Safe Walking Tips

• Always use pedestrian crossings. • Never assume that a driver can see you or will stop for you. Their vision may be

affected by the sun, poor light, parked cars or other distractions.• Remember that drivers take longer than usual to stop in the rain or on a wet road.• At intersections, check for turning vehicles before you leave the footpath and while you

are crossing the road.• Children up to ten years old should hold an adult’s hand in the car park, on the

footpath and when crossing the road.• Avoid using a mobile phone, head phones or other device while you are crossing the

road.• Watch out for bicycles.

Pedestrian Crossings (zebra crossings):

• are usually marked by white painted stripes on the road• may have zig zag lines marked on the road to alert drivers

they are approaching a crossing• help pedestrians cross the road safely

Signalised Pedestrian Crossings (at traffic lights):

• provide a set period of time for pedestrians to cross the road whilst vehicles are stopped at traffic lights

• alert pedestrians when to cross the road: the green man signal lights up and the audio beeping sound increases in pulse

• warn pedestrians to promptly complete their road crossing and alerts approaching pedestrians to not begin crossing the road when the red man signal flashes

• alert pedestrians to remain on the footpath and not cross the road when the static red man signal and slow audio beep appear

• rule that drivers turning left or right must give way to all pedestrians who are crossing the road the driver is entering.

Road Safety Tips: • For your safety all pedestrians should stop, look,

listen, think every time you cross the road. Wait until all vehicles have completely stopped before stepping onto the road.

• If the road beyond a pedestrian crossing is blocked, drivers must not drive onto the crossing.
