season.

Depending on the season, the

Okavango hosts a wide variety of

game: elephant, buffalo, rhino (black

and white) and hippo as well as the big

cats (lion, cheetah and leopard) and

other predators such as hyenas and

wild dogs. The Delta also boasts over

400 bird species.

The Moremi Game Reserve, which

makes up about a quarter of the

Delta’s total land area, forms a

contiguous area with the Chobe

National Park and is a mix of wetland

and desert.

LICENSING OF EXTERNALLY BASED COMPANIES

The Department of Tourism hereby

notifi es all externally based

companies that, in accordance

with the Tourism (Amendment of

Schedule) Order 2007, all externally

based companies that bring tourists

into Botswana must be licensed

under Category I. In accordance with

the schedule, the Category I licence

is for “externally based companies

who offer tourism-related activities

within Botswana. They may trans-

port tourists along main roads and

utilise public facilities. Holders are not

allowed to conduct their own safaris

into the game reserves or national

parks, but may hand over the tourists

to a Botswana-licensed operator if

they wish to utilise these facilities”.

GUIDES

In the past, the Department of Tourism

has deferred the implementation of

this category because holders were

required to ensure that the vehicles

which transported their passengers

were driven by professional guides.

This is no longer a requirement.

All foreign-based operators are

advised, therefore, that the Depart-

ment of Tourism will implement the

Category I licence with effect from

1 June 2009 and no foreign-based

operators will be allowed to enter the

country without this licence.

AGENCY PLAYS KEY ROLE IN BOOSTING ECONOMY

AND CREATING JOBSFulfi lling a vital function as the

country’s main agency for

commercial and industrial develop-

ment is the Botswana Development

Corporation Ltd (BDC).

The BDC, wholly owned by the govern-

ment, offers fi nancial assistance to

both foreign and local investors who

submit viable projects.

In addition, the corporation gives its

backing to projects that can generate

sustainable employment and for those

that enhance the skills of the local

workforce. BDC is also charged with

encouraging citizens to participate

directly in business ventures.

BDC also supports projects if they:

• Use locally available resources

• Make products for export or substi-tutes imports

• Foster close links with local industry

• Contribute to the development of Botswana’s existing resources and overall economic development.

BDC does not aim to be a majority

stakeholder; but it may bear the major

burden of any development project

that proves to be in the national

interest.

Companies assisted by BDC include

Air Botswana, Bolux Milling, Botswana

Diamond Valuing Company, Botswana

Insurance Co, the International

Financial Services Centre, Kgalagadi

Breweries and the retailer Sefalana as

well as Car Rentals Botswana (oper-

ating under the Avis International

KEY ROLE

In the fi eld of development fi nance,

BDC has played a key part in the

sustained growth of the property

market through its wholly owned prop-

erties and partnerships. The Property

Division has a mandate to develop and

manage hotel, residential, commercial

and industrial properties. These include

the Gaborone International Conven-

tion Centre, the Riverwalk Shopping

Complex, an expansion of the Phaka-

lane Estates

development

and infra-

structure

development

at Fairgrounds

in Gaborone.

The division also monitors a portfolio

of property development loan facili-

ties held with subsidiary, affi liate and

non-affi liate companies, through part-

nerships or joint venture developments.

DIVERSIFICATION

The strategy is aimed at developing

new businesses that are commercially

viable and sustainable. They must

also contribute to the growth and

economic diversifi cation of Botswana.

With a mandate to develop the manu-

facturing sector, the Industry Division

has a key role to play in the diversifi ca-

tion of the economy.

The Agribusiness Division of BDC is

devoted to helping the nation’s agri-

cultural sector to grow and thrive.

Abu Camp, the flagship of Elephant Back Safaris’ operations in Okavango, has six Afro-Bedouin-style luxurious tents with en-suite bathrooms. Each has its own private elevated teak deck sculpted around sycamore figs or jackalberry trees.

The essence of the camp is the elephant herd. Guests are ‘introduced’ to the elephants shortly after arrival and are soon high in the saddle for morning and afternoon rides. Guests are invited to become part of the elephant herd during their stay, watching them being fed in the evenings, enjoying the frolics of the babies and accompanying them on foot as they move through the bush. In addition, guests are offered game viewing from open vehicles and mokoro trips.

Villa Okavango affords total privacy and luxurious relaxation for a maximum of four guests. The whole ambience of the villa is that of a luxurious private home in secluded splendour.

Seba Camp: This 16-bed camp boasts two family units each with two en-suite bedrooms and their own private swimming pools. The camp is also the base of one of the most fasci-nating elephant research projects in the area.

Nxai Pan is well known for its huge springbok population and once the rains have started, gemsbok, elephant and zebras migrate to the region. At this time zebra’s come in their thou-sands to drop their young at Nxai Pan. Extraordinarily large herds of giraffe’s can be seen with up to 30 in a group.

These large herds of zebras, springbok, and wildebeest attract many predators – lion, cheetah, jackal and both spotted and the elusive brown hyena, as well as the endangered wild dog and the secretive leopard. There are large numbers of bat-eared fox and raptors that prey on the rodents and reptiles. At times, rhino have also been sighted. Also to be seen are the eland, greater kudu and red hartebeest.

The eight environmentally adapted rooms are all solar powered and one of these rooms is a family room.

The Nxai Pan is in a national park, a very ecologically sensitive area and for this reason no night drives or off road driving is permitted.

Set in an amphitheatre of ebony and sausage trees on the southern tip of Chief’s Island, Stanley’s Camp borders the southern section of the Moremi Game Reserve.

This private concession is located by definition in seasonal delta. The floodwaters arrive around June, although there is often navigable water all year round thanks to the presence of the Boro River.

The area is home to a wide variety of big game including elephant, giraffe, hippo, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog and one of the largest buffalo populations in the Okavango Delta, which, in the dry season, can concentrate into a herd in excess of 2,000 head.

Stanley’s consists of eight classic-styled safari tents raised on wooden decking. Each unit offers en-suite facilities and a private deck. The main building is raised on decking and offers expansive views over the surrounding floodplains. The structure was built into the existing treeline, its main support being a large sausage tree.

After the summer rains – the Central Kalahari Game Reserve completely transforms as the blue sky fills with huge clouds, and the plains and pans burst with sweet grasses. This is one of the best game viewing areas in Botswana at this time of year and not many people to seem to aware of this – so the visitors are few.

The CKGR gets animals such as springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest in their thousands and is quite a sight to behold. Predators abound with plentiful lions – especially the famous Kalahari black-maned lion, cheetah, leopard and jackals. Brown hyenas and wild dogs are also found in the area.

Several species of antelopes make the trip to the sweet grasses of the CKGR which include the eland, springbok, steenbok, gemsbok, hartebeest, kudu and duiker. Honey badgers are regular visitors as well as ground squirrels and meerkats and many an hour can be wiled away watching these fascinating animals. This should be a definite inclusion to any Botswana itinerary.

The 8 environmentally adapted rooms are all solar powered and one of these rooms is a family room. The Tau Pan is in a national park, a very ecologically sensitive area and for this reason no night drives or off road driving is permitted.

The Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation was formed in 1991 with the aim of promoting wildlife conservation and environmental education for the children of Botswana. Today, it is a nation-ally recognised educational, conservation and tourist facility.

The first project of the foundation was the creation of the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in 1994 on 30 sq km of donated land outside Gaborone. In addition to naturally occurring animal species such as warthogs, steenbok, kudu and a variety of snakes, several species have been reintroduced, including zebra, giraffe, eland, ostrich, hippos and rhinos.

The reserve contains Botswana’s only wild cheetah transit station for the relocation of ‘problem’ cheetahs brought in by ranchers, and four young, orphaned African elephants who are being raised as a joint venture with the Serendib Elephant Orphanage.

The philosophy behind Mokolodi Nature Reserve is that income from tourism and the sustainable use of wildlife and natural resources is used to subsidise the conservation projects and the environmental education programme.
