Health and Safety Executive on-line help available.

You may use it already - but

did you know -.......

The Health & Safety Executive provide much useful information on their website www.hse.gov.uk

An example of this is HSE's 'Construction' section "What you need to know as a busy builder". Good, clear, simple advice about good and unacceptable practice.

Try http://www.hse.gov.uk/construction/areyou/builder.htm.

Another good source of information provided by HSE is the Bulletin service. CONSTRUCTION INFONET is for builders and contains a wealth of current information.

Tool Box Talk June – Sun & UV Protection

Feeling the heat? What can you do to keep your employees safe? As the start of the Summer creeps in, and as temperatures soar, many workers are spending days in unbearably warm offices or working outdoors in the blazing sunshine.

The health and safety of employees is the main priority, and it is the employers’ duty to ensure staff are comfortable and protected from harmful UV rays during the summer months. Actions you can take for employees working outdoors: • Reschedule work to cooler times of the day • Provide more frequent rest breaks and introduce shading to rest areas • Provide free access to cool drinking water • Introduce shading in areas where individuals are working • Encourage the removal of personal protective equipment when resting in safe areas to help encourage heat loss • Educate workers about recognising the early symptoms of heat stress • Can employees wear shorts on site? If the risk assessment requires protective clothing of any kind, this must be work or the work activity adjusted and assessed again

Actions you can take for employees working indoors: • Provide fans, e.g. desk, pedestal or ceiling-mounted fans • Ensure what windows can be opened • Shade employees from direct sunlight with blinds or by using reflective film on windows to reduce the heating effects of the sun • Site workstations away from direct sunlight or other situations or objects that radiate heat (e.g. plant or machinery) • Relax formal dress code – but you must ensure that personal protective equipment is provided and used if required • Allow sufficient breaks to enable employees to get cold drinks or cool down • Provide additional facilities, e.g. cold water dispensers (water is preferable to caffeine or carbonated drinks) • Provide air-cooling or air-conditioning plant

Meeting 12th July 2017

As part of the meeting we will be running a workshop to help members

bid for the CITB Skills and Training fund designed for SME’s

The group have spent most of the £25K that CITB gave us in January

2017 as so many of the members have been carrying out a lot of training,

therefore we won’t be able to offer the sizable discounts to members

when it finally runs out, (all training will then be at ex VAT therefore 20%

plus the negotiated discounts, still pretty good)

To fill the void we’d like to help you bid for the additional CITB funding

which will fully fund the training you bid for

I’ll bring forms; guidance notes; etc., so we can work on them next week,

below is a video on how to apply

https://www.citb.co.uk/funding/how-to-apply-for-funding/quick-guide-skills-and-training-application/

We will also be presenting details of the assessor training detailed above Along with an update on “Adopt a School” and the shared apprenticeship scheme Please come along to Nash Solicitors Board Room who are kindly hosting the meeting
