In the Cross of Christ I Glory” LBW # 104

1) In the cross of Christ I glory,

tow'ring o'er the wrecks of time.

All the light of sacred story

gathers round its head sublime.

2) When the woes of life o'ertake me,

hopes deceive, and fears annoy,

Never shall the cross forsake me;

lo, it glows with peace and joy.

4) Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,

by the cross are sanctified;

peace is there that knows no measure,

joys that through all time abide.

The sign of the cross may be made in remembrance of your Baptism.

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

P Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from

whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the

inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily

magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

truth. But if we confess our sins to him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our

sins and cleanse us from all wickedness. (1 John 1: 8-9, NLT)

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

P Most Merciful God,

We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We

have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done

and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole

heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your

Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so

that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your

holy name. Amen.

Pastor announces forgiveness in Christ Jesus

C Amen.

“I’ve Got Peace Like a River”

I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace like a river in my soul;

I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace like a river in my soul.

I’ve got love like an ocean, I’ve got love like an ocean, I’ve got love like an ocean in my soul.

I’ve got love like an ocean, I’ve got love like an ocean, I’ve got love like an ocean in my soul. (Back to 1st verse)

And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ. And I, too, will share in His glory when He is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: 2 Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. 3 Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. 4 And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor. 5 In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (Proverbs 3:34)

6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time He will lift you up in honor. 7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you. 8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are. 10 In His kindness God called you to share in His eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, He will restore, support, and strengthen you, and He will place you on a firm foundation. 11 All power to Him forever! Amen.

This week has been sponsored to the glory of God by Albert and Irene Menn in thankfulness for their many blessings and in celebration of their 53rd wedding anniversary.

Have been given to the glory of God Albert and Irene Menn in special recognition of

fathers everywhere. If your dad is still living, take a moment to thank him for all he has done for you, and if he isn’t, thank God for the father you had.

spray and paper towels. All counter tops and other surfaces used must be wiped

down as well.

COVID GUIDELINES:

hand sanitizer stations around the building are encouraged. You are asked to follow

Social Distancing guidelines to the best of your ability. (The above sanitation requests

applies here especially as well.)

Our committees (Ministry Teams) will meet again on July 7! Since this is our first post-COVID-19 meeting, we have lots to work on! Pastor Jim and Diana will provide supper for all this evening. Committee meetings will start at 6:30.

Sermon Notes – Following Jesus in troubling times - 1 Peter 5 10 In His kindness God called you to share in His eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus.

So after you have suffered a little while, He will restore, support, and strengthen you, and He will place you on a firm foundation.

11 All power to Him forever! Amen.

Big idea: At times it can be difficult to follow Jesus in a broken world, but God will give

us strength, power and support that we can remain faithful to Him!

1. Peter is writing to people like us living in times like we live!

The temptation to walk away from Jesus. The temptation to follow after the

ways of the world.

2. Peter’s teaching: commands for us to live by and the truth about God!

Commands:

For Pastors and leaders: “Care for the flock that God has entrusted to

you”

For all: “accept the authority of the elders”

“dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another”

If you are interested is visiting the Holy Land, Faith is sponsoring a trip to Israel in November of 2021. Details for this trip are available on our website: www.faithseguin.org. See the Israel Trip tab, or contact Pastor Jim.

Page 8: Third Sunday after Pentecost June 21, 2020...2020/06/21  · P If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the Third Sunday after Pentecost June 21,

“humble yourselves under the mighty power of God”

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil”

“Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith”

What we need to remember about God:

“And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of

never-ending glory and honor.”

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.”

“God called you to share in His eternal glory by means of Christ

Jesus”

“He will restore, support, and strengthen you, and He will place you

on a firm foundation”

“All power to Him forever! Amen.”

3. How do we do this?

We are people who believe, accept, treasure and share the Word of

the Lord!

We are people who remember the faithfulness of God.

Build yourself an Ebenezer! 1 Samuel 7: 12 “Samuel then took a large

stone and placed it between the towns of Mizpah and Jeshanah. He

named it Ebenezer (which means “the stone of help”), for he said,

“Up to this point the LORD has helped us!”

My God is everything Peter says He is and I will trust Him!
