  • Techie Questions from Members Do you have any specific questions about technology or something specific you would like to see covered in this column? Send your suggestions, questions, and comments to the club at [email protected]. We will try to address them in future issues.

This month I have nothing specific to cover but here are some random tidbits that I have picked up:

Someone actually read the Techie Corner in the March newsletter and sent me a comment. He indicated that he has been using RoboForm for years and that the free version of that software does have all the features of LastPass and Dashlane. I was just reporting what I had read in several different reviews of the products. Thanks for that input.

For you iPhone users there is an interesting result when you ask Siri about certain numbers. It turns out that 108 is the emergency services number in India. Siri knows that so if you ask about 108 it will dial 911. Not a good thing to do if you are not in an emergency situation. There are also several other numbers that will do the same thing – 911, 000, 110 and 111 so don’t ask Siri about them unless you want to have it call 911.

I have seen several warnings about some tax-themed phishing and malware scams that are going around. You especially need to watch out for emails requesting last-minute deposit changes for refunds or account updates. Another one involves scam emails that claim to be from their tax software provider or others asking taxpayers to update online accounts. If you receive any suspicious emails purporting to be from a tax software provider or from the IRS you should forward them to [email protected]. If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here is what you should do:

If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with a payment issue.

If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the Treas-ury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484 or at www.tigta.gov.

You can file a complaint using the FTC Complaint Assistant (https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/Information?OrgCode=IRS#crnt&panel1-1) : choose “Other” and then “Impostor Scams.” If the complaint involves someone impersonating the IRS, include the words “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.

  • Mozart and Me by Dean Nerdahl

Sunday, March 19th, 20 retirees and guests enjoyed the wonderful music of Mozart at the Ames Center Black Box The-

ater. It was a sold-out performance by the Dakota Valley Symphony directed by Stephen J. Ramsey.

The orchestra started out with Symphony No. 5 which was written by Mozart at age 9. That’s impossible!

Next was Violin Concerto No. 3 written at age 19, featuring Angela Waterman-Hanson as the violin soloist who was amazing! She looked very young, but judging by her list of credentials you’d think she’d have to be a very old person, but she wasn’t. (PhD from U of M, professor at Bethel, MN Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and solo perfor-

    mances all over the country).

After intermission we heard Clarinet Concerto in A featuring Rachel Light-Diede as the clarinet soloist who was also amazing. Rachel also had a long list of credentials (teaches band, choir and piano at North Oaks Academy and has

performed all over the country). This was my favorite performance of the afternoon.

This was a very good way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

That’ll Be The Day at the Sheldon Theater in Red Wing

    By Dave Moen

Friday, March 17th (St Patrick’s Day) was a great day even if you weren’t Irish. 50 Retirees and guests ar-

rived at the St James Hotel in Red Wing for a relaxing lunch in a private dining room. After lunch we ei-

ther walked or rode the bus to the Sheldon Theater for a performance of many great songs by Roy Orbi-

son, Linda Ronstadt, Gene Pitney and others.

Many people don’t realize that Roy Orbison also wrote many songs for other well known performers.

There were 4 band members and the male singer also accompanied them on several songs playing the gui-tar. There were 2 female singers and many of us recognized Colleen Raye who has entertained Retirees at

2 of our spring/fall lunches, most recently as Patsy Kline. Gene Pitney songs included 24 Hours from Tulsa, Lib-erty Valance, He’s a Rebel, Only Love Can Break a Heart, Hello Mary Lou and others. Linda Ronstadt songs included Des-perado, Mr. Sandman, It’s So Easy, That’ll Be the Day and others. Roy Orbison songs included Only The Lonely, Blue Bay-ou, Sweet Dream Baby, Pretty Woman and others.

The Sheldon Theater, built in 1904 and renovated in 1936, was named after a successful business man and

City Council member, who left an $83,000 bequest for the theater. Unfortunately, the 1936 renovation to

a movie theater stripped the building of its arches, delicate plaster sculptures, decorative painting and oth-

er rich details. The 466 seat theater was closed in the 1970’s, reopened in 1986, and claims to be the old-

est operating theater in MN. There were eight 56 passenger buses which accounted for about 400 of the

466 people attending the sold out performance.

  • WIFE BEGINS AT FORTY

    By Linda Hauck

Wife Begins at Forty is enjoyable enough, but feels slightly like a faded sitcom from the 80’s.

Linda Harper, who has always been easy-going and enjoying the good life, now confides to her neigh-bor and best friend, Betty, that she has only three years before she will be 40! Already she is feeling that the better side of life is passing her by. Linda’s husband, George, has been a good father to her son, a great family breadwinner, but he is boring with a capital ‘B.’

Their 17 year marriage has gone stale, but George doesn't seem to be aware of it. When confronted with the problem, he gets a vasectomy, which solves nothing, so he moves out. Trying for an amicable divorce, they agree to use one lawyer and hire their closest friend. When this backfires, George at-tempts reconciliation by trying to seduce Linda on their living room couch. George botches the seduc-tion due to the pressure of trying to perform well and the unexpected return of their son from a date. It does, however, result in their realizing they still care about each other and that marriages need work-ing at, need to be renewed and renegotiated from time to time, and that theirs is certainly worth a sec-ond chance.

The Daytrippers Theater in the Eagles Club provided a very nice buffet luncheon and was very accom-

modating for our group of 46.

    The King and I

    By Chuck Woldum

This famous Broadway musical was seen and heard by 75 Club mem-

bers and guests at the Orpheum Theater on March 4th. This is the

story of the British aristocratic lady who went to Siam to educate the

king and his many children, and to tutor the King on ways he should

demonstrate tact and diplomacy in place of his barbaric style. Many

stories within the story are enhanced by the beautiful words and music

    of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Daniel has thrilled thousands for years. His great Irish voice and the songs he sings bring joy

and tears to audiences. Daniel has been one of Branson's BIG stars for years. If you heard

    are missing.

  • LAWS

Law of Mechanical Repair After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will begin to itch and you’ll have to pee. Law of Gravity Any tool, nut, bolt, screw when dropped will roll to the least accessible place in the universe. Law of Probability The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act. Law of Random Numbers If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal - and someone always answers. Variation Law If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will always move faster than the one you are in now….works every time. Law of the Bath When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone rings. Law of Close Encounters The probability of meeting someone you know INCREASES dramatically when you are with someone you don’t want to be seen with. Law of the Result When you try to prove to someone that a machine won’t work, IT WILL. Law of Biomechanics The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach. Law of the Theater & Hockey Arena At any event, the people whose seats are furthest from the aisle, always arrive last. They are the ones who will leave their seats several times to go for food, beer or the toilet and who leave early before the end of the performance or game is over. The folks in the aisle seats come early, never move once, have long gangly legs or big bellies and stay to the bitter end of the performance. The aisle people also are very surly folk. Murphy’s Law of Lockers If there are only two people in a locker room, they will have adjacent lockers. Law of Physical Surfaces The chances of an open-faced jelly sandwich landing face down on a floor, are directly corre-lated to the newness and cost of the carpet or rug. Law of Logical Argument Anything is possible IF you don’t know what you are talking about. Brown’s Law of Physical Appearance If the clothes fit, they’re ugly. Oliver’s Law of Public Speaking A CLOSED MOUTH GATHERS NO FEET! Wilson’s Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy As soon as you find a product that you really like, they will stop making it OR the store will stop selling it. Doctors’ Law If you don’t feel well, make an appointment to go to the doctor; by the time you get there you’ll feel bet-ter. But don’t make an appointment, and you’ll stay sick.
