PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION – 6th Grade Teacher/Aides Needed: The St. Pius X Parish School of Religion is looking for a 6th grade catechist/teacher and two 6th grade aides for the upcoming school year that begins September 10th. We use the “Be My Disciple” textbooks, along with guidebooks and will provide any training needed. Also, we have several openings for high school or adult aides. If you are an adult and do not have the PGC Class and fingerprinting, you will need to meet the Protecting God’s Children requirements by September. A high school aide (17 years old and younger) does not need PGC. If you have any questions, please feel free to call De Ann Bukowski at 614-648-9191.

SPX LATCHKEY: Please contact Beth Antommarchi, Director, at [email protected] for information and to register regarding the St. Pius X Latchkey Program. This is a wonderful after-school program, from 2:30-6:00 p.m., when school is in session. The program is certified by the Ohio Department of Education. There are three options to choose from and there are many activities available to your child. This is for any new incoming kindergartners and new or current families of the school who wish to register. Additional information is available on the bookcase in the vestibule of the church. Orientation will be held closer to school.

Project DAWN: It is no secret that there has been an overwhelming surge in opiate overdoses and fatalities within our communities. It is a devastating problem, and Mount Carmel wants to be part of the solution. Mount Carmel Outreach and the Mount Carmel Mobile Medical Coach have joined forces with Project DAWN (Deaths Avoided With Naloxone), a community-based overdose education and Narcan (naloxone) distribution program. The Project DAWN program provides Narcan kits free-of-charge to those without health insurance and limited financial means. Narcan is a safe medication that can reverse an overdose caused by prescription pain medication or heroin and save lives. For more information, visit http://www.mountcarmelhealth.

VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP WEEKENDS will be July 15/16 and July 29/30. Please consider volunteering to work the Festival. There are many jobs that need done with a variety of time slots to fit almost any schedule! This is an excellent way to meet new people and become acquainted with old friends while doing something to benefit the St. Pius Festival!

SODA POP SUNDAY – The Festival Committee is once again inviting everyone to donate a case of soda to the Festival. Ever wish your favorite drink was available at the concession stand, but were disappointed when it wasn’t there? Now you can make it available! Your donations will be sold at the Festival this year and will help decrease the amount of Coke we need to order and purchase prior to the event. We will accept any flavor or any size you wish to give – 2 liter bottles, 12 ounce cans, 20 ounce bottles, etc. Soda Pop collections will take place before and after Masses on July 15 and 16 and July 29 and 30. You may also drop off your donations in the Bride's Room at any time as well. Thank you for helping support our parish.

CALLING ALL ST. PIUS X BAKERS! The Dessert Booth (Bake/Cake Sale) at the Festival is in need of your favorite cakes, cookies, pies, brownies, cupcakes, etc. Please bring your baked goods to the school cafeteria Thursday, August 3rd, between 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 6:30-7:30 p.m. Or you can drop them off at the Dessert Booth on Friday, August 4th or Saturday, August 5th, during the Festival. If you have any questions or are unable to deliver them, please feel free to call Patricia Zeitman at 760-753-5173 or email her at [email protected].

$5,000 RAFFLE: This year, the “early bird” could win $$$! We are giving away the $50.00 and $75.00 raffle prizes between July 22nd and August 3rd, so turn in your raffle tickets and money to be eligible.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SPX FESTIVAL 2018: No – That’s not a misprint! This is a “heads up” to all of our parish pie bakers that the Festival Pie Contest will be held on a biannual basis. In 2018, our parish center will be completed and offer the perfect facility to showcase this culinary event.

SAINT OF THE DAY FOR JULY 7

AROUND TOWN CONTINUED.....

Blessed Emmanuel Ruiz and Companions (1804-1860)Blessed Emmanuel Ruiz and Companions’ Story:Not much is known of the early life of Emmanuel Ruiz but details of his heroic death in defense of the faith have come down to us.Born of humble parents in Santander, Spain, he became a Franciscan priest and served as a missionary in Damascus. This was at a time when anti-Christian riots shook Syria and thousands lost their lives in just a short time.Among these were Emmanuel, superior of the Franciscan convent, seven other friars, and three laymen. When a menacing crowd came looking for the men, they refused to renounce their faith and become Muslims. The men were subjected to horrible tortures before their martyrdom.Emmanuel, his brother Franciscans and the three Maronite laymen were beatified in 1926 by Pope Pius XI.

Reflection: The Church in Syria has known persecution throughout its history. Yet it has produced saints whose blood was shed for the faith. Let us pray for the Church in Syria.
