INTER BIKE - AIM

Set up a cross-border cycle network between Slovenia and Italy with cycle infrastructure and intermodal connections.

PROJECT RESULTS

- establishment of cycling paths sections on the cycling route Ravenna-Koper-Kranjska Gora (500 km) and cross-border connections

- data base (cycle tracks, intermodality, natural sites and cultural heritage of special interest, cycle services, accomodation)

- common cycling tracks and sites marking guidance

- cycling brochure with maps, promotional brochure

IDENTIFIED WEAKNESSES• unsustainable urban transport:

– dense traffic (summer) – air pollution – modal split: car – most frequently used in

daily migrations– lack of parking lots– weak infrastructure for sustainable mobility:

• cycle tracks• weak services for cyclists• poor public transport• weak or non-existent intermodal transport

OPPORTUNITIES

• lack of cycle networks in the South Primorska region and cross-border connections (Parenzana – Trieste) – no funds available

• no accomodation in hinterlands • lack of tourist products (thematic paths)• common quality standards are needed• joint management of the tourism

destination

POTENTIAL PROJECTS CAMP Slovenia, Regional Strategy of Sustainable Tourism Development

• improvement of infrastructure (regional and cross-border cycle network, accomodation, parking lots, define common marking system for cycle tracks and footpaths)

• development and improvement of tourism products and services (special services for cyclists, thematic and footpaths, local products, introduction of environmental and business quality systems – EMAS, Eco-label)

• renovation of cultural heritage and protection of natural sites

• establishment of systems for monitoring and measuring sustainable development of tourism

• establishmentment of joint management of tourist destination
