Third Sunday
of Advent DECEMBER 15, 2019
Isaiah 35:1-6a,10; James 5:7-10;
Matthew 11:2-11
Today is often called “Gau-
dete” Sunday; the word means
“Rejoice!” It is the first word of
the Latin Entrance Antiphon for
today. Once again, our first read-
ing gives the “signs” of the times
of the Messiah: The desert will
bloom; the wasteland will be
fertile; the feeble will be strong;
the blind will see, and so on. But,
of course, that didn’t happen.
John the Baptist, in prison
now, sends word to Jesus: “Are
you the one, or should we look
for someone else?” He wanted
Jesus to make everything perfect
now. He wanted him to start
acting like the Messiah whom
they expected.
Jesus tells of some people who
have been cured. But he pro-
claims blessed the person who
does not lose faith because he is
not the kind of Messiah they
want.
What happens when things go
wrong for us? What happens
when we don’t get our private
miracle? Jesus is still Messiah!
Perfection must await his
“Second Coming.”
Meanwhile, our second read-
ing urges us to be patient. Don’t
lose faith and don’t grumble.
Come out of yourself and your
own little world. Renew your
hope and be a person of hope
and joy. Show by your life that
Jesus is Messiah! --Msgr. William Carr

Fr. Don’s DoodlingsIf you attended Mass at St. Francis last weekend you had the pleasure of
meeting Dr. Brian McGee, the new president of Quincy University. Somemonths ago when Dr. McGee was here for Mass I invited him to find a weekendwhen he could speak at all of our Masses and introduce himself to our parishcommunity.
Dr. McGee told us that he has lived in Texas,Louisiana, Kentucky, Ohio and most recently inSouth Carolina. He also told us that he camefrom the Galesburg and Peoria area, and is happyto be back in the area he called home. As briefas that introduction had to be, it was exciting ina number of ways.
For one thing, Dr. McGee is now no strangerto us here. You could pick up his enthusiasmabout both Quincy University and St. FrancisParish. I find him refreshing also in identifyinghimself as a Catholic who is practicing his faith. He has already come to the Parish Office andregistered as a parishioner here, and wants to be active in whatever ways he canmanage.
Having heard Dr. McGee speak on other occasions, I can also tell you that Iam impressed with his comprehensive vision regarding the future of theUniversity. He plans to go out and recruit students from lots other places, andhe appears to have the energy to do it. But he is quick to add that he would liketo see a lot more students come from our own Quincy households. I find thatexciting. It seems to me that way too few of our own youth are takingadvantage of this great university that’s right here, so easily accessible, affordable, and Catholic.
I’m also happy to know that Dr. McGee is already working to have a goodrelationship with the faculty and staff of the university. And he is veryinterested in having collaboration with St. Francis Parish and School. Alreadythere are QU students who are doing student teaching in our school. And we’rehoping to find other ways of having them involved here.
One of Dr. McGee’s final remarks last weekend was about providing anexcellent education for youth, and a Catholic atmosphere (or words to thateffect). In today’s world I find that hopeful and exciting, and I hope you do too.
Hand-Outs There are lots of Parish Calendars for 2020 by the church entrances.
Be sure to pick one up.There are also some copies of “Franciscan Reporter” available for the taking.
