Why do we love the coasts?

• It’s warmer

• The beach

• For boating

Importance of the coasts1. Coasts make up 10% of the world’s land

surface2. 44% of world’s population live within 150km

of the coast; that’s just over 3 billion people3. 40% or world’s population live within 100km

of the coast; that’s 2.8 billion people4. Major coastal cities are Miami, Shanghai,

Lisbon, London, Amsterdam, Sao Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, New York, Los Angeles etc

5. Major industries at coasts are tourism, banking, farming, shipping, factories etc.

What are the main coastal processes shaping the coast?

• Weathering – The breaking up of rocks into smaller pieces.

• Mass movement – The sudden movement of material usually downhill.

• Erosion – The wearing away of rocks that have been weathered.

• Transportation - The movement of material from one place to another.

• Deposition – The laying down of material.
