TALK ON OUR LADY OF FATIMA

Date: Thursday, July 13th Time: 9:15am Location: Considine Center (Room 1-6)

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima, Portugal. Brother Ryan will give a presentation on understanding Our Lady’s message and the so-called “secrets” of Fatima. [Who was the angel that also appeared? Did the sun really “dance”? What did Mary ask for?] The talk will last approximately 40 minutes with time for questions and discussion afterward.

Recently Pope Francis spoke very beautifully of the necessity for priests to have lay friends. His words come at a very good time, when some people are questioning why a priest and member of the laity would be good friends. Is it possible for them, a priest and a lay person to have a good, close friendship, based on love for Christ, and one that helps each to grow in the faith and in virtue? Yes, it is!

Here are Pope Francis’ words:

Lectio Divina Reflection: Today’s Gospel is Matthew 10:37-42. Where in your life is sin struggling to claim a victory over you? How can you die to this sin and be free to live for God? Lectio Divina open scripture for you to know God’s love for you. Contact Helen McCullagh 915-237-1595 for more information. Sessions resume in September.

“Lay people who offer priests true friendship, the pope said, “are like the home of Bethany, where Jesus entrusted his weariness to Martha and Mary, and, thanks to their care, was able to find rest and refreshment.”

When Jesus speaks of his “friends,” the pope noted, he points to a hard truth: “true friendship involves an encounter that draws me so near to the other person that I give something of my very self.”

Friends “stand at our side … they listen to us closely, and can see beyond mere words; they are merciful when faced with our faults; they are non-judgmental,” he said. “They do not always indulge us but, precisely because they love us, they honestly tell us when they disagree. They are there to pick us up whenever we fall.”

To be a true friend to priests means knowing how to “accompany and sustain them in faith, in fidelity to prayer and apostolic commitment,” the pontiff told lay men and women of Serra International.”

The Gloria & the Collect In the Penitential rite we take a long meaningful look at our fallen humanity and ask God to accept us as we see ourselves – human beings

who seek to see God more clearly in their lives and are asking that the mercy of God permeate our lives as we approach the mysteries of our Faith. We come to enter into a deeper experience with God and to recognize who God is in our lives, especially in revelation to a fallen world. Once the priest and congregation acknowledge their sins and ask God for forgiveness the priest acclaims the following formula:

“May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us of our sins and bring us all to everlasting life.” after which all acclaim, Amen.

After the conclusion of the penitential rite we have (on Sundays, Feasts, and Solemnities) the proclamation of the Gloria or Glory to God. This can either be recited or sung. If it is recited it is initiated by the Priest and if sung by the priest or cantor. The Gloria is prayer of praise that celebrates the Glory of God. The opening lines are taken from the praise of the angels at the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem: “Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests”. (Luke 2:13-14) The Gloria is seen as a preeminent example of a prayer of praise and is often called a doxology. The word doxology stems from the two Greek words doxa () meaning ‘glory’ and logos () meaning word. The two words give doxology its meaning – a word of praise. The Gloria allows the Church’s people to celebrate that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became man for our salvation. After the angelic opening the Gloria proceeds with a litany or scriptural titles for our Lord: Heavenly King, Almighty Father, Only Begotten Son, Lamb of God, the Holy One, The Lord. The structure of the Gloria which was originally composed in Greek takes its form from a form of prose known in the early Church as “private psalms” – prayers composed by faithful Christians after the style of the Biblical or Royal Psalms of King David. (The Mass, pg. 106) The Gloria became a part of the official liturgy of the Church at the Christmas liturgy around 128 A.D. and was initiated by Pope Telesphorus. This prayer of praise is used on all Sundays of the Church Year (except during Advent and Lent when the tone of the liturgy is more penitential and subdued) and on all feasts and solemnities of the Church Year that fall during the week. After the Gloria is concluded the priest calls all the faithful to prayer with the words “Let us pray”. A period of silence follows and the opening prayer of the mass (sometimes known as the ‘collect’) is then either recited or sung by the celebrant. All in the congregation respond with the affirmation Amen and all are seated for the continuation of the Liturgy of the Word with the readings of the Mass. Fr. JP
