TIME FOR GOD
I will be away on retreat this week, joining a number of other diocesan priests for a preached retreat offered by
certain priests of Opus Dei, a remarkable community of lay and ordained members of the Church. I am looking forward
to it very much. Retreats are wonderful times of spiritual refreshment, reordering of priorities, renewed perspective on
the world and life, and a loving kick in the seat from the Lord (at least mine generally turn out to be so!).
Yet, it always proves difficult to make a retreat. It feels like going to exercise – one always feels a sense of satisfac-
tion afterward, but actually getting there is a challenge. I have a leg up on most, in the sense that I (along with all
priests and religious) am required by Canon Law to make a five-day spiritual retreat every year – so there is an external
motivation to it into the calendar. Still, knowing that emails, calls, and work pile up when I’m away, foreseeing the hard
work and generosity that are demanded if a spiritual retreat is going to be fruitful, feeling the anxiety to which the pro-
spect of five days filled with nothing but silent prayer can give rise, and wishing that I could take the time off to hike
through some beautiful mountain range somewhere all stack up against me.
I hope these musings don’t sound unappreciative or disconnected from reality – indeed, I recognize the rare gift
that the sheer opportunity to make a retreat is. I bring it up, rather, because it is a larger example of an experience that
is common to every person who has tried to have a disciplined, stable life of prayer. If you have tried to grow in rela-
tionship with God in your life, you know what I am talking about.
Having a committed life of prayer always proves difficult. Making time for prayer is an immense challenge. Know-
ing that, in order to experience the consolation of a prayer life, it is necessary to pass through periods of dryness, emp-
tiness, and boredom is a challenge. Overcoming the anxiety that comes when we consider spending time in silence
with God and not having absolute control over what we experience is a challenge. Trying not to get frustrated when we
go to pray and are just distracted, our minds refusing to stop – like an engine revving in neutral – is a challenge. Sacri-
ficing other activities on which we could spend our time is a challenge. God always invites us to that deeper relation-
ship – but how great are the obstacles!
And, yet, it is worth the struggle. Prayer transforms people (I have seen it). God never spurns or ignores our gen-
erosity. When we give the Lord our time and attention, it never goes to waste. That generosity looks different for
different people – for a priest, an hour of prayer each day and a five-day retreat each year might be minimums that God
expects; but for a mother or father of a family, generosity might be 15 minutes in the morning before little feet drop
out of bed. Regardless of your state in life, be generous with the Lord; work on the discipline of prayer; make time for
God. It is always worth it.

MISA PARA UN SER QUERIDO
The New Year is full of resolutions – resolutions for a
healthier body, for a cleaner environment, for a better
marriage. Why not make a resolution that will do all
three? Natural Family Planning is free of unwanted side
effects, it’s the “green” thing to do, and is shown to im-
prove your marriage. All of this and it’s just as effective
as artificial birth control at postponing pregnancy! So
why not try Natural Family Planning? It works! Classes
are beginning soon in your area. For more information or
to register, contact Susan or Louis Hoefer at shoefer@dol-
in.org or 765-421-1998.
The Lafayette Deanery Middle School retreat is April 6-7 at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immacu-
late Conception in Lafayette. Cost is $30 which in-cludes a t-shirt. Make checks payable to St. Law-
rence. All 6-8th graders are invited. To register, go to www.saintlawrencechurch.net, click the Formation
tab, then click Middle School Youth Ministry. Registra-tion deadline is March 20. Contact Ryan Hillman at 765-423-2396 or the website for more information.
If Carroll County has a road watch, CCD classes will be can-
celled. Cancellations will be called into WLFI-18, Shine 99,
K105 and 100.5 radio stations, as well as the parish web-
site www.stjosephdelphi.org. If classes are not cancelled
and you are unable to attend, you need to contact your
teacher or [email protected] to excuse your
child. Masses are never cancelled.
The Knights of Columbus have rescheduled their
breakfast to this Sunday from 8:30am until about
10:00am. We will be donating 50% of net proceeds
to Birthright here in Delphi. Come on out and have
some excellent biscuits and sausage gravy, pan-
cakes, scrambled eggs, and sausage links & patties.
We will also have whole hog sausage available for
