Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Jerome,

Pax Christi semper vobiscum! Last weekend I addressed our families as regards our

communal responsibility to introduce our Religious Education students to a meaningful encounter with Jesus Christ. Our liturgical events and communal fellowship are breeding grounds for those encounters apart from works of mercy that we ought to be involved with, especially with those who are most in need. I hope that I was heard and understood.

This weekend, I would like to highlight two very common expressions of our Catholic devotions which many of us tend to do each time we come to church for worship. First, the lighting of the votive candles at the devotional shrines. Second, the writing of our prayer petitions in the Book of Prayer Petitions by the statue of Saint Jerome. My intent to underline these faith expressions is simply to encourage more awareness of the value of our devotional practices. I wonder if we are aware that leaving a lighted candle at the shrine of Our Lady or of our Patron Saint means also a continuation of our prayer as we leave the church. The lighted candles represent the spirit of the individual who burns the candle for the sake of communication with God and the saints. In addition, those candles are meant to remind us also of our prayers that are presented before God through the intercession of the saints who are our companions along our spiritual journey. Those lighted candles are meant to instill a spirit of hope in us while we believe that our perseverance and patience will bring us also to a certain positive conclusion in God’s time.

To digress a little, you have most likely realized that there is always a flickering red-lighted candle by the Tabernacle on the high altar of our sanctuary. We call it the sanctuary lamp. This lighted candle has a different meaning than that of the votive candles that we light before the shrines. The sanctuary lamp reminds us of the sacramental presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus’ presence is meant to be acknowledged as we genuflect or by making a reverent profound vow. The sanctuary lamp signifies the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. Thus, the sanctuary area is meant to be revered and respected by not converting the space into a photo studio after weddings, Quinceañeras, baptisms and other liturgical events. Of course, it does not mean that no one can take photos of our beautiful sanctuary; it simply is a matter of being conscious of the space where we could take our photos without losing our respect for the real presence of Jesus Christ. As for me, taking photos by the steps of the sanctuary is permissible except when people begin parading unconsciously and irreverently about the sanctuary. In addition, the Altar of Sacrifice is not meant to be an arm rest during picture taking nor to be treated like an ordinary table where coats and purses are placed. Honoring God is of utmost importance.

Why all this consciousness about reverence? Well,

Estimados feligreses y amigos de San Jerónimo, ¡Pax Christi semper vobiscum! El fin de semana pasado me dirigí a nuestras familias

con respecto a nuestra responsabilidad comunitaria de presentarles a nuestros estudiantes de Educación Religiosa un encuentro significativo con Jesucristo. Nuestros eventos litúrgicos y nuestra comunión comunal son un caldo de cultivo para esos encuentros, aparte de las obras de misericordia con las que deberíamos estar involucrados, especialmente con aquellos que más lo necesitan. Espero haber sido escuchado y entendido.

Esta vez, me gustaría destacar dos expresiones muy comunes de nuestras devociones católicas que muchos de nosotros solemos hacer cada vez que vamos a la iglesia para adorar. Primero, la iluminación de las velas votivas en los santuarios. Segundo, la escritura de nuestras peticiones de oración en el Libro de Oraciones cerca de la estatua de San Jerónimo. Mi intención de subrayar estas expresiones de fe es simplemente alentar una mayor conciencia del valor de nuestras prácticas devocionales. Me pregunto si somos conscientes de que dejar una vela encendida en el santuario de Nuestra Señora o de nuestra Patrona también significa una continuación de nuestra oración al salir de la iglesia. Las velas encendidas representan el espíritu del individuo que quema la vela en aras de la comunicación con Dios y los santos. Además, esas velas están destinadas a recordarnos también nuestras oraciones que se presentan ante Dios a través de la intercesión de los santos que son nuestros compañeros en nuestro viaje espiritual. Esas velas encendidas están destinadas a infundir el espíritu de esperanza en nosotros mientras creemos que nuestra perseverancia y paciencia nos llevarán también a una cierta conclusión en el tiempo de Dios.

Para divagar un poco, lo más probable es que usted se dio cuenta que siempre hay una vela roja encendida junto al Tabernáculo en el altar mayor de nuestro santuario. Lo llamamos la lámpara del santuario. Esta vela encendida tiene un significado diferente al de las velas votivas que encendemos ante los santuarios. La lámpara del santuario nos recuerda la presencia sacramental de Jesús en el Santísimo Sacramento. La presencia de Jesús debe ser reconocida a medida que hacemos una genuflexión o al hacer un voto reverente y profundo. La lámpara del santuario significa la presencia real de Jesucristo en la Sagrada Eucaristía. Por lo tanto, el área del santuario debe ser venerada y respetada al no convertir el espacio en un estudio fotográfico después de bodas, quinceañeras, bautizos y otros eventos litúrgicos. Por supuesto, no significa que nadie pueda tomar fotos de nuestro hermoso santuario; simplemente se trata de ser conscientes del espacio donde podríamos tomar nuestras fotos sin perder nuestro respeto por la presencia real de Jesucristo. En cuanto a mí, es permisible tomar fotos por los escalones del santuario, excepto cuando la gente comienza a desfilar inconsciente e irreverentemente sobre el santuario. Además, el Altar del Sacrificio no está destinado a ser un reposabrazos durante la toma de fotografías ni a ser tratado como una mesa ordinaria donde se colocan abrigos y carteras encima. The Presentation of the Lord

¿Por qué toda esta conciencia sobre la reverencia? Bueno, todo gira en torno al concepto de lo sagrado, consagrado y extraordinario. Parte de nuestra fe católica cristiana es nuestra conciencia del espacio sagrado que se aparta para la adoración y al encontrarnos con el Dios vivo.

La otra consideración importante que mencioné anteriormente y que me gustaría transmitir a todos es el uso de las Peticiones del Libro de Oración. Sí, cada vez que escribe sus intenciones de oración, toda la comunidad también reza por usted. Las Peticiones del Libro de Oración están destinadas a apoyarnos en nuestras oraciones mientras llamamos la atención de Dios para escuchar nuestras súplicas. Las oraciones escritas están destinadas a permitirnos expresar físicamente nuestros pensamientos y sentimientos para que otros también puedan compartir los anhelos de nuestro corazón. De hecho, el significado de la comunidad cristiana se trata de la interdependencia. Es una actitud consciente, ya que permitimos que otros sean parte de nuestras empresas. Nuestra jornada de vida se vuelve significativa cuando oramos profundamente ante Dios mientras ponemos toda nuestra confianza en Él. Sí, Dios escucha nuestras oraciones. Escribir nuestras intenciones de oración es una expresión de fe. También es una garantía de que nuestros hermanos y hermanas nos ayudan mientras se comunican con Dios en la vida cotidiana.

Estos pensamientos nunca son nuevos. Quizás los haya escuchado en el pasado. Estos son simplemente recordatorios de que detrás de nuestras prácticas católicas hay partes y conexiones que nos hacen uno en la presencia de Dios.

La lectura del Evangelio de este fin de semana narra cómo Jesús llamó a Sus primeros discípulos, en donde podemos ver la forma en que Él quiere compartir Su vida con los demás. Es en estar en comunión con Dios que encontramos el significado de nuestras vidas. ¿Encuentras el suyo significativo?

everything revolves around the concept of the holy, consecrated and extraordinary. Part of our Catholic Christian faith is our consciousness of the sacred space that is set apart for worship and as we encounter the living God.

The other important consideration that I mentioned earlier and would like to convey to everyone is the use of the Book of Prayer Petitions. Yes, each time you write your prayer intentions, the whole community prays for you also. The Book of Prayer Petitions is meant to support us in our prayers as we call God’s attention to listen to our pleading. The written prayers are meant to allow us to physically express our thoughts and feelings so that others may also share the longings of our heart. In fact, the meaning of Christian community is about interdependence. It is a conscious attitude as we allow others to be a part of our undertakings. Our life journey is made meaningful when we pray profoundly before God while we put our complete trust in Him. Yes, God listens to our prayers. Writing our prayer intentions is an expression of faith. It is also an assurance that we are assisted by our brothers and sisters while they communicate with God in the ordinariness of daily life.

These thoughts are never new. Perhaps you have heard them in the past. These are simply reminders that behind our Catholic practices are the bits and pieces of connections that make us one in the presence of God.

The Gospel reading this weekend narrates how Jesus called His first disciples, wherein we can see the manner in which He wants to share His life with others. It is in being in communion with God that we find the meaning our lives. Do you find yours meaningful?

Epifanio Cortés – Epifanio has been a member of the parish since 1982. His involvement in the music ministry has been an important part of his life. So many of our choir members started at one time or another in Epifanio's choir, learning to sing or learning their instruments under his patient direction. For years, also, Epifanio has been directing the Mañanitas choir which sings to Our Lady of Guadalupe on the morning of December 12th. He has shared his passion for music with his family. Epifanio has played an important part during the transition and reorganization over the past couple of years. Let us acknowledge Epifanio’s generosity and ongoing willingness to be a collaborator of our parish mission. Isaac Mendoza – Isaac Mendoza has been a parish member for the past 20 years. He has always been interested in making parish events happen, such as the highly successful Fiestas Patrias held a little over a year ago. For years Isaac has been involved in the organization of the Christmas Posadas. His expanded connection with various music groups, business establishments and parish families is a tremendous help in making most of our events joyfully celebrated. Isaac continues to witness to his faith by sharing his life and consciousness of the presence of God with his wife and children. He serves our parish by bringing our people together as a great example to all of community-building. Caroline Dawson – Caroline Dawson came into our parish ministry as a highly dedicated volunteer. Her involvement in the ministry of the parish began over the last two years as a parish

office volunteer. There is never a dull moment with Caroline--

she will always engage other people into lively conversation while tasks are being accomplished. Energy and initiative are never lacking in Caroline. Her love for the sick and her passion for the ministry is noteworthy. Please join me in thanking Caroline for her dedication and love for the mission of Jesus Christ at St. Jerome Parish. Grupo Guadalupano - Grupo Guadalupano may be characterized simply as “hard-working.” Their willingness to work together and to raise funds for the parish and produces such great food at the same time is worthy of our recognition. The Grupo Guadalupano regularly hosts our parish Food Sales. The leadership of Leonor Manzanares animates the entire group together with those who untiringly support the ministry. The Guadalupano Food Sales bring in extra much-needed revenue to the parish but most importantly – our community is brought together in fellowship. Let us acknowledge the generosity of Grupo Guadalupano as they continue to be witnesses of the mission of Jesus at St. Jerome Parish. Oliva Muñoz – Oliva Muñoz is a woman of silence, simplicity and dedication to her ministry as a volunteer at our parish Gift Shop every Sunday. She always works behind the scenes, almost unnoticeable by many. She continues to share her many gifts and talents to the mission of Jesus at St. Jerome by offering our parishioners a warm and hospitable welcome as they come and visit our neatly adorned parish Gift Shop. Her regular participation in our liturgies exemplifies Oliva's commitment to her calling as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

This is the time when we must file our income taxes for the year 2019. To help the parish save money, we will only send tax contribution statements to those who request it. Statements will be made available by January 31st. Parishioners have the option to receive their statements by mail or to pick them up at the parish office. If you need a statement with your contributions for 2019, please complete the request form below, or complete one of the blank forms at the back of church, and drop it in the collection basket on Sunday.
