Dear Third Ward Resident, I would like to thank everyone who participated in last month's City- wide Clean and Green Day. All of your efforts made a huge difference in beautifying our community. The 3rd Ward was proud to support the efforts of the following groups by supplying shovels, rakes, gloves, bags and other materials for their clean and greens: The Prairie Point Condo Association, Progressive Baptist Church, Wentworth Gardens, Bronzeville Retail Initiative and Bronzeville Neighborhood Collaborative, Oakwood Boulevard Neighborhood Association, Sankofa Group, Catholic Charities, the 4500 Indiana Block Club, Firman Community Services, Progressive Community Center and Vision House. I would also like to single out my Ward Superintendent Anthony Johnson, who, true to his helping nature, went above and beyond to deliver clean and green materials and coordinate pick ups with participants. AJ does a tremendous job keeping our ward beautiful every day; we are lucky to have someone with his dedication. I know many more of you contributed to the beautification of our neighborhoods, either on Citywide Clean and Green Day or on other occasions, and for that I thank you as well. May also marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Later in this newsletter you will read about how to participate in the popular and critically important Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday, May 10th. But there is more you can do on a regular basis to protect you and your family members. Both Mercy and St. Bernard Hospitals offer free or reduced cost mammograms. Limiting your consumption of alcohol or exercising for 4 or more hours a week are thought to help prevent breast cancer. So is avoiding obesity, especially in older women. May is filled with great events, important announcements and fantastic opportunities. I hope that this letter provides you a glimpse into what is going on in our communities. Arbor Day Celebration

Alderman Dowell and residents of the 4700 block of South Prairie Avenue, worked along side Mayor Rahm Emanuel to celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, April 24th by planting nearly a dozen trees on Prairie Avenue. This block like so many blocks across Chicago, lost many of its trees due to the infestation of Emerald ash borer. A wide scale tree planting effort is scheduled for this year with the goal of planting more than 11,800 trees in City neighborhoods. There are approximately 3.5 million trees in the City of Chicago, covering more than 17% of the total land area. If you need a tree trimmed, removed or planted, please call 3-1-1 with your request.

Phillips High School Students Receive $5 Million in Scholarships

Students at Wendell Phillips High School have been doing some wonderful things! Their dedication to hard work and personal growth resulted in this year's graduating class receiving $5 million in scholarship funds. That is up from $2.6 million from last year. Additionally, 314 colleges have extended acceptance letters to approximately 101 seniors, meaning that Phillips' young men and women have choices when it comes to college enrollment. Amazingly, multiple students have received over five-hundred-thousand dollars in scholarships each, including the top recipient at the school who was offered over eight-hundred and thirty thousand dollars in scholarships. Alderman Dowell would like to congratulate all of the Phillips High School students on their achievements, and extend her heartfelt thanks to the school's administration, faculty, staff, volunteers and parents for all of their work making this school year a great success.

Beethoven Elementary School Gets New Principal After an exhaustive search which covered many qualified candidates, the Local School Council for Ludwig Van Beethoven Elementary School has selected Dr. Marcus Alexander as their newest principal. Lets all welcome Dr. Alexander to our community and wish him the best as he delivers the educational supports Beethoven students, faculty and parents deserve. A native son of the South Side of Chicago, Principal Alexander was born in Altgeld Gardens and was a product of Brozeville's own Chicago Military Academy. Following his six years of service in the US Army, Dr. Alexander became a public school administrator. For the past six years, Dr. Alexander has been with CPS in various building and district-level roles, most recently serving as the Network Data Strategist for Network 7. Alderman Dowell would like to thank the LSC, parents and community for all the work they put in to get this very important hire done so that our students have the best chance to succeed.

Mollison School is a Candidate for the International Baccalaureate Program Irvin C. Mollison Elementary is going through the process to become an International Baccalaureate (IB) school for its middle school students. The IB program prepares students to be global citizens through a rigorous academic curriculum based on world wide teaching standards. Students would take part in math, science, social studies/history, foreign language, English, design, music, art, PE and yes recess. The IB program has been very successful across Chicago - including here in the 3rd Ward at Ida B. Wells Elementary and Bronzeville Scholastic Institute - raising the bar for achievement among students. This is a great opportunity for the Mollison students.

Chicago Reports Record Tourism in 2014

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Don Welsh, President and CEO of Choose Chicago announced that Chicago broke the 50 million visitor mark for the first time in 2014 setting a new visitation record estimated at 50.2 million visitors. This is a 3.5% in-crease over 2013. Chicago's tourism industry is directly responsible for continued job growth, direct spending and tax reve-nue. Since 2010, the tourism and hospitality industries have added 9,800 jobs, generating $13.7 billion in direct spending by visitors and $871 million in total tax revenue. Over the past three years, the City of Chicago has gone from fifth to first in the country as a destination for meetings and conventions. According to Cvent Supplier Network, an event technology company that ranks 50 U.S. cities based on meeting and event booking, Chicago has leapfrogged perennial convention leaders Las Vegas and Orlando since 2012. In 2015, Choose Chicago has laid out an ambitious plan to continue expanding tourism in Chicago. Some of the highlights of the plan include: Opening a 4th office in Chengdu, China; launch ChooseTwo, an expanded partnership outreach program for new and diverse partners; integrate Choose Chicago into the State of Illinois economic development strategy; and successfully execute high profile events like the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament, the NFL Draft and ITU World Triathlon Grand Final.

Historic Firehouse Restaurant at 1401 S. Michigan to be Rebuilt The owner of the Chicago Firehouse Restaurant at 1401 S. Michigan, which was tragically damaged due to a fire late last year, has proposed to rehabilitate the property and reopen the restaurant. Because the restaurant is located within a historic building, the owner is required to submit a plan for review and approval to the Permit Review Committee of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks. This ensures not only that the building safe and up to code, but that the rehab maintains the building's historic charm. Submitting a plan to the Commission on Chicago Landmarks is the first step in getting the popular

restaurant reopened. As more news about the Chicago Firehouse Restaurant comes available, Alderman Dowell will be sure to announce it publicly.

Open Space Proposal Will Preserve 42nd Street Garden With the support of Alderman Dowell, the 42nd Street Community Garden will be preserved and enhanced for local residents under plans approved by the City of Chicago. The garden at 42nd St. and Vincennes Ave. will be preserved for ongoing community use through its sale by the City to the NeighborSpace land trust, which provides liability insurance, infrastructure upgrades, and maintenance services for local gardening groups. NeighborSpace has a long, positive history managing community gardens on behalf of local residents, and has worked with the City of Chicago to preserve dozens of gardens across the City. The sale of the land to NeighborSpace ensures that the garden remains open for community use in perpetuity, meaning it will remain open space forever and can not be developed.

King Drive to S. Vincennes Ave. on Monday, April 20th. This project will rehabilitate the existing sewer in your area without the conventional digging method. This sewer rehabilitation will minimize, if not eliminate, street cave-ins due to failure of old sewers. In addition, it will bring better drainage to your area and may help alleviate flooding during heavy rains. During work days, mobilization will start at 6:00 am. Actual work will begin at 7:00 am. Work is expected to be completed by 7:00 pm. No Parking signs will be posted in the immediate area of work a day before any scheduled work. Oil Tanker Rail Emergency Response Plan

The City of Chicago is proud of its heritage as the central hub of transportation in America. From our two airports, the interstate and thousands of miles of train tracks, this complicated network of transportation systems keeps Chicago economically vibrant. However, as is the case with any other network, our City's railways could pose a unique danger to residents should an accident occur. With that in mind, the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) has put in place an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) which outlines the City's response to incidents that require coordination with multiple agencies like the County, State, and Federal Governments or the private sector. The EOP addresses the need for coordinated emergency responses and operations to adequately prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters of all types including hazardous materials traveling by rail. The EOP addresses pre-deployment of resources, rapid deployment, warning and communications, evacuation and sheltering, and post-disaster response and recovery, all while clearly defining each stakeholder's responsibilities. Rest assured, the City, under the leadership of OEMC has a plan in place to protect residents in case of a rail emergency.

Zipcars in the 3rd Ward Zipcar offers members the option to share communal cars parked in convenient, publicly accessible locations across the city for as low at $7 a month. You can drive cars by the hour or day, with gas an insurance included. Hourly driving rates start between $8-10 depending on the type of vehicle. Here is how it works. Join Zipcar, and once you are approved, you'll get your Zipcard which unlocks hundreds of cars, trucks and vans across the city. When you want to drive, you can reserve a Zipcar for a couple hours a day or a whole day, online or on your phone via the Zipcar app. Both the online and the app reservation systems show you where the Zipcars in your neighborhood are located. Walk to the car and hold your Zipcard to the windshield which unlocks the car doors and drive! When you are done with the car, return it to the same parking spot and you are all done. Zipcar is looking to expand into the 3rd Ward, with its first two cars being placed at the47th Street Green Line parking lot in May. As other cars find homes in the ward, Alderman Dowell will be sure to announce their locations.
