APPROACH TO GOD Let us keep silence as we prepare for worship.

TOWER CHIMES (10:00) Norma MacKinley Smith

    CANDLE LIGHTER (10:00) Allie Columbus

MEDITATION “When God speak to humanity, God always speaks as a child.” M. Luther

PRELUDE Of the Father’s Love Begotten W. Held Divinum Mysterium (1914 – 2015)

CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Hear us, O Shepherd of Israel. People: You lead your people gently and kindly. Leader: You sent us your light and your salvation. People: Hear us and restore us, Lord God Almighty. Leader: Help us to hear you and know you are here. People: Jesus Christ is our Lord, our light, and our salvation. All: Let us praise and worship him together.

*HYMN #109 Watchman, Tell Us Of the Night ABERYSTWYTH

*OPENING PRAYER Holy God, who are the Most High Lord of all, you chose to be known through small and humble souls who expect everything from you. You chose Mary from Nazareth, to become the mother of your Son Jesus. Through your Holy Spirit make us aware of the poverty of our hearts, that we may be open to you and welcome you, be ready, like Mary, to serve you and your plans, and expect everything from you. Come to us and give yourself to us through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*PRAISE 131/2 Isaiah ‘twas Foretold It ES IST EIN ROS’ ENTSPRUNGEN Isaiah twas foretold it, The Rose I have in mind, With Mary we behold it, The Virgin Mother kind.

To show God’s love aright, She bore to men a Savior, when half spent was the night.

  • LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE OF JOY Reader 1: We light the third candle of Advent. (The third advent candle is lit.) Reader 2: The light will come into our world opening our eyes to see. The

Word of God will come into the world unstopping our ears to listen.

Reader 1: Mary responded to the light shining upon her. Even though her life was not easy, she heard God's voice and said yes. Her song was a prayer that would uplift those who were downtrodden. Her lyrics shattered the proud and called the world to change. She would bear within her the promised child, Jesus, the Light of the World. This Advent, we respond to God’s call as well. People: Gracious God, we give thanks for Mary and her example.

Help us to be like her to say yes to your call and rejoice. Amen.

    GREETINGS

PROCLAMATION OF GOD'S WORD SCRIPTURE READINGS Isaiah 35:1-10 The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus, it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, ‘Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.’ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people; no traveller, not even fools, shall go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

  • Luke 1:46-55 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.’

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

SERMON “Among the Wild Flowers” Rev. Jami D. Boyle (8:30)

*HYMN #111 Of the Father’s Love Begotten DIVINUM MYSTERIUM

RESPONSE TO GOD'S WORD *ADVENT LITANY: THE DAY OF JUBILEE Leader: Happy are those who have the God of Israel as their helper. He is the one who keeps every promise forever, who gives justice to the oppressed.” (Psalm 146:5,7) People: In the day of Jubilee, the Lord brings justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. Leader: In the day of Jubilee, the Lord sets the prisoners free and opens the eyes of the blind. People: In the day of Jubilee, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down and watches over strangers and widows and orphans. Together: In the day of Jubilee, all creation reaps a rich harvest and knows the joy of the Lord.
