InNSWtherearethreetypesofassessment:Assessment for, Assessment as, Assessment of Learning
• Assessmentforlearningisformativeassessmentandoccursthroughoutthelearningprocess.
• Assessmentaslearninginvolvesstudentreflectionontheirlearning.
• Assessmentoflearningisaformalorsummativeassessmenttaskwhichisstandards
referencedandcontributestowardsthestudent’sHSCmark.
ForthesuccessfulcompletionoftheHSCstudentsneedtodemonstratethattheycompleteallthe
courseoutcomes.Someoutcomesarepartofasummativeassessmentprocessandmarkedformally
whereasotheroutcomesaredemonstratedthroughformativeassessment.Notalloutcomeshaveto
besummativelyassessedbutthestudentmustdemonstratecompetencyorachievementinallcourse
outcomesandthisisgenerallyachievedthroughthesuccessfulcompletionofclasswork.
VocationalEducationandTraining(VET)courses• StudentsdonotreceiveanassessmentmarkforVETcourses.
• StudentsmayelecttoundertaketheoptionalwrittenHSCexamination.
• WorkplacementisamandatoryHSCrequirementofeachVETcourse.
• Foreachcourse,aminimumnumberof35hoursperyeararerequiredintheworkplace.

RulesandProceduresbooklet(HSCbooklet).
School based assessment tasks A. Youwillbegivenatleasttwoweekswrittennoticeforaformalassessmenttask.Youwillsignforthis
notificationwhichwillexplain:
a. thetypeoftask(e.g.in-class,submitted,performance,practical)
b. thetimingofthetaskorthetimeanddateduec. theweightingofthetask(e.g.20%)
d. theoutcomesbeingassessedande. theassessmentcriteria
f. instructionsforsubmission.
B. Inschoolexaminations,youmustfollowthesameproceduresasfortheHigherSchoolCertificate(pages16-19ofHSCbooklet).
Absence due to illness or misadventure Ifyouareawayonthedayofanassessmenttaskorexamination(illnessorinjury)orforsomereasonyour
performancehasbeenaffectedduringataskorexamination(misadventure)youshouldcompletethe
illness/misadventureform(page12ofthisbooklet)andgivetotheHeadTeacherforthatsubject.
Pleasenotethefollowing:
i. Illnessorinjury–meansyouaretoosicktoattendschool.ii. Misadventure–iswhensomethingout-of-the-ordinary(e.g.anaccident)hashappenedwhichis
beyondyourcontrolandyoubelieveyourperformanceinthetaskhasbeennegativelyaffected.
Extensions Ifastudenthaspriorknowledgeofacircumstancethatwillimpactontheirabilitytosubmitataskonthedue
dateorattendanin-classtask,testorexamination,theymustrequestanExtensionApplicationFormfromtheDeputyPrincipalorHeadTeacheroraccessitontheschool’swebsite.ThisformshouldbesubmittedtothefacultyHeadTeacheratleastfiveschooldaysBEFOREtheassessmenttaskduedate.
Appeals Studentshavetherighttoasktheirteachertoreviewamarkatthetimeataskisreturnedbutcannotappeal
againsttheteacher’sjudgement.
StudentscanappealtotheAPCSAppealsCommitteetoreviewastudent’srankorderonlyif:
• theweightingsspecifiedintheassessmentprogramarenotthosestatedbyNESA
• theweightingsfortasksarenotconsistentwiththosespecifiedbythepublishedpolicy
• therearecomputationalorclericalerrors.
Theschool’sAppealsCommittee,comprisingofthesecondaryDeputyPrincipal,thesubjectHeadTeacherand
anotherHeadTeacher,willinvestigatetheclaimbyreviewingandexaminingappropriaterecordsandreport
itsfindingstothestudent.
StudentsmayappealtoNESAiftheyconsidertheprocessedofthereviewwerenotcarriedout
properly(refertotheACEmanualontheNESAwebsite).

Penalties for not completing tasks, non-serious attempts or late submission Ifyoufailtomakeaseriousattemptataformalassessmenttaskorexamination:
a. youwillbegivenaformalwarningofanon-seriousattempt
b. berequiredtore-sitorre-submitthetaskandc. youmaybeawardedzeroforthetask.
Refertotheflowchartonpage10whichshowstheprocessforanNdetermination
Honesty, integrity and malpractice Itisimportantyouunderstandthathonestyandintegritymustbemaintainedandifyoudonotthenyouwill
becommittingmalpractice(pages8-9oftheHSCbookletandtheAllMyOwnWorksite).Plagiarism,aformof
malpractice,meanscopyingorusingworkthatisnotyourownanditischeating.Astudentguiltyof
malpracticewillhavetheirnamerecordedontheNESARegisterofMalpracticeforHSCassessmenttasksandanofficialN-Warningletterwillbeissued(pages8-10,14ofHSCbooklet).
Technology and Assessments Technologyfailureisnotavalidreasonforfailuretosubmitanassessmenttaskontime.
Studentsshould:
• continuallybackupallworkontheharddriveofyourcomputerandonanexternalportablestorage
media(suchasaUSBdrive).Youmightalsoconsideremailingittoyourself.
• Taskswhicharetobesubmittedelectronicallyshouldbecheckedwellbeforetheduedatetoensure
thatdatacanbeaccessedatschool.
• Checkthecompatibilityofyourhomesoftwarewiththeschool’stechnology.
• Saveacopyofthefinalversionofyourtasktoanemailaddressthatcanbeaccessedatschool(suchas
[email protected]),aswellasbringingittoschoolon
externalportablestoragemedia.
• Astudentpresentingworkproducedviacomputerorsubmittingworkonlinewhoexperiences
computer/technologydifficultiesorprinterfailuremustfollowtheseproceduresbyapplyingformisadventureonthedatethetaskwasdueby:
a. completingamisadventureform(fromthesecondaryDeputyPrincipalorHeadTeacherof
thatcourse)
b. presentingittotheHeadTeacherofthatsubjectbeforeschoolalongwithdocumentaryevidence,suchasanotefromhome
c. submittinganysavedworkonaUSBdriveand
d. submittinganyhardcopiesofdrafts,roughnotes,USB.
N Determination warning
Ifastudentisnotmeetingthecourserequirements(1,2or3onp.4ofthisbooklet)orfailstocompletean
assessmenttasktheyaregivenwhatistermedanon-completionwarning(orNcompletiondetermination).A
copyisalsopostedhome,whichoutlines:
a. anyissuesofconcernoroutstandingworkand
b. thedatebywhichstudentsshouldredeemtheoutcomesofthemissedwork.c. Ifastudentistobegivenanon-completion(‘N’)determinationbecauseoffailuretocompletetasks
whichcontributeinexcessof50percentofthefinalassessmentmarksinthatcourse,theprincipalwill
informNESA.

The ‘Warning Letter’ process Ifyouarenotworkingandifyouarenotattendingschoolandclassesregularly(i.e.above85%)youmaybeat
riskofnotmeetingtherequirementstogainyourHSC.Ifthisisthecasethenteacherswillgiveyouformal
warningsinwriting,asfollows:
a. Warning1–A‘FIRST’formalwarningletterwillbesentbyyourclassteacherandtheHeadTeacher
outliningworkthatistobecompletedandaduedate.Thisletterwillbehandedtothestudentanda
copypostedtotheparent/carer.
Iftheworkisnotcompletedand/orthereisnoimprovement,then:
b. Warning2–A‘SECOND’formalwarningletterwillbeissued,andaninterviewwillbeorganisedwith
theHeadTeacherandyourparent/guardian.
Ifthisworkisnotcompletedandthereisstillnoimprovement,then:
c. FINALWarning-YouwillbeinterviewedbytheDeputyPrincipalanda‘THIRDandFINAL’formal
warningletterwillbeissued.TheDeputyPrincipalwillorganiseaninterviewwithyourparent/carer.
Ifafterthesewarningsthereisstillnoimprovement,thePrincipalwillconductaninterviewwithyouand
yourparent(s)/carerwherethe‘N’determinationwillbeformallymade.
‘N’Determination
IfyoufailtocomplywithNESA’srequirementsfortheHigherSchoolCertificate,youwillreceivean‘N’
determination.ThismeansthatthecoursewillnotappearontheRecordofAchievementandinsomecases,
thiswillmeanthatyouwillbeineligiblefortheawardoftheHigherSchoolCertificate.

Disability Provisions and Adjustments
Studentswithadisability(evidence-based)maybeallowedarangeofadjustmentsfortasksand
examinations,includingtheHSCexamination.

Expulsion from school
Youneedtobeawarethatunsatisfactoryparticipationinlearningand/ornon-seriousattemptstomeet
courseobjectivesmayresultinexpulsionfromtheschool.IfthePrincipalisconsideringthisaction:
i. awarningletterwillbeissued
ii. acourseofimprovementwillbedevelopedand
iii. aninterviewwithyourparents/carerswilloccur.
HSC course completion criteria
You need to show evidence of:
1. following the course developed by NESA
2. applying yourself with diligence and sustained effort to the set tasks and experiences provided in the course by the school
3. achieving the course outcomes. ATTENDANCE of 85% or more
(HSC booklet page 12 and the online NESA ACE manual)
Ö in each of your subjects Ö the syllabus details Ö the content or information of classwork Ö completed all classwork and assessments
Ö diligence means hard work and applying yourself to all of your work all of the time Ö sustained effort means keep working consistently Ö set tasks = class work, activities and assessments Ö experiences = excursions and all activities Ö attending all classes
Ö following the teacher’s guidance in what is required in the course Ö succeed in completing classwork Ö completing assessments, tests and examinations successfully Ö work is handed in ON TIME!
Ö 85% or more attendance rate Ö full day absences = expectation of a parent/carer note and/or doctor’s certificate Ö late to school = note from parent/carer with a valid reason Ö leaving school early = note from parent/carer with a valid reason

Appeal is reviewed by APCS Appeals committee and student informed of decision made by
committee.
The principal advises that an N-determination may be made and the course/s no longer count towards the student’s pattern of study for RoSa
or HSC (whichever is applicable).
Work or assessment task completed. Mark

Head teacher rejects illness/misadventure
claim.
Student may appeal. Appeal form to be
submitted to DP or head teacher.
If a student has N warnings in two or more subjects an interview with secondary deputy, head teacher, year adviser, parents/carer and
student will take place to determine an appropriate plan of action to enable the
studentto successfully complete their HSC courses.
Work or assessment

(HSC)orRecordofSchoolAchievement(RoSA).VETcoursesaredesignedtodeliverworkplace-specific
skills andknowledge and cover awide rangeof careers and industries. VET courses for secondary
studentsaredevelopedbytheNSWEducationStandardsAuthority(NESA)andarebasedonnational
trainingpackages.
VET courses allow students to gain bothHSCorRoSAqualifications and a qualification recognised
throughoutAustralianaspartoftheAustralianQualificationFramework(AQF).Thesequalifications
are widely recognised by industry, employers and tertiary training providers e.g. TAFENSW and
Universitiesandwillassiststudentstomoveeasilybetweenvariouseducationandtrainingsectorsand
employment.
PublicSchoolsNSW,UltimooperatesasaRegisteredTrainingOrganisation(RTO)todeliverandassess
VETqualificationstosecondarystudents.
BoardDevelopedVETcoursesareclassifiedasCategoryBsubjectsandONLYONEmaycontributeto
thecalculationoftheAustralianTertiaryAdmissionRank(ATAR).ThesecourseshaveanoptionalHSC
examination. Students wishing to include a VET course in the ATAR calculation must sit the HSC
examination.
BoardDevelopedVETcourseshavespecifiedworkplacerequirementsand include industryspecific
mandatoryworkplacement(35hoursper120hoursofdelivery)oroccasionallysimulatedworkplace
hoursatschool.
BoardEndorsedVETcoursesdocounttowardstheHSCorRoSAbutdonothaveHSCexaminations
thereforedonotcountinthecalculationoftheATAR.BoardEndorsedVETCourseshaveeither
mandatoryorrecommendedindustryspecificworkplacement.
AssessmentinallVETcoursesiscompetencybased.Thestudentisassessedonwhattheycando(the
skills)andwhattheyknow(theknowledge)thatwillequipthemintheworkplace.Studentswhohave
successfullyachievedcompetencywillhavetheskillsandknowledgetheyneedtocomplete
workplaceactivitiesinarangeofdifferentsituationsandenvironments,toanindustrystandardof
performancethatisexpectedintheworkplace.
Competency-basedassessmentmaterialsaredesignedtoensurethateachlearnerhasachievedallthe
outcomes(skillsandknowledge).Competency-basedtrainingisbasedonperformancestandardsthat
havebeensetbyindustry.Studentswillreceivedocumentationshowingthecompetenciesachieved
fortheVETcourseundertaken.
Ifthestudenthasalreadycompletedpartofthecourseelsewhere,orhavepreviouslifeorwork
experienceintherelevantindustry,heorshemaybeeligibleforRecognitionofPriorLearning(RPL)
forpartofthecourse,orfor35HoursworkplacementintheHSCcourse.Thestudentdoesnothaveto
repeatthetrainingorassessmentbutmustproduceevidenceofcompetence(whichmaybe
demonstratedduringaskillsandknowledgeassessment).TheVETcommitteeconsistingoftheVET
teacher,VETCoordinatorandamemberoftheseniorexecutivewilldetermineifthestudentis
eligible.
IfastudenthascompletedaunitofcompetencywithanotherRTO(commonexamplesincludeawhite
cardcourse,firstaidcertificateorabaristacourse),andthestudentcansupplyevidenceofthesame
oranequivalentcompetency,credittransferisawarded.
