But I will detail the actions of “Lefty” Williamson later. It’s becoming obvious that President Paul’s kids are the most adorable offspring since Gary Coleman and Willis graced our living rooms. How is he so lucky? Maybe it’s because he does believe in many gods. (You won’t get that joke unless you were in attendance, so shame on you if you are confused.). Fittingly, Laura Roesch’s invocation centered on raising children and Bill Nance gave a Day Ten for his fifth grandchild. Terry William- son did one better, introducing not one, but two family members. Dan Berry then had us wonder- ing if Vectren was open because the entire work- force seemingly was in attendance, including visiting Kettering Rotarian Lynda Hoffman. Jerry Hauer reminded us about the ISUS Mercedes Smart Car raffle, and was later supported by David McDonald. Rotarians who are shy about the $100 “sticker price” are urged to team up to buy tickets. Sixty more need to be sold for the project to at least break even. Introductions ended with Thomas Lasley introducing his UD successor Dean Kevin Kelly. THIS WEEK AT ROTARY . . . Secretary Dave returned from a too-brief sabbatical and unfortunately started showing photos from the Bowling Chicks night out featuring Dona Vella, Amy Radachi, and Susie Weaver. One of the shots showed Dave’s left hand suspiciously close to the word “Chicks” on Suzy’s t-shirt. Hey, both men and women in the audience noticed, hence my suggestion of the new nickname “Lefty.” After much laughter had subsided, a scrambling Dave said he had been coun-seled by fellow bowlers “to work on his grip” (his words, not mine!) Susie surely was not one of those bowlers. Birthday boy Ron Smith admitted he passed a mile-stone and gave a Day Fifty. Brady Kress kicked in a c-note after it was revealed that he and Ken Neufeld discussed Memorial Hall in the press. Maybe it was because Brady offered to blow Ken a kiss that Mr. Neufeld decided to kick in $50 to put the matter to rest. (See how the aforementioned “heat inside” theme continues?) Bill Duncan kicked in some money for his bowling adventures. Rick Schwartz plugged David McDonald’s book. After Dave Wil-liamson’s urging, author David said one dollar of every book sold up to a million will go to ISUS. Speak-ing of such, Kirk Tyson became a Fred Smith fellow and was duly recognized. Ann Charles Watts is look-ing for respite hosts for our Rotary intern. Due to pre-vious mischievous observations Tom Maher was told by President Paul that maybe Tom shouldn’t bother applying. Mr. Neufeld returned to the mike to accept a $2,000 Rotary Foundation check on behalf of his leadership program with high school and college youth. Brother Victor Forlani thanked Rotarians who have partici-pated in the Walk The Talk forums over the years which have helped 4,000 students. Today’s speaker was Carl Chapman, Vectren’s CEO, who highlighted community partnerships, infrastruc-ture, and conservation. Vectren’s reach is significant- 17 counties in Ohio and more than 315,000 custom-ers. He is understandably proud of the Air Show spon-sorship and that the company foundation contributed $3.2 million to the community last year. Mr. Chapman said Vectren is transitioning from an energy company to a conservation company. He advocated for natural gas as the cleanest fossil fuel. He believes that shale gas could meet many energy needs as industry ex-perts estimate that there is a 100 year supply. Many had questions, one about compressed natural gas vehicles. The answer: those will not be feasible until a car manufacturer commits to it. Another query cen-tered on how the company could afford to advocate for reduced usage. As I learned, conservation is fine because of decoupling, where the fixed cost of the utility are separated from consumer usage. So in the-ory if less is consumed everyone can save. Overall an interesting presentation that came to a satisfying conclusion when President Paul dismissed us promptly at 1:15.

More Details to Come Soon

The Bowling Chicks Take on Poelking Lanes Poelking Lanes on Wilmington was the scene of fierce competi-tion on Monday August 9, rivaling the PBA champi-onship. Six Ro-tarians each con-tributed $100 to the Stivers Vet-eran’s History project for the opportunity to

bowl with the first ladies of the Dayton Rotary bowling league. Dave Williamson, Frank Scott, Kathleen Carlson, Bill Duncan, Dave Fitzsimmons and Michelle O’Neil (represented admirably by Marty Carlson) enjoyed the friendly rivalry offered by Amy Radachi, Dona Vella and Susie Weaver. The cheering section included Katrina Fitzsimmons and photographer Tom Maher. A friendly wa-ger was entered into by Bill Duncan and Dona Vella, with the loser owing a few dollars to the Fred Smith Foundation.
